>>If price was no object what deck would you be playing?
A heavily refined version of my Scion of the Ur-Dragon deck with a manabase consisting entirely of original dual lands, every applicable "add one mana of any color to your mana pool" land that didn't have some idiotic restriction a la Rupture Spire or Transguild Promenade.

Also every card that had an available foil would be foil. I'm not so much looking for competitiveness there as I am appearance.

Same mana/foil treatment for my Sliver Overlord deck.

>What was your most epic win?
It took a bit of a god hand and some lucky draws, but I managed a turn five Primal Surge with a Sliver Overlord deck. It's 100 permanents, so I was able to play every card in the deck, and the permanents DO include an infinite creature engine, and which lead to infinite infinitely huge slivers, all of which were packing a variety of abilities including haste.

In short; by turn five in a five-way game I managed to kill the entire table.

>What was your most recent mistake which lost you a game?
Playing Melek against a guy using Niv-Mizzet. I had a chance to cast Anger of the Gods off the top of my library and take out his general. Unfortunately it would've taken out Melek as well and I wanted to keep him around for shenanigans.

The following turn he drew Curiosity, slapped it on his general, and won.

>What is the most useless, non-vanilla, non-Haakon , Legendary Creature?
If we're going by General worthy-ness, given your mention of Haakon, then Phage the Untouchable. In monoblack, your only safe way to get her out is to have either a Platinum Angel or a Torpor Orb on the battlefield. If we're going with non-general, I'd have to say Krosan Groundshaker. I remember loving that card when it came out, but...it's just so useless now.

>> No.38009841

>>If price was no object what deck would you be playing?
A real one
>spending thousands of dollars on cardboard when cockatrice is just as good

>>What was your most epic win?
I've been playing with doomsday lately. Everytime I win with Doomsday feels epic.

>>What was your most recent mistake which lost you a game?
Most recent was probably dicking around in a game instead of just going for the throat.

>>What is the most useless, non-vanilla, non-Haakon , Legendary Creature?

Chorus of the Conclave. Their effect would be pretty cool, if only you didn't have to spend all your mana casting her.

Their effect turns Wild Pair into a search for any creature in your deck card.

Come on anon. Phage is great.

Nether Void
Thrull Wizard
Endless Whispers+Abyssal Persecutor (or Avarice Totem. Whispers should be in your deck anyways because it lets you assassinate people with phage.

>> No.38009922

>Krosan Groundshaker
Not a Legendary creature.

Also that turn 5 Primal Surge sounds pretty crazy. I take it that you didn't have a control player around when that happened?

As for Phage, I have to disagree. You have another effect, Sundial of the Infinte. And you're playing mono-black and have basically infinite tutors.

You playing Dralnu Doomsday?

>> No.38010064

No, Jeleva.

>If price was no object what deck would you be playing?
I'd love to be able to put together a Child of Alara Lands.dec, that deck is fun but extremely expensive.
>What was your most epic win?
I think that would have to go to when I was playing Marton Stromgald.

Chaos Warping into a Blightsteel Collosus, swinging and killing the hug player when there was a white deck at the table.

Proceeded to Return to Dust my Blightsteel and then beat me down with weenies.

>> No.38013223

From a quick gatherer search I found out that there are 7708 creatures printed in Magic's History.

Out of these a combined 185 creatures have a combination of Shroud, Hexproof, or Indestructible. Lets add 15 on to that for various effects which can bounce a creature to hand or some other way to prevent it from dying to removal.

So 200 creatures out of 7708. That is literally 2.6% of the creatures in all of magic which won't "Die to removal." Which is also a falsehood considering that sweepers are also removal, which will kill the shroud/hexproof creatures.

So we have two options
>we add an addendum to that meme which will transform it into "Dies to Spot Removal." In which case we reached out 2.6%
>we only count indestructible creatures, of which 56 have been printed to this day. Working the numbers that means only 0.7% of creatures don't "die to removal"

Basically what I'm getting at is that you're a moron and should stop spouting meme garbage all over the place, especially when it doesn't have the slightest bit of relevance.

Lots of creatures with the "whenever this deals combat damage to a player/opponent" phrase on it. Fill in with some counter spell and board wipes as needed. If you decide to use Silumgar, Xenograft and Conspiricy are great, turning a few creatures into a limited boardwipe.

Alternatively, you could go fairy tribal. Lots of people use Oona, who IS excellent, but tend to overlook Vela because she's not a fairy, when she simply provides a different focus.

Remember to put a Trinket Mage, Tezzeret, and Dizzy Spell in there. Sometimes you just NEED a Sensei's.

>> No.38015551

I've got a Trinket Mage on hand, actually. I think if I'm going to run him it might be worth expanding my package of targets. Right now it's just Sol Ring, Divining Top, Darksteel Citadel and possibly Tormod's Crypt - I actually can't recall off the top of my head if it's in there right now. It tends to bounce in and out depending on how recently I got hosed by a graveyard deck.

I should definitely get my hands on a Tezzeret - That deck is somehow where all my relevant Planeswalkers end up, I think I'm running five in there at the moment.

>> No.38015581

My personal package is Sol Ring, Sensei's, Seat of the Synod, and Pithing Needle. Pithing Needle can blow entire decks out of the water so easily. Daretti gets raped by the thing.

>> No.38015679

I've got two Planeswalker commanders I'm running into on a fairly regular basis - Daretti and Teferi. I've seen how easily Teferi can be shut down by it, but haven't had a chance to see Pithing Needle resolve against Daretti.

It'll be tough finding cuts to make. I might sort out a decklist and see if I can't get some advice from a fresher set of eyes.

>> No.38015727

Well here's the main list I run to pretty good effect at my LGS. First it was Melek, then it was Niv Mizzet, now it's Nin because she's an insane way of spending mana efficiently since you can just make her kill herself for cards. >> No.38016110

No that's super cool looking.

The only quibble I might have is that the whole image could be shifted up a little - there's a fairly big gap of space between the title and his head.

I have a personal interest in this as well as Brago is a central piece in one of my decks.

The great limitation, of course, is finding art that fits. Maybe it's because I'm a big stickler for the color composition of the art fitting the mana colors of the card, but it isn't always easy, especially for something more specific like Brago.

Ive been playing and loving talrand, but part of me wants to dip into some basic combos, like Azami and Mind over Matter. Do I just do talrand with polymorph spells?

>> No.38017877

Yeah, the legendary bit was a brainfart.

And no, no real control players at the table. There was a guy running Maelstrom Wanderer as his general, but he was tapped out from one of his mana tutoring spells.

First off, any of the Commander 2014 Lieutenants would instantly be used because if they are your commander, then they boost themselves. Also, any of the M11-M12 Titans. Beyond that, my picks for I could see being used/would use:
White - Puresteel Paladin, Galepowder Mage, Serra Ascendant
Blue - Snapcaster Mage, Ætherling, Stormtide Leviathan, True-Name Nemesis
Black - Abhorrent Overlord, Crypt Ghast, Nirkana Revanent, Stronghold Overseer, Hand of the Praetors
Red - Butcher Orgg, Hunted Dragon, Thundermaw Hellkite
Green - Priest of Titania, Rhox/Tornado Elemental/Thorn Elemental (any of the giant "deal its damage as though it weren't blocked creatures"), Plated Slagwurm
Multi - Chromanticore, Torrent Elemental, Soulfire Grand Master, Brutal Hordechief, Defiler of Souls, Divinity of Pride
Colorless - Mycosynth Golem

Actually, if any creature could be your commander, not just legendary, Serra Ascendant would suddenly find itself the most-played in mono-white for maybe a week, and then promptly be the first card named on the newly reinstated "banned as a commander but legal as one of your 99" list.

>> No.38017914

You're probably getting so few answers because it's a tough nut to answer. Blue is just one of the most expensive colors in EDH and many of the monoblue generals only build effectively in a manner the requires some amount of expensive cards.

If you want budget, monored is probably much more on target.

Contamination is pretty damn nasty for Gisa since you'll have a pretty consistent flow of creatures to sacrifice. Same goes for Smokestack. Plus they all give outlets for Grave Pact, Dictate of Erebos, Blood Artist, etc.

I don't think you need Twisted Abomination. He's not all that great on his own and Swampcycling doesn't seem too necessary. You have a solid landbase already plus Expedition Map, Wayfarer's Bauble, and plenty of rocks.

Urborg makes Cabal Coffers huge and you can combine with Filth for a nasty finisher.

I might also suggest Endless Ranks of the Dead with her. They work together nicely.

Erebos is, in my opinion, a little better than Greed. Greed is cheaper but the "can't gain life" part on Erebos (plus 5/7) is pretty solid.

No Gravecrawler? The card's disgusting with Gisa. With Thornbite Staff it's essentially "BB: Put two 2/2 zombies on the field."

I don't actually run top in my deck, but it's definitely worth considering in near every deck. And blighsteel just isn't worth considering at all in most.

>> No.38025825

But a top gets you to draw a Blightsteel.

Top is just good because it helps dig for cards in any color for very little investment.

It's like paying for a mana base. You can make a 5-color manabase for nothing but your deck will be wildly inconsistent. If you spend the money on it though it turns a slow, clunky 5-color deck into a fast, efficient, and consistent deck.

I can stack my deck full of some of the best wincons but it doesn't mean shit if I don't have the power to draw and play them.

Blightsteel means fuck all if you can't cast it. Top allows you to fill your hand and control your draws which is important for ramp in non-green. Also, it can dodge removal.

>> No.38026190

I only have a single Erebos, which is why I have Greed instead because my other is being used. If I get another one, I'll more than likely replace Greed.

Contamination is a good idea, though. I like that. I've thought about going a Stax route, but I don't know how effective it would be in practice. If I have enough Zombies to not care, I could probably just swing out and put someone down. However, if I'm low on zombies, I'm not exactly making strong board presence and am instead remaining neutral. I guess the argument there is my board isn't getting smaller and my opponent's board should.

I liked abomination because if I get it early, it's a swamp, and if I get it later, it's 5 zombies, 7 with a war chief, and I can keep recycling it with Grotto/Reclamation. However, I supposed it's cutable. On that topic, what's a good amount of mana ramp/fixing to have? My meta is basically Hurr hurr ramp ramp ramp ramp C-C-C-COMBO! In varying styles hats just sort of how I learned to play and assumed that's just how it was played. Now I know that's not the case, but I have no idea how to make a better deck lol.

Anyway, I only have a few Urborgs and like my Erebos, they are used up. It's mono black, so I figured I would be safe without it.

Gravecrawler was in at first, and I cut him because I wasn't sure how much value I was actually getting from him and I wanted to use him for another deck, though he didn't make the cut there. Should I put him back in then? Come to think of it, I guess he goes infinite with another zombie, Blood Artist, and Phyrexian Altar.

I forgot that Endless Ranks of the Undead was a thing. I'll have to snag a copy.

What should come out then?

Then you can have fun with stuff like Goblin Sharpshooter, Deathbringer Thoctar, Triskelion (kill all creatures!), Pestilence Demon and many other fun ping effects.

Although if you lower the cost remember to lower the stats slightly. Remember that it will pretty much always have a +1/+1 counter on it when it takes combat damage the first time so it doesn't necessarily need a higher toughness than power.

3/3 is fine.

I need some real advice.
I have been playing edh with a bunch of dudes who frankly suck at magic. I often make suboptimal plays and hold my good cards in my hand for the entire game. As their decks are super battleship style, but there is a fair amount of boardwipes in the meta, games can grind on for hours.
Like up to four hours.
Now I'm used to a fairly high powered meta, and I moved due to work, and we had a few games that went for a couple of hours. These games were exceptions to the rule and they were tight and exciting. Every turn of these games had gamechanging plays, even if that play was to leave seven blue sources untapped. But most of the games were less than an hour, with strong plays requiring strong responses, and quick and interactive play resulting in some player getting a combo engine going or the card or mana advantage to win.
However, in this new meta, I find myself winning an unacceptable number of times. I'd like an out. I like an option where I can go 'lol i win' and let them fight it out amongst themselves.
I want a combo win with Mind Over Matter/Temple Bell, which ends in sculpted hands for the other players, and full libraries.

So far I've found Diminishing Returns, Lich's Mirror, Myr Mindservant, Mnemonic Nexus and Quest for Ancient Secrets all do things that are close to what I want to do. So I come to you for help.
Help me find up to four cards in this deck that I can take out for an everybody-has-seven-perfect-cards after I win package.

Hey /tg/, I ordered the C14 Elf deck and while browsing for some cards to tune it a bit, I encountered a bunch of cards that made me think.
Could I make an infinite mana combo by enchanting a Forest with Elvish Guidance, tapping it for 2+ mana, untapping it and a Wirewood Lodge with Argothian Elder, then using the Wirewood Lodge to untap the Argothian Elder, then tapping the enchanted forest for 2+ mana again and using the Wirewood Lodge to untap the Argothian Elder, et cetera? Sure, having all of these on the field and using them uninterrupted is some magical Christmas land kind of shit, but it's not like those cards are bad on their own either, right?
Or have I missed something?

I don't see why it wouldn't, personally.

>> No.38059637

Those cards are mandatory in an elf deck and yes they go infinite.

>> No.38059683

It works just fine (you just specifically have to target Argothian Elder with the Lodge and then tap the Elder in response), and with some creature and land tutors, which is what green is all about, there's no reason it has to be magical christmas land shit.

>> No.38059792

Sweet. I'm kinda new to MTG and EDH, so finding this out just now made me really happy. Especially seeing how cheap those cards are! And with a few more elves, it should work with Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx as well. And I was almost about to say "well but all those cards only tutor basic lands", but then I thought to search for rules text that says 'a land card' and boom, found stuff to put the Lodge and Nykthos into play! Nice!
Although I do love the randomness of EDH and don't want to put in too many tutors and make every game the same. But surely a handful can't hurt.

Worked some more on my Ruric Thar deck. Any feedback on it is appreciated. What I was trying to go for with this deck is to run a bunch of cards and effects that speed up the game or encourage/force players to be more aggressive and proactive.

Trying my best to not go over 12 noncreature spells but I'd be open to bumping that number up to 14 if it helps the deck overall.

I am not trying to go tryhard, but it would still nice for this deck to hold it's own against a higher power level and actually work out.

i'm still trying to figure out exactly what it means by "no longer affect that permanent once it’s phased in" because it seems more applicable to something like Merieke, who won't be able to destroy the creature if Merieke becomes untapped while the creature is phased out
i think 702.25b may be the relevant one though
>If a permanent phases out, its status changes to “phased out.” Except for rules and effects that specifically mention phased-out permanents, a phased-out permanent is treated as though it does not exist. It can’t affect or be affected by anything else in the game.

>> No.38067476

Actually, I just looked into it some more and you're correct, but not for the reason you think.

The reason it doesn't work is that Yasova sets up a continuous effect, which ends no matter if the creature is phased or no. If it had been a separate trigger, like on Sedris, it would have worked, but stealing effects are almost never worded like that.

>> No.38067899

The "until end of turn" effect of Yasova expires while the permanent is phased out. Because of that it phases in at it's controller's untap step under that player's control if I understand correctly.

With merieki, if you untap her while a permament is phased out, the creature won't be destroyed, but it will go back to it's owner's control.

>> No.38068249

>With merieki, if you untap her while a permament is phased out, the creature won't be destroyed, but it will go back to it's owner's control.
you've somehow combined Rubinia and Merieke
Merieke's duration is "as long as you control Merieke Ri Berit"
its other condition is that the creature will be destroyed if Merieke leaves the battlefield or becomes untapped
i was saying i'm not sure what happens to the temporary control effect if the creature phases out, because i'm not familiar with phasing
i'm looking back at the "continuous effects with a duration" part and i somehow came to the conclusion that it would phase in on your turn and go back to its previous controller? since it's phased out under your control, but you no longer have an effect that says you control it?
I'd prefer to ask GA

>> No.38068520

Oh, with phasing and meriki then, you still control the creature, because the control effect didn't expire while phased. It just doesn't get destroyed, just like if you had used Meriki on a Blightsteel.

So it phases in on your turn.

due to precedent not being found, i have come to a conclusion
the creature returns to its owners control while still phased out, per the example of 702.25b
>If a permanent phases out, its status changes to “phased out.” Except for rules and effects that specifically mention phased-out permanents, a phased-out permanent is treated as though it does not exist. It can’t affect or be affected by anything else in the game.
>Example: You control three creatures, one of which is phased out. You cast a spell that says “Draw a card for each creature you control.” You draw two cards.
>Example: You control a phased-out creature. You cast a spell that says “Destroy all creatures.” The phased-out creature is not destroyed.

control of the creature exists, therefore control of the creature can change

>> No.38070390

The creature belongs to its owner. A continuous effect is causing it to be controlled by a different player. Continuous effects no longer apply to phased out shit. The way I'd imagine it works is that since Yasova's control changing effect is no longer being applied, it goes back to its owner's control.

>> No.38070461

>Continuous effects no longer apply to phased out shit.
Yes they do. Everything works just fine. Phasing doesn't even actually interact with continuous effects.

>> No.38070657

yes, the only question i had left was how a continuous control-changing effect with a duration interacted with phasing
upon closer examination of the phrasing of phasing :D the creature is still -on- the battlefield, just "phased out" and invisible to effects that would do things to it like "destroy all creatures" or "draw a card for each creature you control"
>>Continuous effects no longer apply to phased out shit.
>Yes they do. Everything works just fine. Phasing doesn't even actually interact with continuous effects.
well it kind of does
>702.25e Continuous effects that affect a phased-out permanent may expire while that permanent is phased out. If so, they will no longer affect that permanent once it’s phased in. In particular, effects with “for as long as” durations that track that permanent (see rule 611.2b) end when that permanent phases out because they can no longer see it.
