It's really quite strange to me that there was such a perception during the 6th gen of the Gamecube being a "kiddy console" that supposedly had nothing to offer mature gamers.

The GCN was the last time Nintendo actually tried to target an older audience by publishing all these games that were outside their usual scope like Eternal Darkness and Geist. Or, most famously, Metroid Prime, which was marketed as Nintendo's answer to Halo back when it first came out.

The Cube being on-par with the PS2 and Xbox in terms of graphical capabilities also of course meant it was the last Nintendo console that got most third party multiplat games. Sure they might not have had GTA but they had the likes of Splinter Cell, True Crime, Soul Calibur, Spiderman, Need for Speed, Call of Duty, all the kinds of games that teen and adult gamers would have been interested in. And in many cases the GCN versions of these games were superior to PS2.

It's odd that the Switch has had way more success at appealing to adult demographics despite all of Nintendo's games for it being full-on Disney-style kiddy shit, but the Gamecube which actually went out of its way to present itself as a grown-up console was derided as a "purple lunchbox for children".

>be me
>hear that I need to play Eternal Darkness because of its mind-blowing sanity effects
>buy Eternal Darkness from someone on eBay
>receive it in the mail
>put the disk into my Gamecube
>game won't start, doesn't even get to the title screen, just black screen, can't play it at all
>email eBay seller and tell him game won't start and is broken
>eBay seller says "Nah, that's just a sanity effect bro"
>mind-blown.jpg
This is the best game i've ever played

Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem is definitely up there somewhere. Must've been groundbreaking upon release.
