Can I assume that shmups aren't barred from this discussion? I mean, they fall under the broader classification of shooters.

I'm an old millennial in my mid 30s. I really have no business still posting on 4chan, but I find it hard to believe that anyone here is really a boomer. Unless you're intellectually and emotionally stunted.

You should check out Shadow Dancer if you haven't already.

No one ever talks about Gradius. Can we talk about Gradius? I have damn near all of them, except Gradius III and IV for PS2. My console stopped reading blue-backed discs, so I have no way to play it. I tried ripping it and converting it to DVD to load with ESR, but apparently ESR isn't compatible with the game. Neither is OPL via USB. Oh, well.

/vg/ is pure cancer with tripfags and waifu posting. /vr/ is a much slower board, and that's a good thing. There's maybe a handful of active posters here, and most of us are dedicated hobbyists instead of drive-by crossboarders.

Technically impressive, but utterly dull to play. This is just another "hidden gem" that people go and get autistic about because it's different. In retrospect, it just sucks.

One of the reasons I got into shoot-'em-ups in the first place was for the atmospheric quality of series like Gradius. It was really aesthetic flying through extraterrestrial caverns, colossal alien lifeforms and fortress ships. Recca doesn't have that quality to me. It's just wave after wave of enemies on generic backdrops. I don't even recall there being any environmental obstacles in the game.

Most any shoot-'em-up would qualify. I'm a sucker for Gauntlet as well.

Can we get a thread about classic shmups like Gradius, Darius, Star Soldier, Fantasy Zone, Aleste, etc. Most of the time I see discussions about shoot 'em ups, it's usually bullet hells and Touhou that steal the entire focus of the thread. It would be nice to talk about something like Gradius for a change. Horizontal shooters seem to get the least appreciation anymore.
