I did that with Contras and Ninja Gaiden on the NES (as well as many others) and now I'm untouchable.

another technique I employed as a kid was to get really good at just the first few levels and then quit, then make sure I master those levels fully before going onward, making me a master of the game as I was playing it.

That sound way too tedious to be fun. Save state abuse is a sad affliction.

>Solar Jetman, Wonder Boy in Monster Land
Good picks. Solar Jetman looks interesting and I am aware that it's hard as cafeteria chicken, though.
>getting revenge on as an adult
kek a good way to put it. As for TMNT, meh the arcade version was what I was all about back then...and the cartoon.

Solar Jetman. It's Asteroids with a little more meat on its bones. Grand old time.

Solar Jetman, NES.

>2D space physics simulator
>every level has different gravity
>you can turn 360 degrees, fly in any direction
>game involves dragging stuff back to your mothership with tractor beam
>if you get blown up, you fly around as little jetpack guy and can fly back to mothership to get replacement ship
>can find upgrades like shields, better boosters, weapons, etc
>long fucking game, and passwords don't save ANYTHING except current level, so don't bother trying to continue another time
>last level/final boss is total pointless bullshit that has no reason to exist other than Rare not knowing what the fuck to do

It's fun, but either you'll be having a blast by the end of level 2, or you'll never want to touch it ever again.

I'm also tempted to say Tetris for the GB.

I'm surprised that no one has posted Solar Jetman yet.

The physics based gameplay is a blast once you get used to it, and the visuals are pretty nice to boot.

The one thing I have against it is the final level, which was a huge let down.

Amongst others, the others being any NES game I had except Mario bros 3 and when i could get a loan of Super Mario and Duck Hunt. My bundle came with Dr Mario and it was such a fucking disappointment though I never let on. I also got Shadowgate with it and I'd never played a point and click before and couldn't get past the first screen until I gave it to my uncle who figured it out.

First time I post here, please forgive my noobness.

I just remembered a game I played about 20 years ago, but I can't remember the name. :(

It was on the PC, I'm relatively sure. Sci-Fi. You commanded a spaceship. Your crew was just brain patterns in the computer, so you could alter them. You flew around from planet to planet and sent out probes to scan the world. If there were resources, you could send factories down to get them.
I don't remember if there even was a combat mechanism in it.

Anybody got any clue what game that might have been?

Solar Jetman because it's awesome. :D

I adored this game when I was a kid and still revisit it from time to time.

FF7 also blew me away (at the time). Pokemon Gold also ate a lot of my time as a teen.
