Why weren't 1st person view JRPGs more popular on consoles? I think they look very cool. I only know of Phantasy Star 1 and SMT, and Phantasy Star immediately abandoned 1st person dungeons after 1. I think I saw some games like this on Japanese computers, but that's about it. Did Dragon Quest forever kill the 1st person view?

just do a little grinding around some safe spots where you can recover you HP. when things get hard you just do a little leveling up.
originally i've played this on the console, but on the emulator I did the XP farming with increased speed.

>Remember also that this is a Super Famicom title from the early 90's and it feels like a massive story and setting with massive buildings.
And compare it to Megami Tensei and Phantasy Star a few years earlier and the Wizardry remakes on the same console too

A game like Phantasy Star would look amazing with this engine. Of course you're not going to run Quake 3 with this engine. Go be a zoomer somewhere else.

A friend of mine worked at a Roppongi strip joint Naka visited often, and I just found out the other day that while fetching Naka's coat he accidentally dropped it, and Naka wasn't pleased. He was kind of a dick apparently. Still, he did the Phantasy Star dungeon programming, so he's alright in my book.

He programmed the Phantasy Star scrolling dungeons which were hot shit at the time. But yeah, he's overrated.

if you're mapping correctly you won't lose track of your position if you're traveling upwards or downwards, simply start a new sheet and continue on from the same square as the previous sheet.

It's surprising how well Phantasy Star holds up, especially that soundtrack.

Name a better 1st person dungeon traversal animation.
Protip: you can't.

Eh, maybe and maybe not. You might like 'em, but they're difficult to compare all right. If you like the early Wizardry (1-3,5) and M&M (just 1&2) games then you might see similarities in early DQ and FF. Since you're obviously comfortable with first person dungeoning I'd recommend Phantasy Star (1) as a better introduction to classic JRPGs. It's got plenty of oldschool RPG feel with exploration and open endedness and a hell of a lot better presentation than any RPG on a Nintendo console would for at least 9 years.

> if not then isn't there a romhack that does both?
There is a retranslation based on the Japanese rom which does FM sound by default, yeah. This is the one: http://www.smspower.org/Translations/PhantasyStar-SMS-EN

Up until now this has easily been THE definitive way to play the game. Maybe it has competition now, I don't know. It's still a very good option and it's free. It's still the way I'd go with personally, but that's me innit.

>And on PC it can be hard to play offline.
Torrenting and running both PSU version 1 and AOTU is pretty basic and painless, I do not recall having any trouble getting them running in offline mode when I played a couple of years back. Anybody reporting trouble with them may have gone full retard and tried starting the online modes. As for Clementine, it's a mere curiosity at this point. Let's not accidentally make anybody believe it's actually playable.

Though even bringing up PSO and PSU in a classic Phantasy Star thread seems a bit odd, really.

This was the first ever rpg I played. Absolutely swallowed me up as a kid, I hadn't played anything like it. Plus there was internet of fuckall back then so I feel pretty proud about completing that game all by myself. I wouldn't have that level of commitment or determination for anything in my life now.

Up until recently I still have the dungeon theme as my alarm.

If you're going to count SMT then Phantasy Star 1 counts as well. It's got a great spacey sci-fi with fantasy elements setting.

I honestly don't think there is a single 2D game that matches the PPS dungeon scrolling. Pretty shocking, considering so many other dungeon games run on better hardware.

>he needs maps!
I really don't get this. I don't have a great sense of direction and I can get through the game just fine mapless. Getting lost is half the fun!
