This is what killed my general interest as well. To be a completionist in Pokemon is to slam through a lot of games to eventually catch up to the present, unless Pokemon transfer services are discontinued forever breaking your link to your GBA games. On the flipside, if you only play Gen I and II you have a large but sane-to-finish quest in front of you.
This is part of the reason why I like Shin Megami Tensei a bit more. In addition to being retarded levels of edgy and having a drunken elemental fight instead of rock-paper-scissors, every game is self-contained minus a couple odd ones like Demikids.

I love this chart because it reminds me that you can have all sorts of bugs in your program and still make a successful and memorable product. It makes me less angry at myself for all the code I've fucked up in my career.

And shit like this is thoroughly amusing. Srsly, you put a massive fucking adventure on a cart using all kinds of techniques and of course you'll create some weird conditional bug that sends the player into a nightmare universe. I'd like to see some modern programmers work on a Game Boy and see how their shit turns out.

>games they often describe as pokemon but serious
People only describe it that way when talking to new people unfamiliar with the series, because Pokemon has grown to monopolize the concept of catching monsters and making them fight for you.
After that, the connection is forgotten, which sucks because I kinda like it, and there are some things from Pokemon that I'd like to see in SMT, and some things that people and developers who've only played Pokemon could learn from SMT. Even Demikids doesn't really really fill the gap for me.

sorry, i guess i didn't really read your question too close. they aren't the same, however i do feel that DQ5 is a simplification of SMT's monster negotiation.

i would totally recommend the series to you! but from the looks of this comment, it appears you have already played a few entries. as a fan of both series, i find their differences to be less important than what makes them both appealing (to me).
