>But DBZ barely feels like anime to me
Why?
Also the other game isn't Saint Seiya, it's Magic Knight Rayearth.
Sadly Saint Seiya never got any 16-bit game, only some RPGs on Famicom and GB, which are nice in a way but nothing great.

Same.
Also, when you think about it, DBZ is fucking weird, we take it for granted now, but I remember as a kid not knowing any of the characters and thinking how weird (yet cool) they looked.

Hyper Dimension is one of the best, but Super Butoden 2 and 3 have more of a following fanbase that still play them to this day, at least in Japan and some latin american countries.

Shin Butoden was such a missed opportunity. It's not really the "most passable", it's actually the worst of the Butoden games gameplay-wise. Completely broken and unbalanced (special attacks can take up to 1 and a half life bar), and the worst aspect is the super tiny, claustro stages that simply ruin the whole fun of Butoden games (having big stages so you can dash around, making use of the split screen). They added a 2nd mini-stage you can knock your opponent into, but that just makes the stage even more closed. I don't know what was going on in Shin Butoden's development, but they fucked up big time. A shame because the roster is pretty good. Not a big fan of the digitalized character sprites though, they look washed out and like cut-outs.
The best DBZ fighting games are Butoden 2, 3, Buuyuu Retsuden and Hyper Dimension.
DBZ Legends is interesting from a presentation stand-point, gameplay is a bit dull and repetitive but also original and kind of mimmicks the air battles in DBZ.
PC Engine's game is also interesting and pulls a similar gimmick as Shin Butoden with being able to knock your opponent to another layer of the arena, but does it better.
For RPGs, the Famicom RPGs and Super Saiya densetsu on SFC are all worth playing for all the different scenarios you can trigger depending on how you decide to play the game.
Similarly, there's the cult games Super Gokuuden 1 and 2 which cover the whole Goku story from the beginning of DB up until becoming a Super Saiyan and defeating Freeza, these are a weird mix of quiz games/visual novel and odd RPG-ish battles, also have a lot of alternate "what if" scenarios.

The meat of these games is playing VS with friends, as every other fighting game.
However, Super Butoden 2's story mode is really good, a shame they never replicated that.
