Welcome to the world of retro gaming. You've got a lot to look forward to. My recommendation is Blaster Master. It's similar to Mega Man in that it's an action platformer with a great soundtrack. Also, you get upgrades for your vehicle when you defeat bosses, so it meets a lot of the checkmarks that MM hits. It also shares similarities with many Metroidvania style games. It was remade several years ago as Blaster Master Zero, which is also worth checking out.
