If you're ready to be raped and pillaged, and hopefully learn and re-take earth and more, then the first, X-com UFO Defense, if you're casual as fuck, play X-Com Enemy Unknown (not to be confused with UFO Defense's European name, Unknown Enemy).

If you choose the later, you'll never know how fun it is to send tons of rookies to their deaths with stun rods, and the true horror that is picture related. You will never feel excited as your units grow and continue to not die through missions, and you won't be as easily tempted to ragequit if your powerful unit does die.

As much as I want to argue about this, the new XCOM is a disappointment if you enjoyed the first 3 xcoms. If you didn't like the original after getting a grasp of the controls, you might like the new one then.
