everything else is bullshit, you get the rare Mage/Fighter encounter you may as well reset.

I've played far more FF1 than FF3, so my opinion might be a little skewed, but while FF1 does have surprise encounters with nasty stonetouch/deathtouch enemies, the game itself is a little easier strategically than FF3 in the sense all the encounters it gives you are completable with any party, while FF3 tries to force you down certain paths to beat enemies.

In FF1, you have the powerhouse that is the Fighter that's pretty much good at all stages of the game since he takes little damage and hits hard, and the black belt starts to eclipse him in damage and defense around the mid 20s. Black Mages can feel a little weak, but their spells can wipe enemies out quickly later on with multi-target stuff, such as casting Lit3 against water shrine enemies or Fir3 in the ice cave. White Mages and Red Mages both have good utility to bring about, and the only class that really feels kind of weak is the Thief, whose promotion makes him better, but comes very late and still isn't equal to a Knight or Master.

FF3 often expects you to do things in a certain way without much wiggle room, while some of these things are obvious, some of the forced mage parts can be tough just because your whole party is now made of squishy characters that have to watch their MP, along with requiring expensive spells to actually attack things. Garuda's lighting attacks are another point where you're expected to use Jump to dodge it.

My first RPG, circa 1991.
My brother gave it too me along with his NES, SMB+dh, SMB2, Tetris...
The map, monster list, and item list included were awesome(all this for a videogame, HOLY SHIT!)
Music was good for the time, and some of the tunes are still awesome, especially in the PSX Origins version.
The Sea Shrine theme from the Origins ver. is a very nice theme, as is the Earth Cave/Volcano theme.

My, my brother, even older sister and bro-in-law would take turns seeing who could beat it faster with the highest levels and most stuff found.

Fun times. Having Warmech ambush my brother's party and him getting pissed as fuck(and warning me where that sneaky cunt lies in wait with a 1/256 change of showing) is a fond memory.

But nothing beats the Ice Cave for FF difficulty.
