Not really. There were some decent console roguelikes on limited hardware.

My mid 20's was when I got bored with them too. FFIX and BoFIV kind of did me in. They were both good fun but I was pretty done by the end. I started so many PS2 and GC rpgs and almost never made it past the 5 hour mark. That was pretty much it for the most part.

Etrian Odyssey is interesting, but the grind gets boring Fantasy Life was fun, but that's more just an open world game. I get my RPG jiggies from roguelikes now, which is maybe appropriate since they got me into rpgs in the first place.

It's not retro, but I would recommend Powder. It's one of my favorites. Fairly straight forward in that it follows the premise of just getting to the bottom of a 25 floor dungeon, killing Beelze'bub and getting out.

But it's got really complex interactions, including a very interesting deity system. There's a pantheon of gods who basically align to classes like wizard, barbarian, cleric, etc and they're all watching what you do. The wizard god likes it when you cast spells, the barbarian god hates it, and whatnot.

I've been playing it for years and usually die at least a dozen times in between each time I actually win. It was programmed for GBA, but has all sorts of versions. I play the PSP one. Find it here.

I would also recommend Rouge itself which is the game that all these came from. You can play it in browser here https://archive.org/details/msdos_Rogue_1983

Shiren the Wanderer, Nethack and Angband could also a;; be good starting points.

I suppose you're right. Even still, the length of battles in EO doesn't bother me at all. Partially because the game aside from that is so fantastic in my eyes. Different strokes I guess, and that's cool.

I would say Shiren is more of a minimalist roguelike than a beginner one, but I could certainly see that. It does have some things like being able to leave items along the way and build up weapons over several plays if you want. But taken straight where you just try to dive through the game with what you find on your way is still a ton of fun for me.

I should note though, that it was really Rogue that I was a massive fan of. I like ADOM, Nethack and the like, but have always gravitated towards more minimalist ones. My all time favorite was originally made for GBA of all things.

That's why I described it as minimalist. It's quite a bit different from more robust roguelikes like NetHack. It's a bit more like a blend of a JRPG and a roguelike. I can understand it not appealing to everyone, but I love it.

I should note though, I tend to prefer the more stripped down ones. Rogue was my favorite game as a kid and it's pretty simple in a lot of ways. My other favorite which isn't retro, but whatever is called POWDER. Originally made for the GBA, it's closer to Rogue than NetHack. Like Shiren, the difficulty comes from some of the limitations you have.

Not him, but in my opinion that's a pretty good description of Roguelikes. Like the guy above pointed out, there are some where going up and down in floors is useful, but the general essence of what makes a Roguelike fun is that tension and always pushing forward despite the odds.

If you want to try one, I would recommend POWDER as a good place to start. It's fairly simple as the genre goes, a little more like Rogue was than the big Roguelikes, but still highly complex compared to most other games. It will give you a good taste of what makes them so good and if you like it there's plenty of places to branch out.
