That wasn't my experience, and in general people did use it. I traded a lot with friends and my brother. Battling we did less, and our team's levels were often mismatched so it was just a one-sided slaughter. Depending on your situation it might've been harder to arrange trading/battling (Pokemon banned at schools, parents wouldn't let you meet up with friends, etc.). That and as cool as the link cable was, it was kind of a pain to use sometimes. You're right though that just showing off your Pokemon was always popular.
