Okay OP, first off disregard everything in this thread before this post. Second off, don't play 1-3. They're shit. But if you absolutely must play them, emulate the PS1 port called Llylgamyn. Its in japanese but you can go in the options and make the game 99% english. Do not play the nintendo ports. They are worse than the DOS versions.

6-8 is when things really get good. The combat, map design, atmosphere, pretty much everything is way better. When you get to Wiz7, play the DOS version, not the PC version, Gold. Gold is kind of fucked up and both versions usually come packaged together anyways.
