>RNG ... objectively shitty mechanic in any sort of competitive context.

That's, just, like, your, opinion, man. And a really stupid one at that. I mean, what do you think about games like Poker?

Anyway, the probabilistic nature of RPGs is supposed to simulate the complex nature of the actual world. When you have two things of comparable strength competing against each other, the outcome is not always certain whether every intended action each makes will succeed. I think it makes things more interesting because unexpected situations happen in which you need to have a flexible strategy, which can give games more depth. If I rely on my 20% chance-to-kill desperation attack every time, my strategy wouldn't be very good.

For example, in Pokemon if Fissure hit every time the game would be broken. You could then argue that Fissure shouldn't exist, but then you're just picking and choosing at that point. What you say some people in competition want is not Pokemon, but something with different rules and a Pokemon wallpaper.

Personally what would irks me isn't randomness in outcomes, but randomness in how rules are applied. This isn't a problem in video games unless there is a bug, but modern sports still haven't phased out the ref completely.

OP here back from work.

For an idea of the scale of game that we should try to make, here are a few I've put together in the past:

filedropper.???/phoenix_1 replace ??? with com. stupid filter
filedropper.???/jormungandr
filedropper.???/pong

Let's review the ideas of the day:
>>2447097 Brawler
>>2447124 Sea shore sim
>>2447283 Already made pong (added spike mechanic)
>>2447378 Something with mode 7
>>2447441 Shmup
>>2447497 Tower of Heaven
>>2447570 Water flow game
>>2447574 Fucking RPG

I like the brawler idea, but AIs complicated, and 2p is easy. Sea shore sounds cool, but too involved for this project. Try my pong if you want. Good mode 7 would need HDMA, which I also think is too involved. I really want to make a shmup, but once again AI. Tower of heaven is a scroller, so to simplify things, no. I have a water flow game in the back of my mind, and even though I think this is a great idea, I think a fast game will be more engaging for this thread. RPG would be relatively easy, but I want to keep the 'game modes' to a minimum (ie world map, battle screen, map transitions, etc.).

So this is what I propose: a very simple 1 screen 2d platformer/fighter with a gravity switch mechanic that's jointly controlled by the players. Players can attack like link in Zelda 2 (maybe no duck, but block). Gravity is controlled by a counter both players can increment/decrement at will.

Tight play control will be balanced by frantically trying to switch gravity at inopportune times.

I'll wait for some feed back, but then we'll start getting down to business.

It probably wouldn't be that hard to map out what the 74x's do. That EEPROM probably has at most 12 address pins, so the program is pretty tiny. Can you dump the ROM and post it somewhere? Maybe then it will become clear what this things for...
