I'm about to play SMT 1 for the first time.

Any tips for a beginner? I've only played the spin-off, that's my first SMT game

Shin Megami Tensei has a lot of greta boxart, sadly most aren't retro though.

Besides Megami Tensei games, were there any good retro dungeon crawlers for consoles? I know tons of PC ones, some of which were ported like Might and Magic, but were there any good console-exclusive ones?

Just got done playing the first Shin Megami Tensei, was pretty fun. It's definitely aged quite a bit, with a very rudimentary demon fusion system and pretty clunky controls but I would easily recommend it to anyone who wants a challenging JRPG.

SMT1 is late night comfy core.

All of the Megami Tensei games on the Super Famicom have god-tier coverart. A few of the later games have awesome art too, but none of them stand up to the Sufami covers

This. I'm not a big fan of the typical Final Fantasy wannabe as well. I prefer JRPGs with different settings like SMT, Mother or Live A Live.

Anyone here played the original SMT? I listened to a podcast about it recently and it sounded interesting so I thought I'd try it. I beat Phantasy Star 1 last year so I thought I'd be fine with old JRPGs but this is a whole other level of complexity. Plus since there's never been an official English translation the item/spell names are often inconsistent in the few FAQs and wikis I can find.
I have a pretty good grasp of the basic mechanics but am still mystified by alignments, races, demon fusions, what gemstones do, etc.
I really like the concept of the game and the mechanics seem cool but it's just too obtuse and there's little information out there (in English at least). Should I keep trying to power through, or just give up and try out one of the later games?
