It's fairly linear really, but with some opportunities for backtracking and exploration. Its somewhere between mega man and metroidvania.

If you want the best ending, you need to find a bunch of shit. But you can also just power through it. Honestly it's probably a better experience like that because the real final boss can suck my nuts. Took me longer than anything else in that game.

It's not as big or expansive as Super Metroid but it's got incredible gothic art direction and music, beautiful pixel art, and the gameplay is overall very pleasent and fun.

I wouldn't say it's particularly easy by the standards of metroidvania's. Most of those games are easy. Demon's Crest does have a few genuinely challenging late-game boss fights.
