I wonder how these look like. Today you could squeeze a 480p movie down to 700MB and it would still look decent with something like AV1 but with the kind of codecs I'm guessing the DC can decode a 700MB movie probably looks like shit on it

it's just a VCD. MPEG1 quality. I don't know if Dreamcast can play SVCDs.

your decoder gonna choke on cpu. if you using exotic codecs to save on space like h265. you must have hardware accel or it gonna stutter. i had issues with playing back 720p h265 on android tv sticks of all things
needless to say older devices wont even support it, but psp supports h264 so that's something and pretty modern. especially considering it came out in 2004 when most devices still coped with xvid/divx and mpeg1/2

if they're 1CD then they're divx avi played with DCDivx which goes out of sync pretty much immediately once you start playing. if they're 2 disc then they might be gypplay which works fine with mpeg1

I doubt it. Nearly everyone already had a VCD player by the time the DC came out and they were cheap fuck. But it seems kinda retarded that they wouldn't just make it an out of the box feature since it can do it. Maybe it would have been too embarrassing to be flogging their console as a VCD player against the PS2 that was a DVD player?

hardly surprising given Sony was always pushing their tech superiority to the limits and trying to shove everything possible into their newest game consoles especially.

A kind of complicated and irrelevant question. But I guess I should have been more precise, knowing the ultra high level of autism on this board.
By the time the DC was released, nearly every living person who would ever watch a VCD already had a device capable of playing VCDs available for their use.
I in no way meant to imply that nearly every Amish baby had their own personal VCD player, that nearly every tomb had been reverse raided and a VCD player installed or whatever else the statement "ackshually implies". Also, the context of the conversation was Asia.

I think I remember reading that there was a custom "3D Memory" chip inside the cartridges that helped them store all that data. I do know that the combo feature cartridges look even worse than the regular ones as they had to squeeze two movies on one cart.
