Why did it not live up to the first one? Is it really as bad as people say?

It did. Modern Q1 community (you know the type) is just very loud with historical revisionism.
>Is it really as bad as people say?
No. It's a fun game, with a great multiplayer. The game was popular as fuck at the time of release.
Arguably, Quake 3 is more popular than both though.

It's pretty good, I like it a lot - it's just nothing like Quake 1 (... And was originally a different game, as you probably know...)

It's like if The Fifth Element was the canonical sequel to Starship Troopers.
People might prefer one or the other, but they're both good, they're just not the same.

I like the remaster quite a bit but god damn the new attack on the Berserker's is just awful. There's really no viable way to dodge it when most of the game is enclosed corridors. Who the fuck thought that was a good idea? Nerfing the Rail Gun is strange too.

>> No.10208316

Too many humanoid enemies. Too many samey industrial + crates environments. Too orange (although I've heard that has to do with certain renderers and software looks better). Q2 feels like a transitional game to me, with the missions and hub-type structure to some of the objectives, but mixed with old-fashioned arcade blasting of fairly mindless enemies scattered through the rooms. Not a bad game by any stretch but it's easy to see why Half-Life and Unreal made such a splash.

No it's not.

The og maybe, the questionable choices like making hexen like hub systems for the main campaign with the lack of aesthetic that had the previous id games made it worse. But the new ai improvement, the items wheel and the compass makes it way better.

The game is still better than the previous quake: it has the best deadmatch system, a way better soundtrack, better sound design and the weapons are hella fun, even the expansions ones.

It's just more infamous than it's predecesor. And the nostalgia has a big role.

>> No.10208909

People joke about Quake 1 being "brown" but it is kind of an interesting visual feast in some regards, with its variety of monsters and demons and Evil Dead-ripoff environments. Quake 2 in comparison feels like just sucking on an old coin, the taste of metal and nothing else. "Stroggification" is pretty damn boring to start with, then it just gets progressively moreso as you realize every single enemy is just "random metal+flesh abomination 4351b"

I don't know if any of the Quake games have particularly good gameplay.
That's one of those things people don't like hearing, but I've just never felt that compelled to put much time into playing them compared to Doom, or Duke, or Goldeneye, or Turok even.
There's just kind of a lot of walking around samey looking levels, with shooting that doesn't feel that great.

I'm going to assume the multiplayer scene more or less carried these at the time, but that's not something I particularly care about.

Levels in Q2 made me off. Even when getting through Q1 for the first time you move through levels fast. Yes, sometimes you need to go back and forth, but still Q1 levels are fun to swim though. While in Q2 levels are a total mess of sharp ends and rooms packed with useless machinery and crates.

It was a new iteration of ID Tech. Technically better on everything compared to Quake, and the one that made online playing truly popular, but...

It was a completely different game and Quake in name only. I loved everything about quake, but QII was an absolute miss for me. I did not like the atmosphere, music, and I found the campaign level designs much worse.

What kinda sucks is that quake II became the standard of what people think of when they hear Quake, all the sequels followed Q2, and the original Quake ended becoming the "weird one".

Average Sandyfag post.

Doom 2 is a way better than the first Doom. While in the first doom, sandy ruined the two last episodes, being only really good the first episode, Doom 2 had a lot more memorable maps, including the Sandy ones. The supershotgun, one of the most iconic weapons in shooters, appears there. All the new enemies are a great addon (except pain elemental) and even more memorable than the doom 1 ones. It had an engine improvement, optimizating it for bigger and more complex maps with more enemies in it.

Fuck you retard.
