Best is subjective. Picrel is definitely my favorite and not because of the Disney license, but because it’s the best non-standard Tetris. I think there is a “regular” mode but in the story mode you are always going against an opponent, and the better you do the more you can fuck them over with retarded shapes and they can do the same to you.
It’s also on PS1 but I had it on N64.
It’s by and away the least appreciated version of Tetris ever. It also has amazing spritework.

It's a launch sequence of the Buran, which was the Soviet equivalent of the US's Space Shuttle. Tetris was originally developed in Soviet Russia.

The Russians saw the proliferation of Tetris fever as a cultural win for them, the ending is quite clever indeed.

Tetris Plus for PS1. Has the usual Tetris gameplay, but the main thing is a puzzle mode where you try and get a guy to the bottom of the stage as quickly as possible, all while the ceiling actively trying to kill the guy in the playing field. Honestly a really fun take on the game.

>> No.10424665

Not really that big on Tetris, but the main ones are NES/Gameboy (slight differences), TGM1, TGM3, and then guideline (which are basically all the same afaik)

They had an improved clone of the Space Shuttle, it was a big deal at the time. More payload and cheaper than the heavy launch systems of the day. Plus they shot a nuclear x-ray space laser into space on the same platform. Sucker can fry half a city, WOMP.

Yeah the claim is it fired its retro booster at the wrong instant or something and it never made it into orbit. But it made it into orbit. The principle is you have special glass rods doped with something or other, and you aim them at the target and then light off a nuclear bomb sitting at the other end of the rods, the pulse of light excites the rods to lase which they do for a tiny instant before they're destroyed by the blast, the energy produced can fry a city.

They were banned by treaty but that didn't stop the USSR.

The West soured on the USSR because all the jews Stalin kicked out were given leadership positions in the west. Because of this, “the west” has a permanent axe to grind with Russia. Don’t call it antisemitism, it’s the truth with historical proof. “The West” worked with Russia during WW2 so far in that Germany was deemed a far larger threat to “the west”. The absolute moment victory in Europe happened, the Cold War started.
Flash forward to 2023 and even though the Cold War ended, absolutely nothing has changed. We are in the third phase of the Cold War and the same exact parties are still in play. See: Ukraine.

In fact, it would be far more scandalous to have a game with an ending that promotes Russian culture in a positive light now in 2023 than it was in 1989.

In short, it’s a very clever ending. A game about stacking the correct building blocks ends with an advanced shuttle launch. Now THAT is narrative done right.

It was literally perfect for the platform, a short time waster game where you could play while riding in the car or whatever. Longer games were problematic, you might get to wherever it was you were going and your parents would make you shut off the Game Boy when you got there.

Today you can play every version yourself on an emulator, I have one on the PSP that's pretty good actually. I forget what it's called though.

It’s a puzzle game about stacking blocks efficiently. Your efficiency in stacking these building blocks is rewarded with a cutscene of the Russian shuttle blasting off. The significance of all of this is that you “built” the rocket. In 1989, the rights to Tetris were owned exclusively by the Soviet Union, meaning your purchase of Tetris funded more of these endeavors.

Myself, I don't understand the love for the NES version, it really makes you hammer the controls to place the piece.

That's the issue I have with a majority of retro Tetris titles, is that controlling the piece is laborious, you really had to mash inputs and there was no reliable input buffering.
Tetris DX didn't have this issue, and is my go-to for vanilla retro, though that Rosy Retrospection hack for the original Tetris is really good.

One of the big problems with retro Tetris is that at top speeds, it's not physically possible to move pieces all the way to the left or right. This encourages you to build stacks with a central well for your I-pieces, but effective stack building works better with a 9-wide versus a 4-wide+5-wide.

There's also that modern Tetris uses the 7-bag system to make sure you don't go too long without any specific piece. Retro Tetris is genuinely random with its piece distribution, which can lead to extend periods where you just do not get the piece you need to clear a Tetris.
Even without modern stuff like hold pieces and ghost pieces, or previewing the next 5 pieces, modern Tetris plays a lot better and has consistent rules for the rotation axis, what rotations are possible in certain formations, and even what colors the pieces must be. I love these standards.

If I had any idea how to do it, I'd love a Rosy Retrospection of Tetris DX that adheres to all the modern Tetris guidelines.

Everything else being the same these two have the best graphics and music to chill out to and 4 player multiplayer
The New Tetris has every line made count to build wonders of the world and they are very cool 3D real time scenes so every game you play counts not only for personal best score but also for unlocking cool stuff
