I have a 1.0 Xbox and I'm really surprised that the HDD hasn't shit itself on me yet. I'd like to mod in a new SATA HDD or maybe even an SSD but I'm not looking to fully mod my Xbox
I want to keep it as close as I can to working stock. This means original dash and still popping in my dvds when I want to play
I'm probably going to end up recapping it and cleaning up the dvd tray anyway but I was wondering what the best way to clone a new drive in would be
It would be really nice if I could keep my old profile and saves but I'm willing to lose them if it means the console will work for another 10 years
Also, should I go with an HDD for authenticity or upgrade to an SSD for longevity?

I've seen people argue over ssd longevity since the og xbox writes a lot to storage. But I personally dont know how much merit it has. That said i am using an ssd myself, just don't expect significantly faster speeds if you do.

Actually, the past participle of shit is "shitten".

It's a colloquialism so I don't think proper grammar applies
The drive is not actually shitting

Can't you just just stick a usb in and save them to a flash drive? It's temporary sure but if you're really scared you could always do that and then store it on a pc or two.

Am I able to just dump those onto a USB?
I don't remember the Xbox having USB-A ports anywhere and Im not sure I can transfer files through the controller ports (meaning the Xbox doesn't have a tool, not that the ports are incapable)

Not him but you need one of these shits and a USB stick under 1 GB

Most if not all modern SSDs have trim support built in which mitigates the small write problems that would wear down the drive. This was an issue but isn’t really any more.

>> No.10921895

Install a softmod anyways, you can boot into the normal dashboard with no issues

This. It works better with an older 512mb usb drive.

Also fyi, Xbox controller ports are USB ports just configured to an Xbox controller ports, so you could look up schemes and wire a USB connector to a controller cord iirc

Here's a good tut. You don't need to solder just some electrical tape should do fine for a quick solution.

trim has to be supported by the OS, xbox probably does not have that since it predates commercial sata ssds by like 7 years.

anyway it's irrelevant, go ahead and try to compute the average data you write to an ssd every day and divide it by the TBW value, you'll get something like 80 years of life expectancy. By that time everything else would have failed in the drive since they are built down to only work for 3-5 years max.
And you wouldn't have your OG Xbox turned on non stop either, so you wouldn't max out even the shittiest commercial SSD by putting it in an OG xbox.

What you want to do is remove the clock capacitor and refurbish the optical drive.
I just did the optical drive on my OG xbox. It's been purring like a kitten since.
Old HDD are incredible stout as long as you don't drop them. I've killed HHDs by dropping them on the floor in the past.

You gotta open your xbox up and figure out which optical drive it has. Mine had the Thomson TGM600 drive. Then you replace the whole drive tray assembly.. requires soldering two tiny wires. Super easy.

Not too sure what's involved to fix the samsung opti drives though..

I literally just bought a 1.0 modded XBOX because mine completely "shitten" the bed after a power surge. 1TB of storage, so any recs? The usual suspects are all accounted for, of course.

Before you do anything (and if you're not using any hard mods) just be sure you back up your EEPROM key (or null it, though you won't be able to use Insignia) or you'll be in pain city. Trust me, I speak from experience.

Indeed. It's a big problem on /vr/ these days.

Depends on how much effort you wanna put:
>what the best way to clone a new drive in would be
truth be told, I can't say much on this, as I went full hardmod where cloning isn't needed much due to softmodding being a bitch, but chimp is the most popular method.
>This means original dash and still popping in my dvds when I want to play
You can configure modchips to boot straight from the internal BIOS, allowing it to be 1:1 stock experience, optionally booting into a modded menu when wanted.
>should I go with an HDD for authenticity or upgrade to an SSD for longevity?
Easiest experience for softmoding is simply buying a new-old-stock IDE drive that supports locking (iirc this is the site everyone uses to this day https://xboxdrives.x-pec.com/?p=list)), as SATA2IDE for the OG XBOX is a motherfucker without a hardmod (HDD and DVD drive are connected, so if the DVD drive doesn't like the adapter you're shit out of luck.)

>as SATA2IDE for the OG XBOX is a motherfucker without a hardmod
what?
just buy startech and attach a hdd once you have softmodded it

>I'm really surprised that the HDD hasn't shit itself on me yet
I have a second-hand 80GB IDE HDD from 2003 in my softmoded OG Xbox, and it still works perfectly to this day over 20-years-later. I can fit 24 games with their applicable DLC and updates on there, which is plenty for me. Never understood why people would try put 2TB HDDs in an OG Xbox.
