After playing the first three Splinter Cell games I want more. Want to ask about the 'retro' version of Double Agent, is it only good on the OG Xbox? I don't have it unfortunately and want to know if it's okay on the PS2 or the GC as well, which of these ports should I play? I have a PS2 and a Wii

>> No.10921806

Only played the 360 version, it was decent but a big step down from Chaos Theory.

True. Pandora and Chaos were peak

Honestly I don't expect it to be on par with SC1, PT and CT because it would be too good to be true. I've heard that the 6th gen version of it is good if you like Chaos Theory though

>> No.10921902

i enjoyed the ps2 version back when it came out, it's not as good as CT but solid enough.
it's way worse graphically compared to xbox obviously, but I don't know if they simplified the level design too, that's what kills it for me, but I've been considering emulating the xbox version if that's possible, I have no experience with xbox emulation though.

played the 360 version for the first time a few months back, surprised at how good it is, underrated. also a much more unforgiving stealth experience than chaos theory. great voice acting and story playing with the idea of the blurred line between a terrorist agency and a government one.

severely underrated.

>is it only good on the OG Xbox?
the og xbox version isn't good, absolute slog of a copy paste campaign. only thing going for it is them borrowing the base gameplay from chaos theory.

I wouldn't say Pandora gets a lot of hate (look at Conviction for comparison, lol), but it did have quite a few points against it which is why it's seen as the weakest of the first 3 Splinter Cell games.
>singleplayer felt too short and more like an expansion pack to the first game rather than a proper sequel
>some of the missions were retreads of missions from the first game. Paris felt like a mashup of Kalinatek and the freezer section of Mouke Tsoe Bo Meats and the second Indonesia mission was a blatant ripoff of the Vselka Submarine DLC, even down to some of the dialog between Lambert and Fisher
>the voice acting was appallingly bad aside from Ironside's and Haysbert's performances (even then, Haysbert's voice acting felt a bit phoned in)
>for a game that's based around hiding in the shadows, the shadow graphics didn't look all that great even compared to its predecessor (shadows in the PC version had big fucking jaggies for some stupid reason, even at max settings)
>there's some serious, game breaking bugs in the PC version of PT that weren't really possible to fix until dgVooDoo2 came out

Also back right before PT was released I remember the big deal about it was the announcement of Spies vs Mercenaries. It was great but that mode was completely overshadowed by CT's version of SvM when that was released (though personally I wished they included more multiplayer maps in CT like Cinema, Hospital, and Vertigo).

I think one of the console versions of Pandora Tomorrow was different and it was clearly inferior. Also the PC version isn't sold on Steam because something about modern GPUs causes the game to crash.

Replacing the light meter with the stoplight system was a galaxy-brained move
I'm not colorblind, but I remember having some trouble discerning if I was completely invisible vs. at risk of being spotted.
Oh, and it was also the first Splinter Cell to drop the health bar and med stations in favor of regenerative health. Thanks Ubi Shanghai, very cool.

Definitive =/= Good. I wouldn't even call it Chaos Theory 2, more like Chaos Theory 1.5 or Chaos Theory: The Lost Levels. Also checked.

It's pretty shit. Saying it's like a romhack is a little generous, it just feels bootleg as hell. I don't care how similar the gameplay is, the level design is so shit that it might be the worst game in the series actually

yeah in a way it's too tight/trial and error, but it can be tense that way. on the other hand i wish chaos theory had more unforgiving stealth, because the way the ai behaves makes the game far too easy and a lot less involving once you know the best route through.

>> No.10922214

>>10922104

i guess it made sense as a lot of games at that time were trying to eliminate hud as much as possible, but yeah it's so easy to miss especially when you're so focused on movement/environment.

>> No.10922529

Xbox OG V2 DA is on par with SC1, PT and DA V1.

The coop is the peak of the series, overall with some unrefined bits and levels that aren't super exciting thematically.

A full room of spies vs spies is a blast, and the ps2 version has missing gadgets like cloak that make it shit. Never play ps2 for anything other than pt versus.

>> No.10922537

some randomized enemy placements like the rainbow six games would've been cool, but a lot of CT's levels are pretty tightly scripted so it would be a tradeoff. Maybe that could've been a feature for the higher difficulty modes

>> No.10922824

>>10922537

it would have been great if non-story-essential ai were randomised. i think CT is great for the story and idea, but I somehow think it could have been more expansive. levels become very short once you know the way.

especially since changes in difficulty only affect how much life you have, if you're not getting into combat the game plays identically

It has been said multiple times, the PS2/Gamecube versions of first 3 Splinter Cell are butchered ports with cut down levels and lots of annoying loading screens besides having worse graphics, however the Double Agent port is fine and doesn't have nearly as many level design changes.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pKMRqHh3TFs

Also stay away from the PC version of DA, it's so broken and buggy it's almost unplayable.

The PS2 version at least feels like an actual stealth game and I prefer having one trust meter, in the PC version it is nearly impossible to get zero trust and the system is nearly meaningless

>> No.10926349

Played 360, bad pc port and horrible ps3 port, OG xbox and ps2 versions (both emu and on ps2)

PS2 has castrated levels and worse visuals compared to og xbox so way less places where you can kill lights (no dynamic lighting) and dithering. Levels are also cut up and changed to reflect inferior hardware.

But on the good side, ps2 has 2 bonus levels which map-wise are just rips from psp version, but are interesting enough (Sam's daughter being kidnapped, Sam getting captured and drugged)

If you have dolby pro logic decoder then you will also have an actual surround sound.

Overall, if you have a buddy with an OG xbox or even a 360 (title is back compaitable) i'd play on that to not worsen the experience, and once you finish it on the xbox play the bonus levels on PS2.

oh I was sleepy last night but since the thread is still alive I will tell you why I prefer the PC version over PS2.

PC:
>has 2 meters for the 2 factions meaning you need to do quests for both to maintain your cover
>bigger hub world
>the story is more fleshed out
>game looks like an upgrade from Chaos Theory
>more character development and interaction with the terrorists
>the Lambert scene
>missions are varied and unique
>secret last level

PS2:
>1 meter for both factions, meaning if you do one thing for one, you are automatically losing trust in another which doesn't make any sense like how the terrorists know that I did a mission for the agency?
>looks and plays exactly like Chaos Theory, it felt like an expansion pack
>hub areas are so small
>zero character development and interactions with the terrorists
>Emile magically out of nowhere finds out that you are in restricted areas and tells you to go back with a timer
>missions are disconnected, many story elements are missing
>overall the missions are less fun and look similar to CT

I also have often heard about DA for OG Xbox being better. I have it but have yet to play it.
