Any love for the TG-16?

I don't know much about the system or it's library. Can someone here help me get into it? I have a wii to play titles that are on VC.

There an exceptional port of the original R-type. I believe it is available through the VC.

Neutopia II.
Magical Chase.
Somer Assault.
Soldier Blade.
Parasol Stars.
Dragon's Curse.
Final Lap Twin.
New Adventure Island.
>Grolious Nippon-exclusive title: Bomberman '94.
Jackie Chan's Action Kung Fu.
Bonk Trilogy.
Air Zonk.
Shockman.
Cadash.
>TG16 ver is the most faithful to the arcade ver.
Deep Blue.

Those are games that I personally owned hard copies of and highly recommend. It wasn't too big a problem to play them on a GT system as GTs were inexplicably exempt from region lock.

The system is rather tragic. It's a system as good, or better than the Snes or MD, but because of bad marketing, bad decisions, and bad luck, it never caught on in the West. In Japan however it sold well.

The stupid decisions range from big to small. Everything about the Western release is incompetent and stupid. They would take the original covers and then make awful new covers that look like children's drawings. Maybe it's a rights thing where they'd have to repay the artist. But that hurts the brand a lot. Some of the ads are insane. Jonny Turbo, who is this fat idiot is one of the Western ad campaigns.

Just look at this idiot. Someone thought this would be a good mascot for the system.

As for the console itself, It's got a big library and a lot of really good games. A lot of arcade ports, and a lot of CD games. Oh that's the other thing. Whereas Sega CD did okay, and was kind of niche, the PCE-CD actually did pretty well. That's why Sega and then Nintendo thought they had to bring out CD addons.

We call it the PC-Engine. That's the original name for it, and it's way cooler than the tryhard 90's name the West gave it.

While this system wasn't very successful in America it was a big 4th gen contender in Japan, beating the Mega Drive in popularity. It's also the only console to have a successful CD add-on.(which the MD/Genesis and Jaguar unsuccessfully tried as well)

If you ever want to get physical hardware of this system, I would not recommend the American TG-16, as both the system and games are quite expensive overall. Instead, get a PC Engine Duo-R, which does not suffer from capacitor issues and runs almost all games including Hucard and CD. Also, there is no region locking on CD games.

If you just want some VC games to play, here are a few must-haves:
Akumajo Dracula X: Chi no Rondo(CD)(JP)(Castlevania Rondo of Blood)
Bomberman '94(JP)
Dungeon Explorer
Bonk's Adventure/Revenge(1&2)
Gate of Thunder(CD)
Air Zonk
Ys Book I&II(CD)
Seirei Senshi Spriggan(CD)
Soldier Blade

Johnny Turbo was originally made by a few employees of TTi(subdivision of NEC in charge of the TG-16 in it's later years) as a joke aimed at another employee, John Brandstetter. The Japanese higher ups thought it would make for a good ad campaign, clearly not understanding how American advertising works. Since the creators already knew the TG-16 was unsalvageable at that point, they just went along with it.

Or simply not from North America? Either way, pic related.
I provided the list >>1541441. Those are all fun games I owned physical copies of. I owned other games as well but they were either bad (Legendary Sword, Keith Courage) or not something I would expect to be widely enjoyed by a great number of people (Samurai Ghost, Order of the Griffin).
Neutopia I pales in insignificance in comparison to II and II itself isn't as good as other top down RPG-element adventure games (Zelda-likes) but is still a fairly enjoyable 'sperience.
