Whats with all the anime little girls in puzzle games? Im thinking of panel de pon and puyo puyo. I dont get it, the games are great in themselves, why do the japs surround them with little girls and why are the localizations so silly modified?

>> No.2116209

Japanese people liked that back then, westerners didn't.

Any questions?

Probably because kids would not want to play a game where you are a little girl, and if you do you be mocked for being a little pussy.

>> No.2116251

Pac-Man was designed to be cute so that women, an audience most Japanese arcades hadn't yet acquired, would try out a Namco maze game (http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/iwatani-pac-man-was-made-for-women).). Compile had the smart idea to use their assorted game characters for marketing a complex versus puzzle game building off of Tetris. Japanese puzzle games have focused on cuteness and personality for selling their games ever since; the audience playing these games for their mechanics assume that games designed by Compile or Sunsoft, or those sold by doujin circles, are going to build off of certain systems used in arcade classics. No surprises here, just a logical development over time.

Puyo Puyo is a spinoff of Madou Monogatari. It never got an anime though.

Even as an adult, i feel uncomfortable about playing games saturated with little anime girls. I think localizing companies at the time had the right idea.

They were changed as an attempt to increase sales. Guys would be considered not manly for playing a little girl game. Male kids and teenagers have pretty much always been the biggest console game demographic. Personally, I think the PDP characters are cute.

It's a cultural thing.

In Japan, puzzle games are considered "for girls", so they primarily feature girly characters with lots of pink and stuff.

Even Sokoban workers are portrayed with cute proportions, at least in Japan where they're a part of commercial releases.

Goddamn is Sokoban everywhere...never gets old, and even automatic solvers have trouble beating it.

Puzznic has 3D girls in the arcade and on the FM Towns if that's more your thing. Other ports were censored in Japan as well.

This is why I love these threads. I love Boxxle and never realized it was based off something.

Is it easy getting the early games to run? Recommend any console spinoffs?

>> No.2116602

>>2116474
For the PC versions, you can emulate the PC-88/-98 games with M88 and Neko Project II fmgen/T88/Anex86 respectively; the Spectrum Holobyte release (Soko-ban) is DOS, so DOSBox. Boxxle's an easy grab for Game Boy titles, and it can be emulated more easily than the originals. You should check out Atlus' Puzzle Boy series, which expands on Sokoban's mechanics with different game modes (first game was localized as Qwirk!, with a tomato dude on the cover).

Otherwise, sokoban's got tons of flash versions.

I feel like Robotnik and Yoshi made more sense anyway, considering they are (at least partially) representative of their respective platform. It seems like it would be easier to sell them regardless of region.

The idea of this box is cute. I'd like to get a bunch of them and recreate a puzzle from the same game in stop-motion (cardboard for the walls, maybe an amateur figurine assuming the walking/pushing sprites are mirrored). Better yet, trick a crow into solving a puzzle by offering food as a reward.

They're a definite reason for the original Puyo Puyo's production, since Compile had a bunch of characters from Madou Monogatari they wanted to use.
