About to play Final Fantasy VI, i've only played FF VII. anything i should know?

>> No.2154045

Bear with it for a few hours until it really gets going. Then you're in for some amazing shit. It loses steam near the end but wins it back with an amazing final boss. He's easy but the music is incredible.

Look up a guide for what to do about Shadow when you get to the Floating Continent (you'll know if it's the Floating Continent if you're on a floating continent), if you don't do a specific thing at this point, that character won't be available for the rest of the game.

Dont listen to this douchefaggot. FFVI used to be the gem in the rough, that nobody really took any notice to. For a long time it was more obscure than it is now, and not a lot of people held the opinion of VI being the best FF. But eventually a lot of people came to acknowledge that it was indeed a hidden gem and now its widely acknowledged as a great game. And then we have this hipster faggot whos all HURRR GAME TOO MAINSTREAM NOW HAVE TO HATE IT. As you can tell from his own post he only dislikes it because its "overrated". If nobody liked it it would be his favorite game.

VI is my second favorite game of all time. There are 14 characters, 12 of which have fleshed out stories that you can choose to complete or not. You'll have your favorites, you'll have the ones that you never use.

This game is all about the story. Whereas V is all about the job system, this game gives you an opportunity to experience a grand, operatic story.

The music is the best in the FF series. Even Uematsu has said that it's his favorite score from the series.

Give it a shot, play it for at least 6 hours and then evaluate. If you haven't gotten to Zozo, I don't think you've played far enough yet.

Have fun with it, OP. It's hands down my favorite FF game and a sparkling gem compared to the mediocrity of the next 3 games in the series.

Don't jump right away, wait.

Moogle > Wolf.

Choose the weapon over the summon.

Let all of your characters get sucked in.

When the Returners ask you to join, keep refusing.

Get the Cursed Shield, wear it in every battle (with a Ribbon), and it becomes the Paladin Shield after 256 battles won. Cursed Rings are shit, though.

She was for the first half of the game, I suppose. Of course, you only need three characters to ultimately beat the game in the WoR: Celes, Edgar and Setzer. In fact, the next time I play I plan on doing the CES challenge where they're the only characters you get. It's harder, but an interesting way to play the game. I only really use 6 or maybe 7 characters anyways. I'll really miss having Cyan and Sabin, though.

Why did they make Cyan so fucking useless, holy shit. All they had to do is to let you control other characters when his combo bar is loading and buff damage a bit. Just make player select any of his sword tech, and then order other characters around while his bar is reaching the point you've chosen.

I spent a ton of time getting all of his best rages (the ones that turn him into arguably your most robustly powerful character in the 1st half of the game and still one of the most powerful in the 2nd half). Even with the Rage FAQ, knowing about enemy pack queuing, and using Blackjack, that shit took forever. One of the good Rages is based on an enemy encountered only in Serpent Trench, and I with that section being so short I completely missed the enemy my first time through (discovered only after sinking hours into rage grinding, but granted i gained a ton of Ability Points). Was that shit amazingly frustrating/ cryptic back in the day, like one of those secrets that people would find out based on playground/ knitting-circle conversations? The Rage FAQ's introduction says that, before FFVI's ancient hex codings were decyphered, Gau was viewed as a relatively dull character — kinda useless unless you discovered certain high-power, specified-usage oddities such as Rhodox.

I played this game as a kid when it first came out. 2 friends of mine played it as well. We only had the official strategy guide and our own wits to aid as.

No one really used Gau. We thought leap/rage was cool but ultimately a gimmick.

I just started another play through a few days ago after not touching this game in a decade or more, and I'm actually grinding the veldt. It's really great. I've been crushing the WoB with Aspik, Cat Scratch, and some of the other rages.

I'm actually going to see if I can download the official strategy guide to see what it says about gau. I wonder if we all just missed it, or if it really wasn't known to be strong at the time.

Just leafed through the guide. All they really say is "you can learn lots of stuff" when you first get him and leave it at that. There's also a very unhelpful table in the back.

They mention lots of specific tricks (even vanish/doom) and strategies on bosses, but I never saw them recommend to use gau.

So yeah, none of my friends knew about the OPness back then at least.

I would just leap a couple of times and try out rages until I found 3-5 that were good enough, like Templar that had Fire2 before most of my people could/have learned it. Once those rages started to suck, I would go back and get a few more. A berserker character let me concentrate more on the characters that counted, another reason I love Umaro. Why have a beefcake where I have to select attack when I can have autobeefcake?

Also, I shared this before but again:

>Get to Shiva fight in the magitek facility
>Been using the brawler rage with Gau because it had high physcial damage and throw stone to confuse shit, also for high damage
>Fighting shiva
>Like, fourth turn
>Gau throws stone
>9999 damage
>Ifrit suddenly appears and the fight ends
>For the longest time have no idea what happened, thought I got incredibly lucky hit somehow
>Post this story on this board
>Anon informs me that if you are the same level as the enemy you throw stone at, it does 9999 damage
