It's been twenty years since it came out. Anyone else going to replay it? I've been playing since midnight here and I'm debating what I wanna do with my party this time. I kind of wish there was something like Four Job Fiesta for it. I know I would participate every year if there was.

Anyway, talk about Final Fantasy Tactics.

One of the best games I've ever had the fortune of playing. Twenty years since, and yet to be surpassed.

>Favorite character?

Argath. He is a master of using beautiful language to denigrate the poor.

Real answer: Delita and Ramza. The story hinged on them both being perfectly executed, and succeeded.

Hard to pick one, I'd say the entire run up to rescuing Thunder God. Just a great series of maps that build on one another culminating in fighting your way up the sleuce.

Weigraf, loved his character development. Starting as a rebel with noble intentions and flipping to a member of a secret organization with only revenge to spur him forward, I think he was amazingly done and incredibly natural. It's one of the few complete personality flips in games I feel is understandable and not abrupt.

As far as gameplay goes though, I like Mustadio because he rides the line between being a unique character but not being the game destroying monster that Orlando or Agrias were. Also, I like that his role in the game is more down to earth.

>Favorite battle
The Impure King. That was the point in which shit truly hit the fan for the first time, changing the game from one of political intrigue to "oh shit, there's some truly wicked stuff going on out there." It was good and bad, as the political intrigue was interesting and still went on, though at times the "ancient evil" plotline sort of stole from the more down-to-earth parts of the game.

>Favorite job
Lancer is my go-to, but I like the idea of chemist too. You've got a giant list of items with various curative effects, long range once you unlock guns which isn't based on your PA, and decent magic power if you go that route. You can have a lot of versatility with the class, although your HP pool will suffer for it.

I'd say it's a design flaw, especially since characters like TG Cid, Beowulf, Reis and Agrias have access to really good custom classes. Tactics Ogre is even worse at this because unique characters have better stats than generic ones.

Really, generic units are used when you decide that you're going to give yourself a bit more of a challenge and forego the use of unique units on a playthrough. Self-imposed challenges are meh to be honest, all these unique characters should have just been temporary guests like Larsa in FF12.

You could probably change Mustadio to a chemist since it sounds like you're having issues just keeping people up. If you can clear the rest of the map with your other units and just need to keep timers from hitting 0, then you should just focus on sandbagging one unit over and over to act as bait. Slap a wizard mantle on them too for some critical dodges to get an action once in a while as well.

You can also do what >>4072915 said and make a sturider party as well. Just make sure someone is carrying item since instant resurrection with no chance of RNG fuckery is pretty great.

To be clear since he's a newbie, "sandbagging" means reviving a unit over and over (phoenix down, raise, doesn't matter). The AI usually attacks the nearest unit with the fewest HP, so that's how the bait works

If you still have previous generics you can use them for this fight. You're not inclined to use special characters if you don't want to. Once you get past this fight you can travel the map again by moving past Lionel Castle. This will let you access the next tier of Castle Weapons from Igros, as well as the rest of the world.

Also as a pro tip since I can see this being handy. If you have a class that doesn't have throw item, when you use it on a square you can ignore vertical tolerance. So for example, Squad 2 starts below a pathway from above. If you have someone with item as a secondary without it, they can revive someone beneath them from above.

I think most of the uniques are actually pretty poor from an efficiency standpoint outside of Orlandu and Beowulf.

Agrias doesn't really come into her own until Perfumes and Knight Swords start showing up, which means Chapter 4, but at least you get a head start with training her up since she joins early. Also that base class is kinda shit, skillset aside.

Reis really only has good stats going for her. They're very nice good stats, but there's no practical difference against a generic if e.g you're using them both as Calculators and the generics has the advantage of being able to go on errands to cut down on the grind.

Samurai: Bad stats, good skillset on classes who aren't Samurai.

Lancer: Skillset is really boring but decent ranged damage - ironically it's a much better skillset to use when you're either equal or slightly slower than the enemy or super fast.

Yeah, this is definitely something I had to drill into other people when I talk about the game with other people. Special Units aren't really that broken except for the two you mentioned and it's arguable that they're still not as bad as Summoner can be in the US version. They just give the player more tools at their disposal, which is a fantastic thing in TRPGs.

>>4073385
Chemist is arguably one of the most broken classes in the game just due to its sheer utility. A lot of people fail to realize just how strong some jobs really are because of other more offensive candidates.

They're really not that bad at all, you just need to optimize for them. It's better to slap something like a robe on the Samurai, especially a wizard's robe, since it will boost their MA. Magic Attack Up will also boost it as well. This means that Draw Out on a high MA class like Wizard makes them a ridiculously powerful killing and healing machine.

A Lancer with concentrate will be able to snipe people across the map with their skills. Here's a neat tidbit from the challenge FAQ on Gamefaqs I remember reading back in the day that really helped me visualize it.

>Jumping Fact: A jump lands (50/Speed) clockticks after being used. A Lancer with 10 Speed lands in 5 clock ticks. A clock tickis the moment of time in which characters' CT increase. A brief example follows to make things crystal clear. The same 10 Speed Lancer has two targets. Both have Speed 8. The Bomb's current CT is 50. On the other hand, the Goblin's CT is 70. In 5 clock ticks, the Bomb's CT will be 90 (50 + (8*5)), and the Goblin will have his turn, and end up at 10 CT (70 + (8*5)). Obviously, the Lancer should choose to Jump on the Bomb, since it won't have a chance to move beforehand.

>> No.4075072

>>4074894
You don't need Concentrate - Jump is 100% hit except against Blade Grasp, which Concentrate wouldn't help anyway.

It also isn't affected by Attack Up for some reason, so Lancers can pack something like Throw Item in their Support slot

>They just give the player more tools at their disposal, which is a fantastic thing in TRPGs.
Path of least resistance means that whatever advantage they have (however slight) over other characters means that they're the correct choice to include.

And I'm someone who has mostly forced himself to use generics on my subsequent runthroughs. The problem is that I have to force myself to make a nonoptimal choice

Oh you're right, I must of been thinking of FFTA's Dragoon's jump, which is hot garbage accuracy wise. Not that Bangaa can even get concentrate in either of the advance games.

Even if it doesn't affect jump, I can kind of dig two hands on Lancers due to the high weapon power of lances.

Looking over the BMG again, it's kind of surprising to see what would be useful on a Lancer since their skill isn't really affected by the usual stuff. Probably have to use one on my replay of the game I'm going through.

I'm thinking of starting a new playthrough pretty soon too. My plan is to change everyone to chemists and do a full chemist playthrough, like it's Breaking Bad or Drugstore Cowboy or some shit.

I suppose they're the easiest thing given to the player to abuse up to that point. They're still not even the most potent option to use. A generic with summon magic will blow out special characters till the aforementioned Orlandu and Beowulf join the party. A summoner has the power of tier 3 Wizard elemental spells with a much wider range that are boosted by the likes of Lighting Rods and Wizard robes. Hell, just slap it on a wizard with short charge/magic attack up and you have a deadly caster that can nuke a few units over a wider distance than Agrias or Mustadio can. If you're playing the US PSX version they're probably on the same tier as Orlandu and company due to their spells resolving as fast as tier 1 Wizard spells.

That's just one example though, you can set up a lot of different generics that will perform just as well as special units for the majority of the game quite easily. Not that special units don't have their own good traits, but, it's not like generics are sub-optimal if you raise them properly.

T.G.Cid is also cool because he's such an unstoppable badass with actual morals in a world that shits on them. The astronomer kid too because of what he did.

>Favorite battle?
Good question. I like a lot of the battlefields, but when it comes to the battles themselves, I don't have a strong opinion. I like the lower levels best, and dorter trade city really sticks out among the early battles, because it introduces archers, knights, and mages, and I really like all the battles with strong vertical elements. A while back, I had an idea for a game that is basically pokemon fftactics

Where battles happen on little gridmaps just like fftactics, except between pokemon. However, they wouldn't necessarily have to be one-on-one; it'd be cool to have up to six on the trainer's side (potentially more than six if against wild pokemon or more than one trainer). Each pokemon would basically be it's own class, with different abilities and upgrades to choose from with experience. Trainers could use items on their turns (not sure if they'd move around and potentially be involved in the fights). Moves would affect areas like spells (flamethrower would be a line many blocks long but only one wide, for instance).

I also wish they'd do D&D games like this; turn-based and with grid maps that have elevation and different kinds of terrain

I remember reading about FFT in gaming magazines and being blown away

FFT is the only ps1 game that survived out of my entire childhood collection (ps1 or ANY consoles for that matter) - my grandmother saved it for me somehow despite both of us having several tumultuous moves (sometimes even out of state)

She kept it for years in the original black label jewel case with her gospel cds

Jump is such a hard skill to use optimally, but pretty great if you can.

The "charge time" is both one of its biggest strengths and weaknesses. The ability to remove yourself from the field and dodge anything the enemy can use is huge, and a jump landing does do a ton of damage, the only issue is actually striking with it. Seems like most targets are immune to root style effects like Don't Move or Sleep or whatever that would keep them pinned down, which means you really have to check the time to figure out how to use it.

For some reason people are nostalgiac for the original translation even though it's far less subtle - as an example from the top of my head, a character that is supposed to be halfheartedly attempting to keep a lid on some very transparent rage in the psp, simply shouts angrily in the PS1 original. It's a poor translation, and even though there is some badass dialogue resulting from the bluntless (like >>4069948) i don't think it's worth losing the great WOTL translation. As someone who enjoys FFT in all of its versions I wouldn't really call it nostalgic when I dislike the PSP translation. I feel the way it is written is florid, wasteful, and redundant. The writer didn't have a good grasp on how to write in an antiquated fashion. The language just adds clauses and loses clarity in some sentences. If Alexander O. Delita actually wasn't supposed to be a character. Early in development Ramza was split into two characters, himself and Delita. The chainsaw was more like establishing him at all.

When they revisited the game with WOTL, they actually developed Delita as a character since the original was a hackjob (not even from a translation point of view, I'm talking the original concept). Note how they added Delita cutscenes and actually allow you to control him for ~2 battles in WOTL, which wasn't in the original.

I enjoy trying to make Malak and Rafa work sometimes due to how bad they first appear to be when you first get them. I've come to find they're actually extremely component units if you choose to pair then with secondaries that can carry their situational primaries.

For example Rafa has amazing innate MA that allows her to function really well as a wizard, or in an more unorthodox secondary, draw out.

Truth
Draw Out
Blade Grasp
Short Charge / Magic Attack Up
Move +2 / Teleport

Whale Whisker / Staff of Zeus

Flash Hat / Thieves' Hat
Wizard Robe
Magic Gauntlet

Malak on the other hand has really powerful PA growth and can use it effectively in other jobs. I love making him a tanky geomancer that can rarely be hit and isn't effected by magic.

Elemental
Un-Truth
Blade Grasp / Abandon
Defense Up / Attack Up / Magic Attack Up
Move +3 / Teleport

Rune Blade
Escutcheon (II)
Thief Hat
Rubber Costume / Power Sleeve
Genji Gauntlets / Bracer

That's just some examples though, you would obviously fill in lesser equipment if you don't have the recommended equips above. They can be quite potent if you're willing to put the time into them, but, so is everything so I suppose the point is moot.

Fixed amount ranged healing with no variables or charge time. In a game with so much emphasis on range/distance and charging for abilities, that's quite useful. Yeah, you max out at healing with a 150 HP X-Potion, and yeah, your guaranteed resurrection will generally revive you with single-digit HP. But, doing that instantly and with no percentage of failure so long as your ally is in range? Priceless. Also, innate gun usage gives them a viable means of damage output. Which is necessary considering their stats aren't that great.

The fact that they have poor stats and lower grade equipment options is the only thing that makes them seem bad. Just like a normal Squire can still be used at endgame and still do decent damage if you really want to do it. Stats aren't great, but you can make up for it with equipment and creativity.

>So is it worth going through the last dungeon?
Aye, there's a tons of unique equipment in there, but you have to use Move-Find and land on the same tile in order to acquire it. Move-Find is inverse-Brave linked, so it's in your best interest to reduce Rafa's bravery to near-mutiny level before entering the dungeon, else you might receive the secondary quality item instead. Rolling a Brave check is the best item, and if you fail it you get something crappy like a Phoenix Down.

IMO you should complete the Darkest Dungeon at least once in your life, but FFT isn't exactly a difficult game when you know how to break it, so just once is probably enough. It's for the novelty factor really, since you can't see anything and the gameplay is very different as a result.

Very much different. It's in the tactical RPG genre, so the game plays out on a chessboard, like Fire Emblem or Shining Force. Except this is isometric, and it also has height levels, so positioning is pretty important.

If you flank an enemy you'll have a higher chance to hit because you ignore the evasion on his shield.

It has the mainstay themes of FF in general with chocobos, crystals, summons, and the job system (from FF3/5). However due to the director Yasumi Matsuno being a westaboo who went to university for international politics, the story is completely different in tone from the other Final Fantasies. It's more about medieval power politics, nobility vs. peasant caste system, feudalism, and so on since it's modeled very heavily on the Wars of the Roses (just like Game of Thrones)

help me design my party

I have ramza as a knight style character, wearing best armor and using best swords/shield

a ninja/monk

a whitemage/timemage

a blackmage/timemage

and a thief/mediator

The ninja/monk is set; he's gonna be great the whole time.
I don't know exactly what to do with ramza; I want him to be a knight with squire secondary, with hamedo reaction, probably two-hands vs wiegraf, otherwise using a shield. What would be best in the support slot besides two-hands?

I don't really need advice on my mages; mages automatically rock shit in this game. Kinda feels wrong to neglect most of the later classes, and I feel summons are too OP for me (despite using a ninja/monk with bladegrasp), but I kinda don't care with these guys.

What I really need help with is the thief/mediator. I want to have the ability to steal and poach, and I want somebody in the party who can use the magical guns without using a support slot. Would it be better to be a chemist in that case? Other than getting my brave/faith to where I want it to be, I don't think I need the mediator abilities; I don't intend to invite monsters to my party except to try some out for fun. But I don't know the mechanics well enough to optimize this. I know I need high speed for stealing, with concentrate, attack up, or martial arts. This is my get-the-shit-I-want character, who isn't terrible otherwise.

I find that Ramza's great MA growth allows him to be an effective Geomancer or Samurai as well. I feel like both skill sets are much stronger than Knight, but, that's up to you.

Two-hands is effective, as is attack up from Geomancer. You can also slap defense up or magic defense up as needed.

Another option for your reaction could be Abandon from Ninja which would greatly increase his evade adding to his tankiness. A last option would be something like regenerator which would give him automatic regen, which can come in handy.

I would say Chemist would be effective for your last slot. Item is extremely powerful and you can never have enough revival and healing on a team. Oracle can also be effective due to the various status effects you can put on enemies in conjunction with the ones you have on time mage. It can lead to a lot of combos, if you're willing to give up guns. Just make sure they have high faith regardless of what choice you make. Also when stealing, make sure to snag Martial Arts, since that will greatly increase your chances to steal items off of people.

Eh, your ramza is fine. I'd give him Attack Up or whatever it's called, if you aren't using two-hands.

For your thief/mediator; just don't try to be both at once. Be a ninja with steal, use secret hunt on wilderness maps and attack up or martial arts on story ones. You won't even find decent guns until halfway through chapter 4, and by then, you're already past all the best story battle steal opportunities (really, the only two that stick out are elmdore and the templar with the blaze gun/germinas peak chemists).

Once you've got the good shit, switch to being a chemist or mediator (mediator has slightly higher magic attack, but chemist is the better class option), take magic attack up, and wear element/MA boosting gear. You should be somewhat faster than normal due to having been a ninja for so long.

Can you try to put into words why that's the case? I'm interested in hearing about it.

That's really awesome, I love how that looks. Thanks for sharing!

Thinking about replaying it on an emulator with this patch:

https://www.romhacking.net/hacks/2119/

I never played War Of the Lions and it seems like this patch adds and fixes a few things so I might try it tomorrow.

Oh wow, I use to bug test this. It's okay, but, I don't know if I would recommend it as the first hack someone plays. If you want what I think the best hack out there right now is, try this one:

http://www.rpgdl.com/lft

That being said, Kind Of is okay. I wish there was PSP version of LFT, but, I don't think there is. They've also made their forums hidden recently, wonder what's up with that.

I was kinda disappointed by my first playthrough of WOTL. The script changes and FMVs were pretty neat but everything else they added was grindy in a bad way, much like the crafting system in the remake of TO:LUCT. Dark Knight is the most obvious one, with JP requirements for skills that are ridiculously high even compared to other "knight" classes (like Orlandu and Agrias).

Fuck grinding, give me balance.

You could just run an eboot of the PSX version.

The mod tools for WoTL are a lot less developed than the PSX version anyway

You're right. I know they at least did a version with the WotL script though, so I guess no big loss. There's just a few new battles, but, those are already succeeded by the various new randoms in LFT.

>>4107787
They arguably made balance even worse with Balthier as well, who is extremely broken, even without the game shattering Barrage ability.

Been playing Kind Of and I'm angry that goblins have rend weapon/armor, chakra was nerfed to a single cell and Yell is now a mana free Haste spell. Oh well, I'm not gonna stop playing it.
