Were the localizations of FF4 and 6 really that bad? All I ever see is people recommending the GBA versions or the fan translations.

4 yes, 6 no
GBA version is preferred for both tho (aside from the poor sound quality but I think there are mods for that)

4 is terribad. Woolsey was such a big deal for a damn good reason.

6 is not bad at all, especially if you see the circumstances in which it was done. GBA is liked for more than just text though (bugs out the ass, GBA still didn't fix them all), which is why people recommend that.

>> No.4459592

FF4's translation was just shit, like most JRPG translations were back then.

Woolsey's translations had flaws for sure, but they were pretty dang good considering the circumstances and standards of the time. That doesn't mean they can't be improved, though. I have no experience with the GBA translations, but I've heard they're fine.

Think this is a joke photoshop. That being said VII needs a touching up in certain spots. Namely Aeris, they butchered her personality in English, making her a childish airhead while she was mature and funny in Japanese.

Yeah, it's a quickly-thrown together "what if those shitty One Piece fansubbers translated FF7" joke that kinda fails to take into translation that the professional FF7 translation wasn't actually all that good and would've worked somewhat better had it used a game that actually WAS well translated.

Not having ebin memes doesn't make a translation soulless. The FFVI translation in particular is perfectly fine.

It has nothing to do with translation anyway. The only script differences between FF4 and FF4 Easy Type is that some words little kids might not know were swapped out for synonyms.

6's translation is fine. 4's was shit, and it wasn't even the full game in the USA anyway, it was a translation of the watered down ff4 "easy type" version.

When I was younger I enjoyed the US release off FF4 a lot, and I thought the translation was fun and quirky (spoony bard, etc.), but yeah it's kind of outrageous just how much stuff was changed and cut out. I really ought to play a fan-translated rom one of these days. Or should I play the PSX Final Fantasy Chronicles version?

Bruh. Did you even play the game?

I mean I'd peg her for a Gemini, which is an air sign, but she ain't no airhead.

>>4461020
desu he probably just doesn't understand how girls communicate. Aeris is pretty obviously the old cliche of "smart girl pretending to be stupid to get guy to like her." She's a cunning and manipulative narcissist, one tough cookie raised by the mean streets of Midgar, not an airhead and no one's bitch, and I know plenty of girls who have played FF7 and would agree with this assessment of her. If you're using words like "childish" or "naive" then the name you should be dropping is Cloud, not Aeris.

Remember that Cloud was basically a fucked-up manchild when he was dating Aeris. He was all messed up from the JENOVA experiments, from his experiences with Sephiroth, from having his childhood idol suddenly become his worst enemy in a single day, to the death of his best friend, and all of this happening to a guy who's basically still a teenager in terms of maturity. Yes, they're a cute couple, but it comes from a pretty dark place. I think Aeris did love Cloud, in her own way, and maybe it was the Planet's will that they met in the first place. But if she wasn't being hunted by the Turks I doubt she would have looked twice at him.

If you want to play the original, try FFIV - Namingway Edition.

For FFV, try the GBA script port.

For FFVI, try Relocalized or Ted Woosley Uncensored.

With FFIV it's not just a question of the translation, the game was massively changed when it was brought to the US. The US game was not, as some have said, easy-type though, it's something else entirely. Square was worried that because the US missed FFII and III players would be confused by a lot of the things added to the series over those two games, so they tried to "simplify" things. For instance instead of having a large number of items to cure individual status ailments (antidote for poison, eyedrops for blind, etc.), they removed all of those items and just made remedies, the items that cure all status ailments cheap and abundant. They also removed all of the items that could be used to cast spell-effects in battle. Some changes to the US game actually made things more difficult, for example removing Yang's self-buff abilities and Rosa's free healing spell. But healing items were also made much more abundant since they replaced most of the removed items in chests. Ultimately all they really accomplished was destroying the balance of the original because they thought Americans would be confused by all the new items and skills that weren't in the first FF.

FFIV easy-type still has all the items and skills that were in the original game. They just literally made it easier by weakening the monsters and strengthening the heroes.

It's got nothing to do with 'ebin memes' and everything to do with Japanese as a language. Literal translations (think Square Enix now) are boring as fuck to read because little attempt is made to make characters sound like real people. Woolsey understood this and sometimes wrote lines that were a little quirky, but his job was to make the cultural gap of the two languages as small as possible, so you can forget you're playing a translated work at all.

The amount of autistic people that enjoy RPGs made this kind of a fool's errand though, there's always going to be a crowd that just doesn't care whether the dialogue reads well or not. You can do a lot worse than those ports too, I don't think Final Fantasy Tactics was even translated by a human.

that's just not true. i read this often but it's just not true. their characterization in FF6 is absolutely perfectly fine, but it is more nuanced than the old SNES localizations so i'm assuming some people are just plain too dumb to appreciate it.

Pleb here, what parts of the Woolsey translation of FF6 are bad/inaccurate? I can understand the obligatory 90's NoA censorship but no one seems to go into detail about what makes the rest of it bad.

>> No.4466337

IMO the bad translation and copious amounts of poorly written swears give FFVII a kind of punkish feel to it, which benefits the game's vibe.

>>4466330
The only stand out to me is the Sabin introduction, since the original line is Terra remarking that Sabin could be mistaken for one of Vargas's bears.

Woolsey's line makes her say "a bodybuilder who strayed too far from his gym"-- which while cute and still playing across Sabin is a huge muscled oaf that isn't easily seen as Edgar's brother, bumbles almost immediately because Sabin then remarks if Edgar "think[s] a 'bear' like [him]" would be helpful on their adventure. It's a really obvious error since now Sabin is making a joke about being called a bear, when nobody called him a bear in the first place.

>>4466330
I think most of the dialogue choices are fine. I think most have a gripe with the unnecessary changes to item, weapon, summon, spell names. It just leads to inconsistency with the rest of the series. Ironically I am so used to the Woolsey name changes that I get confused when playing the game with the proper names.
