Left or right?

Composite for everything 4th gen and below. S-Video for 5th gen but with some Composite exceptions for some games that use a lot of dithering.

I've always used scart for everything, is this a burger only problem?

Scart is a Yurop thing, Murrica doesn't and didn't have it.

4th gen systems were not shipped with scart cables, there were adaptors that you could buy separately. I have one too.

I don't get why people here pretend that European Megadrives and Super Nintendos had those out of the box.

They were in France.

Even NES had standard RGB output in France (though it was derived from composite, strangely enough).

>> No.5173238

>>5173167
Not really strange to be honest.
The standard NES ppu only outputs composite.
Yes there were RGB ones but those were only used in the arcades, TVs with built-in Famicoms and the titler so i don't think there was a too big production line for those. Also the pallette of those is wonky and doesn't fit right for some colors.
In the end it probably was just the easier and cheaper solution to go for the standard ppu...

All arcade ports must be played in RGB to preserve the original artist's intentions.

They didn't have composite cables out of the box either. They all shipped with RF modulators.

Composite for everything retro since it's pretty much what I used in the 80s and 90s aside from RF, which is more cumbersome.

Nah, I'm not the anon/s who always post the dithering things.
I just came back to composite, I don't think it's too blurry (though that might depend on the TV), and don't have the issues you mention either.
RGB looks crispier but also soulless

It is. Why the fuck would you care for anything less than RGB? And the answer is easy, the burgers didn't have it.

Is is possible to use ntsc Sega genesis with pal crt TV and composite cable? Or is RGB the only way?

>> No.5175306

>>5175018
It is. The results will vary. If you're a poor african with a 50 year old TV it might not support NTSC. If you're a poor brit who doesn't already know the answer you might break the console and/or cable trying to fit the av connector in a controller port.

The SNES did in the UK. I remember opening the box on christmas morning, fitting the plug to the end of the PSU (because you only got bare wires in the UK back then and a 9 year old was expected to know how to perform this essential task) and wondering what this strange 3 pronged cable was for. But the RF was built in on the SNES and the cable for that was also included so I just used that and forgot about it until years later and I saw funny yellow, red and white inputs on my rich friend's TV.

I concur. I bought RGB cables for everything that can, those YPbPr cables from those crazy aussies, an OSSC, a RetroTink for the SVideo only stuff and more besides. But on days when I can't be bothered rigging everything up correctly, composite is the comfortable pair of slippers that are always warmed by the heater and ready to go.

>> No.5175791

>>5175018

Sony, toshiba, panasonic pal TV's will display NTSC properly. Most others will do the 60hz, but will fail to display colours. So you will end up with an NTSC black & white picture on cheapo euro TV's.

>> No.5175851

Except that we did. Arcade games used analog RGB, of course. CGA, EGA, and VGA are all analog RGB standards. If you had a Commodore 1084,2002, etc. monitor or NEC Multisync, you could easily build a cable for your console of choice. Some people even sold them on Usenet.

CGA and EGA were digital RGB, not analog.

Composite artifacts add character to the image and is comfy. The fact it's how the vast majority of people saw the game back in the day adds authenticity, as well.

No /vr/ console ever came with component (unless you're counting RGB, but I doubt that)

>> No.5177214

I like RF and composite for old systems, RGB looks good too if it's earlier 3D consoles.
It also depends on the system. The Dreamcast has great RF, much better than the atrocious N64 composite.
