Just got dumped. Need some suggestions for good 4x vr games to sink my time into over xmas. I loved Master of Orion 2. Have put together a list of 4x games i haven't really played before and could do with recommendations of which are best, where to get them, what mods etc to use. Really need your help guys I feel fucking bummed out.

My list:

Alpha centauri
Master of magic
Master of orion 1
Age of wonders
Heroes of might and magic 3 (is this even 4x?)

master of magic is awesome. Dunno about mods but my recollection is that the patched version fixes some major issues with balance (like Paladins being immune to almost everything)

Emperor of The Fading Suns
people still mod it to this day and there is a somewhat active steam group for PbE

If it weren't so buggy, it would be the perfect sci-fi 4x, way better than the MOOs. Shame it doesn't really work; I think the core design is awesome, much more tense and actually strategic instead of faux-strategic and highly tactical.

idk if galactic civlizations counts as 4x but it's a really fun turn based strategy game. I poured countless hours into it as a young teenager.

same anon here, I forgot to mention imperium galactica and the sequel. both are pretty fun games with a unique system.

Remake is pretty similar to the original game. You still have the very basic colony setups, you still have the unique race tech trees and colonization requirements, you still have decent but not perfect race balancing, the inability to spot incoming fleets, and the consequential optimized strategy of constantly attacking your enemy while he does the same to you.

It is also horribly buggy as well. I actually do play it more often than the original original, but I have to admit I don't do much play anymore.

I just bought this on GoG and installed the unofficial 1.5 patch. Game runs really slow though, like 5 seconds between turns. Not sure what's wrong.

Try pressing Ctrl+F12 a few times to speed up DOSBox and see if that helps.

Thanks. I read about this. I'm at 50k cycles and that seems to be the optimal for my machine but the next turn eggtimer still is several seconds. I suspect it will only get worse as the game progresses. How bizarre.

Dominions 5 is kind of 4xish but not exactly. If you like Master of Magic if could appeal. Also very deep and lots to learn. Worth a shot, check out the thread on /vg/.

1.31 was the last official patch. 1.4 and 1.5 are two separate fanmade patches, with 1.5 being itself a bugfix for things accidentally broken by making 1.4. They really are quite an improvement to the base game, IMO.

I only recently started Master of Magic and I'm totally enamored by it. I've played AoW and HoMM 3 before it, and MoM is leagues ahead of them, there's just so much variety and so many ways you can play the game.

AoW is nice, but the selection of magic in it is weak and doesn't allow for nearly as much experimentation and discovery of various playstyles as MoM. In AoW1, you can't found new settlements and have to rely on subjugating existing ones. In AoW2/SM, you can, but the AI can't.

HoMM 3 is especially weak in terms of strategic variety -- the only variance in strategy in the game is in how you can most efficiently pump up one fat stack of troops and keep it replenished. Like AoW1, settlements are fixed.

As for MoM's various versions and patches, I've been playing 1.31 alongside the Caster of Magic mod.

I'm skeptical about 1.5 because it's just a backport of the enhancements made in CoM minus most of the gameplay changes, and the developer himself doesn't play test 1.5 because his primary concern is the CoM mod. I've read complaints about the AI being too strong in 1.5 because the many AI shortcomings were fixed but the resource bonuses given to them are still the same as for vanilla.

Caster of Magic is a bit different from the vanilla game but it's really well-made. The dev has a good mindset of striving to make all the different options meaningful and powerful. Also, the early game is faster paced because of the higher population growth and each race has less restrictions on what they can build.

I really dislike how the AI builds so quickly on the higher difficulties that the only real strategy is to take over neutral and their towns instead of building your own in those mods.

I'm playing on normal and it already seems a bit too challenging. I want a relaxed game but easy difficulty is too simple (no tough neutral cities, safe retreats). I would like it if the dev reduced AI bonuses from normal and up. There isn't a difficulty level in the mod where the AI handicap/bonus is at 100% (i.e. no bonus). In easy, AI production and power are handicapped at 75%. In normal, they get a bonus of 110% and 120% respectively, they only need to pay 80% mana for casting spells and their upkeep is only 60%. I would like a mode where they get no bonuses at all and all the gameplay mechanics are turned on.
