Is this the best controller ever made? Why doesn't anyone ape the microswitched digital thumb pad? I've been using it (mostly for shmups and some platformers) and I don't think I could ever go back to a traditional dpad

>> No.5218540

Those things have too much range of motion.

Now one thing I would like to see is a microswitch d-pad. I think that ought to be possible.

Hm...

Maybe. They don't really feel like a microswitch button but they do have a certain "click" to them.

I'd be surprised if anyone could do attacks like these on something with such a wide range of motion.

ps2 have exactly the same mechanism, the only difference being the microswitches are in a more standard form factor, unlike NeoCD ones.

this pad actually used µswitches for the dpad.
it used the ones for mouse buttons

It's just retards thinking 6 face buttons are better because "muh arcades". In reality, it's shit because you're only using your thumb, instead of your index, middle, and ring fingers.

I like 6 face buttons because it allows me to access more buttons with my right hand.

6-button fighting games are always better with all 6 laid out in two rows. And yes, depending on the game, it is viable to use your fingers instead of thumb.

I like it for arcades l. You can use 2-3 fingers easily. On a controller my thumb is not fast enough to jump between bottom left to top right. You have to use a weird grip to make use of all the buttons.

>You have to use a weird grip to make use of all the buttons.
I just place my thumb across the middle buttons so I can easily access the left or right buttons as well. I don't pick up my thumb and place it all the way on top of the other buttons, either, I mainly rock my thumb to the sides or half-move it so I can reset back to neutral position most easily. Pic related is how I place my thumb, it's centered on top of the Y and B buttons there and you can see how it's already overlapping onto the other buttons which makes pressing them with the side of my thumb pretty easy.

Not to mention that most 6-button games don't use every button evenly all the time. A good example is Street Fighter: You're mainly using the center and left buttons for your medium and light attacks, and the heavy attacks on the right are used more sparingly and situationally so you're not constantly going between pressing light and hard all the time or anything.

I think the XBOne Elite controller has micro switches for it's pad. It comes with drop in pad styles to hit them from the traditional cross shaped to a more rounded style.

Also SCUF has a new PS4 controller that has an Xbox like layout for the sticks...I think it has switches too for it's dpad

I remember playing Herc's Adventures on the Saturn and run was bottom left and jump was top right or something. It was a pain to run and jump from A to pressing Z, I did just hold my thumb over A and use the side of my index finger to press Z and C, but it is not comfortable for extended periods of time.

To play 64 and Saturn games? You have no hope of emuating those systems properly, so you should be playing them on actual hardware. OP and the Hori fight commander are the perfect catch-all for all pre-analog layouts.
