HYDLIDE. Sounds so wretched and foul. Maybe it's pronounced Hydlide, but who knows? AND WHO EVEN KNOWS WHAT THE FUCK IT MEANS?

The game came out on JPCs before it was on the Famicom. It looks like a weird mix of Dragon Quest and Tower of Druaga and since it's only a 40k single bank game, it's fairly simple and there isn't a whole lot to it. Also the single tune that plays throught the entire game is annoying.

>> No.5304748

My guess was they brought this three year old and outdated game to the US in 89 to compete with DQ1, although unlike the latter no attempt was made to update or enhance the audiovisuals.

>> No.5304778

>>5304748
I know about the other enhancements to Dragon Warrior, but I'm not aware of any audio changes in the localization.

>> No.5304801

>>5304778
Ok I'm exaggerating a little. The sound wasn't touched. The original 1986 release was 64k in size and used a CNROM (meaning you can switch around the CHR ROM in 8k blocks but the PRG ROM is fixed) and saves were password (also really fucking long).

When they localized DQ1 for North America, the game was bumped to 80k and an MMC1 mapper+battery save. The overworld graphics were touched up a bit and sprites could face in more than one direction. What's curious is that the US version has a 64k PRG ROM but the CHR ROM was actually shrunk to 16k. This is despite the added sprite patterns and more space-consuming English dialog.

>> No.5304818

>>5304801
Disassemby of Japanese DQ1 reveals that actually most of the CHR ROM is level data rather than graphics, which occupy only 12k out of a 32k ROM. The game reads the level data during the VBLANK and then swaps the CHR data back in. The US conversion moves most of the level data into the PRG and has an expanded CHR to fit the added sprites. Along with of course an SRAM for game saving.

Neat, huh?

>> No.5304832

>and more space-consuming English dialog

The perennial curse of console RPGs pre-PS1. A single katakana is equal to two letters in the Latin alphabet so many RPGs either had shortened/simplified English dialog or in the case of stuff like FF3 and Mother 2, they just didn't bother with a US release at all.

Of course they did complete a US localization of Earthbound 2, it was just never released because Nintendo decided the cost wasn't worth it. Mother 2 was already 384k and I think the US ROM would have been something like 512k.

As for the rest, US DQ2 is 2x the size of Japanese DQ2. The graphics are identical but the US version adds an extended intro sequence. A lot of the ROM isn't used though. Also Japanese DQ2 is password save just like the first game and the passwords are unfathomably long.

DQ3 has battery saving in both the Japanese and US versions. Again the US version has a lengthy intro sequence not in the Japanese. It also fixed a sound glitch with the game music.

DQ4 doesn't differ that much and both versions have a single 1MB PRG ROM (there's no CHR ROM). The Japanese does have a slightly different/better intro sequence.

The Famicom had only 2k of WRAM. Nintendo have always been notoriously cheap with RAM. For example, the GBA was originally to have 32k of WRAM but when they learned that the PSP would have 32MB, they bumped it up to 256k.

>> No.5304960

The GBA is quite a lot of fun to program and it really was the last oldskool 2D ROM cartridge-based game system. When they went to the DS, the cartridges used flash ROMs and the DS actually works by having RAM that it loads the cartridge ROM data into, it's not like the traditional setup where the ROM directly maps into the CPU address space.

The original Gameboy was rapidly aging technology by the mid-90s and developers began demanding an improved handheld. I owned it as a kid, but compared to Zelda it was unapproachable. The world seemed more confusing due to the way it wraps around on itself, and as simplistic as it was, it took me a very long time to really understand combat having "modes". The magic really just doesn't get useful since the spells are both awkward to use and they don't reward experience when they connect, and it's linearity with how you approach that sprawling world with almost no clues to progress really felt unwelcoming. I'd put it in, grind for a bit, but never felt motivated enough to actually write down a password because I never felt I was making progress.
