This isn't even bait. It's been like 15 years of hearing this is the pinnacle of difficulty in classic gaming and I beat it on my second try. Are people bad at this game or just plain retarded? Holy shit.

We looked into it and came to the sneaking suspicion that because Rare were a PAL region developer, they coded the game around 50Hz and didn't bother testing it on NTSC NESes or monitors, because a quick playthrough of the European release of Battletoads finds that the more murderous parts like Clinger Winger and Rat Race become much easier.

That post just gave me a stroke. Because the reaction times on a CRT are 10 to 40ms faster than LCD screens, which aren't usually that noticeable but in games that require lightning fast reflexes made for CRT screen it adds up. Although modern LED screens now have "game mode" that lowers that down a bit closer to CRT speeds. It just has to do with the tech in the flatscreens having to redraw the entire screen and buffer it to look pretty while CRTs would just barf the light on the glass indiscriminately.

>> No.5375386

>>5375162
It's not even a particularly hard level once you understand it's basically all up and down. Just follow the pattern. There are a few seconds that are deliberately out of pattern though but after a few tries you'll know when it happens. The only thing that really fucks you over is the island jumps because the perspective in this game is really fucked up.

>> No.5375396

>>5375345
A good test is to boot up SMB. When Mario gets hit by an enemy, he flickers. On many HDTVs, you don't get any flicker because they can't update the screen fast enough. If you set game mode and he flickers properly, it's doing what it's supposed to.

Nah, you are fine, this is unironically one of the easiest and most consistent stages in the game.

I think there are plenty of people who do struggle with it, but I had a similar experience to yours when I first started playing. For my money "Volkmire's Inferno" is the toughest level in the game, but most of the post-turbo tunnel stages are more difficult than the turbo tunnel.

>> No.5378617

Everyone is different OP and this game is definitely a lot harder as a kid. If it wasn't for the final checkpoint I'd probably agree with you. I just can't seem to consistently beat it but I usually do only dying once or twice.

I decided to finally beat this game because it had been haunting me my whole life and I can finally beat the game every time I try. I actually find the snake pit to be the hardest level. It's just too easy to fuck up the jumps. I find Clinger Winger easy as hell though and I pretty much never die on it.

>> No.5378798

The entirety of Battletoads is, and I'm serious, easy. Everything is either memorization or reflex based. If you've got good reflexes and the patience to memorize layouts, you'll easily one-shot every level. I think the reason people think it's so hard is because they expect to be able to do everything in one run like most other games and when they get a game over they just give up rather than going back and finding that whatever parts they died to are now easy to avoid.

>> No.5378840

The thing is when most people, including people that frequent a retro video game message board, consider it difficult then the game IS difficult. Most people can't beat it for a good reason. If Battletoads isn't difficult you might as well consider every fucking game easy. This is coming from someone who has beaten the game over 5 times this year alone.

Will yeah but even Battletoads arcade has a few sneaky ways of fucking you over intentionally, like the laser gun doing no real damage until the last shot, making Rash really bad with it because his burst fire is so long that it triggers counter attacks by big guys before they take damage. Or how Karnath is invulnerable for the first couple minutes of the fight.

I wanted the game as a kid, because I thought that it would be like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. But I blame the bastard reviewers of my country's Nintendo magazine. The review said that it was much better than Turtles games, and that now Turtles is stuff for pussies, babies and faggots and you should play Battletoads instead. Gamestore on my town had Tmnt 2 and Battletoads, and dad would buy me one of them, that I wanted. So instead of getting a full beat em up game, I got that shareware nes game with 2 and half playable levels, because the review had brainwashed me completely. We had no internet, so these bad reviews were only source of information about games.
