Not retro but Amnesia's sanity mechanic literally does nothing except trigger graphical effects and make you black out for a few seconds if it gets too low - but the game tells you it does all sorts of shit. Pretty clever actually, it lets players scare themselves more than actual mechanics ever could

Sound test often had full soundtracks didn't they? You could listen or if you had the right (rudimentary) equipment legally record it to another device. Even for the instant effects it could be interesting and fun to hear them when you're not in the heat of the moment as some effects only came out in. Things sometimes sounded a lot different in the sound test. It didn't cost anything to put in the effects, if you enjoyed going through them once ever it was worth them being there.
