When did we stop calling them paddles and start calling them controllers? Paddle is one less syllable and rolls off the tongue effortlessly. Everyone called them paddles in the 80's-90's. What the fuck changed?

How about the manual or on the back of the box that called it a controller? The Atari 2600 had additional dial controllers they called paddles for games like breakout but the main controller was called a joystick. OP is retarded

>> No.6059113

It was only called a paddle during the 1st and 2nd gens, because the dial-based controller was well known and was used to control the Pong's virtual paddle. Any further mention is likely a Gen Xer stuck in their ways; Nintendo made it a point to name their shit specifically to avoid genericization.

This. Basically until the NES there were joysticks and there were paddles and that was pretty much it. Cokecovision and Intellivisions controllers were actually confusing to people in that they were shaped like paddles but controlled like joysticks. Nintendo standardizing the cross d-pad was the point where random people instantly grasped what they were looking at and so there was need for a new term, "controller" or as my older son hilariously called them until he was about 4 and a half, 'trollers.

Like, he just got triggered yesterday from me posting in a thread about what retro characters people masturbated to talking about having sex with actual girls in the 90s, the kind of stories normal people and people who aspire to be normal usually enjoy. He actually got me some kind of shadow ban this morning where it just acted like captchas weren't working. Lame. It's actually pretty funny to observe the way the moderation is attempting to control a chan, which is designed from the bottom up to be uncontrollable. Apparently the "new" flavor that's supposed to be marketable is to only be politically incorrect ironically but despite unironically towing the leftist pussy line still being a socially isolated loser. Talk about the worst of both worlds. Happily all one needs do is have an easily flexible IP from too big a range to ban without hurting traffic and resist the urge to trip up. Fortunately I'm enough of an egotist to believe my writing style alone is plenty recognizable.

I'm the 27 year old, started with an NES and that's what we had for many years, got a Gameboy Pocket at one point at a trip, my brother saved up to buy his own Gameboy before me.
In retrospect it's probably because my dad is a massive cheapskate.

We gamed some on PCs too, though going from seeing Megaman and Duck Hunt on your TV to Super Mario 64 and Goldeneye 64 was a remarkable leap to me at the time.

It sounds like you're looking to brag to nerds about your sexlife (and I see you do it constantly around here), which is extremely funny. Are you fishing for validation from virgins?

This rings a bell. I definitely remember those knobby ones being called paddles. Some people might have called other things paddles by association, but that definitely died out like 35 years ago in most places.
