No seriously, why was this put in the game?

Because it looked cool you stupid zoomer.

It's funny, I watched an interesting video on Cracked stating that the Sonic series is set in a world where robotnik has not only already won, but has taken over everything already. This includes the worlds and zones.

These were prebuilt to keep Sonic, one of the few characters who could over throw Eggman, at bay in their own world. This is noticeable in the textures and lands that have swirls randomly or in worlds made out of pinball machines and lands seemingly like Pompeii. Even the Ring Zones are induced trips to make Sonic feel like he is accomplishing something as oppose to completing anything. This would explain how he moves from a forest to a burning ancient land, to a techno world instantly. These are built around him.

Keeping that in mind, it seems the words "COPE" could be the creator making a subliminal message to the character of Sonic. "This is your world. Deal with it."

Most likely the level designer was a big fan of The Teardrop Explodes

It goes both ways. These days Julian dresses like Ash from Bare Knuckle III

It was an acronym for the co-processor. CPU is visible too.

Clearly not the case if you actually play the games. It's more likely that the 30-something failure at Cracked who wrote that article assumed the games were in the same world as the SatAM cartoon, where Robotnik had pretty much already won (which was a frequent talking point in many, clickbaity "TEN THINGS ABOUT THE OLD SONIC CARTOON THAT YOU WON'T BELEIVE" articles over the past two decades) and decided to pull some more shit out of his ass inspired by that.

Honestly, the actual reason is probably just that Japan loves using English words as a way to sound cool, and Sonic in particular was seen as a very America-inspired character, and his personality was all about perservering and getting shit done, so it's not really odd for pseudo-deep, inspirational words like "COPE" to be plastered in random places just for eye candy.

According to the official US manual, Aquatic Ruins Zone is roamed by romans. So either the Sonic games are set in the real world, or Sonic's worlds had its own romans.

Green Hills are the coastal part of South Island's mountain range that leads up to the island's semi-active volcano, upon which sits the ruins of a previous civilization. On the other side of the mountains is a modern city. The modern city still uses the labyrinthine sewer system of the previous civilization. Sonic goes through those to get back into the city, near its outskirts; closer to Robotnik's industrial conplex on the island. Going though the outskirts leads you to Robotnik's headquarters (which also use the sewer system).

Not that hard to figure out, really. Sonic lives on an island that has a city on one side of it and unspoiled wilderness on the other. Which is already implied in the GG/Master System game.

I can buy Eggman having taken over (or at least well on his way to doing so), since his robots are everywhere and he already has massive factories and the like, but not the whole worlds built around Sonic and hallucination thing.

One of the lead designers/director would actually go around and get everyone on the team to add superfluous features to the levels, so that instead of just running on the track and challenging the level design of the developer you could build up speed on the long halfpipe or bounce around on bumpers in the sky to find some inscrutable message/display or cache of bonus items.

"Cope" is the idea I gave to one of the exasperated devs across the collective subconscious outside of normal temporal causal reality, the only reason I gave him that idea is because I had played the game and seen it. "Cope" because the laws of cause and effect are not bound by a linear temporal model, and we just have to deal with that. Some times shit comes from literally seemingly nowhere, like if the random snowdrops on signal-less CRT were forming English words for "no reason". This is the character of a world where god chose to meddle with his creation and entrust sentient beings with a fragment of infinity in the probability mechanics of their brain.

If real life were a videogame, it's one where god used a cheat code or added save states to make it more interesting.

It's not that special, seemingly magical and paranormal things don't happen, it's just that we never reached our full potential and became oppressed by the archons of our age. Cope.

And so why did Eggbotnik leave all the rings and monitors around?

Why doesn't he already have the Master Emerald and Chaos Emeralds, if he'd designed Hidden Palace Zone and the Special Stages?

Why did he keep putting Sonic and Tails' names and faces in the Casino zones?

I'm genuinely curious to see how Eggbotnik's madness works
