Which Final Fantasy games have you played? And if possible, what order?

I'm asking because I'm so fucking bent on getting into Final Fantasy and I want to start with the first game, the NES version, which I didn't even enjoy last time I played it. I'm such a purist faggot that it bothers me

>> No.623779

I liked the simplicity of the first one. Why do so many people hate it? The second is the one I think completely sucks (that leveling system...)

>> No.623821

The first one I played was X. my brother borrowed it from a friend and I figured why not give it a try? Before then I could never really get into those kind of games, was more into Goldeneye and simple games like that.
God damn, Final Fantasy X really opened my eyes to the whole series. Next thing I knew I was playing and enjoying the crap out of nearly all the Final Fantasy games I had.
VI is my favourite, by far.

ive played, in this order:

FF1
FF7
FF8 - never finished
FF9
FF6 (the popular one...3 in US) - never finished
FF2 - never finished
FF5 - never finished
FF4 - never finished

FF1 & 2 aren't really worth it unless, like you say, you are "purist".

IMO the PS1 entries were the best, but I never played 10 and onward, they started to look way too weaboo-esque to me.

FF6 seems to me the most widely praised of the series but ive never been able to finish it, ive always preferred chrono trigger/earthbound/other SNES RPGs.

Final Fantasy 1 and 2:

If you are a purist and like wasting your time, play the NES version.

If you just want to play it and you want it to be easy, play GBA.

If you like the features of the GBA version but you want it to have the NES difficulty: play the PS1 version.

If you like the features of the GBA version, but you want it to have the NES difficulty, and you want it to be handheld: buy a Wonderswan color, learn Japanese, and play the Wonderswan Color Final Fantasy 1&2 version.

FF10-2
FF12

Between 9 and 10 there's a gap of several years, since I didn't have a PS2 or a computer that could emulate it.

I enjoyed them all, though the PS era ones have some flaws that I could easily forgive... in the classic era.
As cliche as Cecil's story is in FF4, I still find it better than FFX's. At least it was more consistent.
Same goes for FF8, a mess of a story that only gets more convoluted as the game proceeds.
FF12's is a damn shame, because I was kinda liking the story (despite the irrelevant forced main character), but then the game just kinda... ends. It could have easily used 5 or 10 more hours of story. Pity.

System-wise I bow to FF3 and FF5's job systems. Customization AND completion bonus? I'm in!

FF2? The horror. The horror. It's not a... terrible idea, but it was far better implemented in SaGa games. Far better.

FF1 has the flaws of a very early game, so I'm bound to cut it some slack. The most annoying thing in it by far is characters hitting the air when they take their turn after an enemy was killed.

FF6 is just pretty. Graphics and music, variety of characters with plenty of personality. Love it.

FF7 (pc)- beat it
FF4 (ps1 AKA HARD VERSION)- beat it
FF9 (ps1)- beat it
FF1 (gba) - beat it
FF6 (rom)- beat it
FF10 (ps2)- beat it
FF3 (ds)- beat it
FF2 (gba)- beat it
FF5 (ps1)- beat it
FF8 (ps1)- *cough*currently playing*cough* (got to the timed action sequence before disc 3, flipped table and raged, havn't played it in nearly 1yr)

I own all the main series in one form or another, though I only got 3 fairly recently for iOS.

I played them in this order: 6,4,5,7,8,9,10,1,2,3

I haven't beaten 2 or 9, though. 2 isn't fun at all, and I can't be bothered to load up 9 and finish the very end, I just didn't care for it. In my opinion, 8-10 are worth playing, but not more than once. I haven't beaten 8 or 10 since about 2002, but I replay 4,6, and 7 every couple years.

Been a fan of the series since about 1999, when I first played FF6 on emulator. I then dusted off my SNES, and bought 4 and 6 (2 and 3) for it, and picked up 7 for PC. I lost interest after X, since it was the last decent release, but I still replay the good ones.

FF1 - Origins (PS1)
FF2 - Origins (PS1)
FF3 - iOS (Ipod touch)
FF4 - SNES, PS1, GBA, PSP
FF5 - PS1, GBA
FF6 - SNES, GBA, PS1
FF7 - PS1, PC
FF8 - PS1
FF9 - PS1
FFX - PS2

First game I actually beat without help was V (I played a bit of VI on SNES as a kid, and had help with VII at around 9), and so far it has held up as my favorite.

From there, I ended up going around to VII, IX, X, VI, IV, III and I.

I played VIII for a while, but eventually got tired of Squall and Siefer's shit. I'll probably try and give it another go someday though.

I played II up until I figured how how the game worked, and abandoned ship; fuuuuuuuuuuuck that.

As for the rest: X-2 is Final Fantasy: SPICE Edition, so take that as you will. XII I could probably stand to revisit; I don't remember much about it except Vaan is a faggot. XIII's battle system gets a lot of flak, but I thought it was kind of interesting. That said, its environments amounting to pretty hallways and lack of an interesting cast or plot (in the relative sense ofc; not saying any particular FF is absolute gold or anything) ruined what little potential it had.

It's fun playing FF1 on the NES again with starting at level 50, and seeing how enemies progress from harmless to genuine threats

FF12->FF1->FF2->FF5->FF6
Didnt get very far into 6 before I quit. I dont like any of the ff's I played and after trying to play 6 I feel pretty much done with the entire series.

>FFVIII being the worst Final Fantasy

That's not even close. If anything, it's one of the best.

>> No.626213

1, 2, 7, 10, 8, 6, 5, 9, 4, 3, 12.

There's no shame in starting on PS1's FF1, OP. It's the best version of the game and is faithful to the original release; the only major change is that item stocking has been improved a bit.

Also the atmosphere in the remake is awesome compared to the original. It might help you appreciate the NES version more sometime later if you start there.

I don't think that's a ranking, but actually the order in which he played them.
Note that he puts a regrettably next to XIII.

VIII is a great game though. In fact, I think VI-IX are the best in the series.

>one of the best
>major part of plot is two dudes resolving to cut each other rather than themselves
>roster is female sextropes, emoslash, and MOTHERFUCKING ZELL (who alone does not make up for the bullshit)
>here's the REAL final boss syndrome ala IV (forreal, fuck that game cheating you out of a proper fight with Golbez)
>that fucking card game

I wouldn't call it the worst by any means, but I wouldn't call it 'one of the best' either.

>> No.626296

If I remember well I played them in that order :

7 > 8 > 9 > 10 > 4 > 5 > 6 > 12 > 3 > 1 > 2

My order of preference :

6 > 9 > 7 > 8 > 4 > 5 > 10 > 12 > 3 > 1 > 2

I hate the first 3, really didn't age well, no story, hard as fuck, always lost. Even the 4 is a pain in the ass with its fuckin' difficulty (particularly at the end) but the story and the atb save all.

In order of play, 7, 8, 1, 10, 2, 6, 5, 4, 3, 9, 12.

Never actually completed 5, 6, 3, or 12, yet. Have a copy of 13, haven't even started it yet.

I played them in this order:
>Final Fantasy VII
>Final Fantasy IV
>Final Fantasy VIII
>Final Fantasy I
>Final Fantasy II
>Final Fantasy XII
>Final Fantasy III
>Final Fantasy VI
>Final Fantasy V
I never completed VI or VII. I didn't like VIII at all. I thought II, IV, and V to be alright.

Played 1 through X-2, Tactics and the Advanced Ones(not sure if those count here). Beat 1, 7, Tactics Advanced and X-2 (how the fuck did i not beat X, shit) Played dawn of souls for 1 just cause of the streamlined interface versus old. Still love it. Don't feel like buying any more but i might borrow 13. Favorite is still 10 and 10 2, whatever hate they have, loved the chars and world.

>playing FF1

Jesus fuck help me, the game is so boring it hurts. Combat is devoid on any semblance of excitement or fun at all.

I just entered Earth Cave and this is literally "buy tons of Heal, the game".

It's not even difficult, its just so tedious it hurts.

Mystic Quest>4>1>2>3>10>8>7>9>12>11>13

FF1 is actually really fun, I love the capacity to decide my party composition from the get-go. The lack of any interesting story is annoying in retrospect, but I can still enjoy the game regardless. It's not everyone's cup of tea, though.

3 (original, DS remake), 5, 6, and 7. Not really a fan of the newer animu CG ones. They look weird.
Also Chocobo's Dungeon was surprisingly a really great game on the Wii.

FFI on the PSP, FFII about halfway on the PSP before I dropped it, some of FF7, finished FF12.
I'm working on FF3 on the PSP now. Maybe I should have played the originals and not the remakes but fuck me FF1/2 PSP remakes are beautiful.

>but fuck me FF1/2 PSP remakes are beautiful.

but we already established they are really ugly since they look as if they were cheaply made with RPGmaker or something.

for me it was like this. the more crisp the character models and those of the enemies, the uglier the games have become.

I think the PS1 versions look best because of that.

I have a mess of a play but thats the real order, started to play them when i was 16 and now i am 28 and still replay them from time to time, the only ones i have original copies are VI,Tactics and the ps2 ones

VI > V > Tactics > VIII > IX > I (origins) > II (GBA) > VII > Tactics Adv > XII > X > X-2 > IV (GBA) > Tactics Adv 2

>> No.632589

just play the original
if your goal is to play FF1 then play that one because that's FF1
if you'd rather play a newer game then play something that came out this year
it doesn't make much sense to mix old and new when your specific purpose is to experience something that is basically old

likewise, if your goal is to see the Eiffel Tower then yeah you can go to the one in Las Vegas
but
that's kinda dumb

if you don't like the original NES version of FF1, there are about 500 other versions that are "more playable"

they just cut enough to make things slightly worse for no reason

I played them in this order:

1, 7, 4, 5, 10

I could not get into 6.

I'm a big 7fag, but I also really enjoyed 4 and 5. It's not necessary to play 1, unless you want to see where it all began. I played 1 on the NES when it first came out, so I had no choice.

*shrug*

it gets harder as you get older because you get better at games and better at appreciating and understanding stories, while they keep on being aimed at kids who are bad at all of that

I played FF1 as a kid and was utterly amazed by its awesomeness; now every one of these games (including Tactics) puts me to sleep because it's so easy and the storytelling is so weak

one day somebody will make a big, highly polished JRPG for adults that's actually hard to win and that people could have recommended to Roger Ebert when he said games weren't art without embarrassing themselves

it'll probably be a long time though

>> No.632695

Nobody has figured out how properly to integrate gameplay (the game element) into narrative and visuals (the art element). Many have tried, but all have failed--especially tryhard indie devs.

I love art--books, movies, music, etc. When I play a game, I want to play a game. The less distracting the storytelling, the better.

What I mean by that is that bad games (in my opinion) try too hard to be "deep," and the "story" gets in the way of playing the game. Good games have a story that is enough to keep you playing, but not shoved down your throat, and focus mainly on fun gameplay.

This is actually probably why I never got into FF6.

FF1, FF2, FF4, FF5, FF6, FF7, FF9, FF10, FF10-2, FF11, FF12, FF Tactics, FF Tactics Advance and FF Tactics Advance 2. Final Fantasy as with most RPG's it requires lots of time consuming grinding, Don't even bother if you don't feel like grinding.
