Emulator poorfag here. If you could only have 2 controllers to play retro games from the beginning to maybe gamecube at the latest, with the goal of having non-cancer playability on the most games possible, which ones would they be?

Hard mode: I like sega and also arcade games which struggle on conventional button layouts

Saturn+Dualshock 4 is probably the most versatile combo. Saturn is good for arcade and fighting games and probably the most face buttons you'll ever want. And DS5 has all the inputs you'd use for 3d games plus a touchpad that you could probably come up with a use for, plus a gyro that could have some potential applications for games that use motion or light gun and driving wheel stuff. The only stuff that would be completely lost is pressure sensitive face buttons, but those were retarded anyway, and arcade games with ridiculously in depth controls like mahjong and those gundam pods, but if you enjoy those you provably probably don't like video games or fun so thought exercises like this are worthless

The problem with the PS controllers is the shitty D pad that makes fighting games and other control heavy games a pain in the ass

This controller is pretty good, no analog is a hinderence though for some 3d games, and I had mine about 6 years or so, and this year one of the surface buttons has gone soft, still works, but it's gone soft

nah i just want 1 or 2 controllers that will work for most games then i can buy the original controllers for each console i find that i play enough as i go. i sold all my retro consoles and most of my games when the retro gaming thing started getting popular but now i'm enjoying it again. i'd rather not waste money that could go into other hobbies like /o/ and /k/

thanks, i actually found a bunch of ps2 dual shocks in my garage. i think i'll get a sega 6 button and then worry about fighting games next.

the newer, officially licensed retro-bit genesis controllers are pretty good, especially for the price.
i recommend the 8-button for max compatibility (SNES needs L+R, although using the cheaper (by like US$5) 6-button that i have works just fine, its just a little confusing before you get used to it). it comes in USB and bluetooth, *and* the 2.4 GHz wireless which works with real hardware using the genesis controller port dongle it comes with (should you ever get a real console) as well as PC/everthing else the others support

for anything needing analogue, i say either dualshock 2 (if its cheap enough, and make sure you get an adapter that supports the analogue buttons and triggers, not just the analogue sticks), or, if you're supreme segafag, get the retrobit saturn controller with added analogue sticks and 4 shoulder buttons once those come out. no idea how comfortable that'll be, but it looks like theyve made the right adjustments (making it thicker and adding a handle like shape, really) to make it easy to hold, pic related

8bitdo's shit looks pretty good as well though; ive never tried them because i stick with cheap and wired

Agreed. That floating d-pad is so much better than a standard crosshair d-pad. Great for fighting games, shmups, platformers, just everything really. Try to make a circle on a floating pad vs a crosshair pad. The floating pad is way smoother like a joystick but it can also be tapped and give precise inputs. It's by far my favorite for shmups and retro.

Get an 8-bitdo controller with analogue sticks. They are well designed and even work with nintendo switch. I have one of classic snes style controllers and it kicks ass. Playstation d-pad can eat my asshole and any other d-pad for that matter.
