How the fuck did all this content even fit on 1 cartridge and why the fuck didn't they make world bigger if it was that small?

Also in case this is too little for a thread: Rank all 5 games.

>> No.6489702

Games like FF6 or DKC are bigger than all 5 combined, brainlet.

Not all carts hold the same mega, zoom zoom.
And I'm not gonna rank shit, they're all masterpieces.

>> No.6489745

World was on a 512kb cart, which was effectively the smallest cart for the Super Famicom. There were a very small number of games that used 256kb carts, only Ms. Pac-Man and Mr. Do off the top of my head. Maybe Smash TV, though I'm pretty sure that was 512kb too.

the real question is how did that bit get flipped for Mario 1 and LL?

SMB3 < SMB2 < SMB1 < SMW < SMB:TLL

They're all fantastic except for Lost Levels, don't know what the fuck they were thinking with that little expansion pack.

I unironically agree with the reverse symbols. Mario 3 is overrated as hell in comparison to 1, LL, and especially World. 1 does a fantastic job of ramping up in difficulty and being altogether fun to replay over and over again. LL is my personal favorite because I am damn good at Luigi controls in it. World is clearly superior to 3, being truly about twice as much content, with better everything. 2 is tough as heck as well, though not as difficult as LL it is actually fairly close as the game goes on. Levels were larger and more interesting to explore than in 3, which feels like a downgrade in a number of ways.

Too many of 3's innovations were either underused or made the game worse as much as it did better. The double height screen shrank the levels about in half for instance. Good for flying in like one level, but that gimmick ruins more than it saves. The puzzle level in the ice cave is the best mario level period though.

This would have been great bait if you hadn't implied that World was in way a step up in difficulty. It's literally proto New Super Mario Bros., but at least NSMB has more actual platforming than fucking SMW. SMW is like 90% ground levels with no risk of falling ever.

Why would you want Mario World to be bigger? It's as big as it should be. Might be a small game in size but it does so much stuff in the different areas that I can't imagine it being a better game if you add more to it.

Cheaper and more available. There was a worldwide shortage circa 1989 (causing situations like Osomatsu-kun on the Mega Drive reduced to 3 levels)

From a cursory look at the internal structure of SMW, absolutely about everything is compressed to hell in the Japanese version to even fit, then the worldwide versions had a REDONE version of the compression programming to be able to fit the different assets again. Nothing comes close to that, even in Nintendo's later games. After all, there's a RAM cost to heavy compression usage where you have much less data to work with for the actual runtime game logic. So developers would rather not do it.

Taking Super Mario All Stars for example, the frequently used non-SMA assets are mostly uncompressed.

There's interviews by Miyamoto about pressure they faced developing Zelda 3 to fit everything on the small cart, and details they had to omit, and avoiding an expansion for the English version... and how they couldn't get all their ideas in SMW and how it felt "unfinished".

World (SNES) > 3 (GBA+WiiU VC) > YI (SNES+romhack) > NSMB (DS) > NSMB U (Wii U) > 1 (NES) > 2u (GBA) > 2j (NES) > NSMB Wii (Wii) > NSMB 2 (3DS+DLC)
