Yoshi's Island sucks. There are plenty of 2D platformers that are better than Yoshi's Island on both the SNES and Genesis such as Super Mario World, Sonic CD, Sonic 1, Sonic 2, Sonic 3, Sonic & Knuckles, Donkey Kong Country and so many other titles. As for any good platformers on Saturn or PlayStation, I'd go with Tomba and Gex.

> Yoshi's Island received "instant" and "universal acclaim", according to an IGN retrospective[24] and video game review aggregator Metacritic, respectively.[18] At the time of its 1995 release, Matt Taylor of Diehard GameFan thought Yoshi's Island could be "possibly the best platform game of all time".[21] Nintendo Power too said that the game was "one of the biggest, most beautiful games ever made".[25] Next Generation was also most impressed by the game's "size and playability".[23] Diehard GameFan's three reviewers gave the game a near perfect score. To wit, Nicholas Dean Des Barres said it was "one of the handful of truly perfect games ever produced", and lamented that the magazine had given Donkey Kong Country, which he felt was a lackluster game in comparison, the extra single point for a perfect score.
> The game has sold over four million copies.

This 100%. Yoshi’s Island was lightning in a bottle like Abbey Road or the original Metropolis movie. It was a huge budget End of life passion project with some of the greatest game developers of all time working on it over an extended time frame. I get that people may not personally like it, but it’s a mechanically incredible platformer and is just really well polished. I can’t thing of any other games quite like that in other genres. I explained my reasoning in this post. Sonic never got that game. That situation just wasn’t possible with SOA or SOJ because they were too busy sabotaging and fighting each other. Obviously almost everyone on here loves all of the games you listed. They’re all amazing. Yoshis Island was a swan song with a massive blowout budget. Rumors are that it cost upwards of $50 million. Which is a huge budget in today’s money. Let alone back then. Nintendo gave a top team a blank check and almost unlimited development time.

The Sonic games are infinitely better. Super Mario World is better. Donkey Kong Country is better. Plenty of platformers out there is better than Yoshi's Island. I think the only reason Yoshi's Island ever gets any praise, is because eBay sellers are having a hard time selling it, so they need to boost it's popularity or Nintendo fanboys can't stomach the fact that this was the weakest entry in the Mario series. Mechanics are just one element of what makes a game good though, the same way you can single out editing in film or prose in literature. The whole is greater than the sum of its parts. Was a sega kid but owned both. Always slept on Yoshis island 2. played the first world and always got bored of it. Last year I decided to give it a chance, and you know what, it is actually fucking great. Birth of the tutorials "hurrr good game design" bullshit that I feel like we are just starting to realize clutter up games HOWEVER still a great game. Before I used to think DKC was the best platformer on SNES but I do think Yoshi Island is greater in terms of vision and presentation (DKC is still top shelf, it's just different).

For those that are saying Yoshi Island is shit who have claimed to have beat it (on a real SNES/SFC) you have shit poor tastes in gaming lol.

SONIC doesn't hold a candle to Yoshi Island 2. The first 4 levels of Sonic 2 are great but they are no where near as fullfilling and good as Yoshi's island 2. I'm not even a Nintendrone either.

I think it's the technical aspects that really push it into being the best game on the console. Fuzzy is a good example of that. The enemy only appears in two levels of the entire game, but the sheer amount of technical wizardry that went into making the dizzy effect work is fascinating. The developers had to use some of the SNES' lesser-used modes in really unconventional ways for extremely minor visual effects.

Going to pile on with those who don’t like Yoshi’s Island. I had no desire to finish it when it was new. I’ve attempted to replay it repeatedly since then, but stopped rather early on each time.

I have concluded the issue is that the levels have an extreme amount of verticality for a sidescroller. Mixed in with that are a bunch of claustrophobic “indoor” segments, whether they’re cave levels or walled areas within a level. These elements make YI a slog compared to any other Mario game.

>> No.6589648

Story is such a weird ass game.
On one hand it has many elements similar to Island, but on the other, it's like a completely different kind of game.
While YI is more of a traditional 2D platformer, with the added egg throw mechanic, Story went the extra mile and incorporated more nuances to the movement, Yoshi can move very slowly, but also run really fast, or somewhere in between, and you're in full control of that. Also 360 degrees of movement for his tongue action and the egg throw, both also being more in depth with many different possible control options.
It's a game with a lot of work put into its controls, but the level design and the overall game design is really weird, to the point that it rightfully turned off many people who played it casually, since story mode only lets you play 6 levels, and since you can finish them by eating any fruit, most people got a really short and underwhelming experience with it.
The real meat of the game is playing for score on trial mode, after unlocking all 24 levels, which for many people would be a chore and I'd understand that. I learned to appreciate it but it's a really strange game.
Japan loves it though, which is why it gets so much rep in the Smash series.

What IS good about Yoshi's Island? It's not the movement, it's kinda janky and the hovering never quite feels like a mechanic you can master, almost like it's doing its own thing. Egg throwing is awkward and it being reliant on an automatically moving cursor is unnecessary and would have been better off with more control. Baby Mario is a contrived health bar and his cry is widely considered to be one of the worst and most annoying things ever put into a game. The levels are passable but never anything special.

What's good about it exactly? Seems like a passable platformer at best.
