It's not that hard. Some enemy types can be unforgiving, but Kain's weapon roster is pretty overpowered and there's little chance of running out of any of them so long as you explore (and why wouldn't you? Exploring is the point of the game).

Soul Reaver's story is a pretty basic revenge story. It just had an abrupt ending that shifted gears as a reflection of the cut content which forced some major story changes. The plotting and characters are all straightforward.

That doesn't make it a complex storyline. It's just a twist at the end. The original story of the game before it changed course had a similar implication, though in a different context.

Beat soul reaver for the first time this month, I absolutely love the story and voice acting, but damn does the 3rd of the game being cut show. So many dead ends, I had to use a guide to find out where to go some of the time

The PS1 version has some pretty rough load times. The PC port used to be a pain to get running on modern systems, but thanks to Verok's patch it runs without any trouble now. Even has good controller support. I think it's a game that looks a lot better on a CRT or with some standard/not obnoxious scanlines. The game can look overly muddy without them. I've always just played the PS1 version for this reason, but for all I know you can get something like SweetFX to work with the PC version. I don't really know.

The first game Blood Omen, is like a dark, gothic Zelda game. Top-down view and all. I seem to remember getting over-powered as hell in that game and just stomping through it toward the end.

The second game, Soul Reaver, I feel is the best implantation of a metroidvania styled game in 3D ever. Soul Reaver 2 is still up there

Blood Omen 2...is weird. Some world building I like, but it introduces aliens and magitek. It's a typical third-person action game with stealth elements from the era.

Legacy of Kain: Defiance is a rushed and repetitive slog but a good close to the story

He's talking about Blood Omen. Soul Reaver was the only LoK game on Dreamcast.
The Dreamcast version of Soul Reaver is the best graphically though, at least out of the box. The PC version probably has mods, but I haven't checked myself.

Funnily enough I just made a whole video about the PC port of Blood Omen. If you don't wanna watch the video, the long and short of it is that the PC version with Verok's GL Wrapper and Patch is the pretty much the only tolerable way to play it. The PS1 version suffers from horrible slowdown on original hardware, and on the emulated versions (even the PS3 and PSP ones) the fucking god awful load times are still unchanged no matter what you do. You'll need to be switching spells and weapons a lot in the second half of the game, and every time you open or close the menu you get a 3-5 second loading screen. It sucks. The game itself is fun and worth playing, but there's no way I'd play it on original hardware with those fucking load times. The PC port will likely never come to Steam or GOG because the legal situation around it is very muddy and weird, seems like Square Enix and Activision don't wanna play ball on it.

The patched version's cutscenes are from Youtube and the first fmv begins with a watermark which is why it doesn't play until the end.

You must be referring to a different patch, there's like 4 "high quality FMV" patches for some reason. I just checked my original PS1 disc and the verok version and they're identical. No watermark, and the FMV plays all the way to the end, which one are you talking about? They're hardly "high quality" but there's nothing wrong with them and they are better than the PS1 version.

From what I can gather, the Verok GL version FMV's are bink rips from the PS1 version and used to be hosted on Nosgothica before it went under. New players should just make sure they get the Verok patch and not bother with anything else. I wasn't aware of the youtube rips.
