I have never actually played what is described by some as the greatest 16-bit RPG of all time, Chrono Trigger. But I am remedying that tonight.

Any tips or advice for a first time player? Does your character or monsters positions on the battlefield matter at all or is it just for show? I can't seem to be able to move my PCs except when they attack and that is automatic.

I have been grinding a bit and playing the games at the Millenial Fair but I haven't gone through the portal yet. I see that I could get a bronze helm and karate gi for Marle, I already have a bronze helm for Chrono but I see I could get a much better sword for him if I grind but it's getting a bit tiresome. Is it worth it to do this? Chrono and Marle are both level 3, I have seen it recommended to be level 5 before you go through the portal.

Also Chrono Trigger General, discuss the game, characters, tactics and lore

grinding in almost every rpg is a waste of time, just play through the game going from beat to beat. the moment you mindlessly start running in circles to refight the same thing so you can get to that next level or next piece of equipment is the instant you remove yourself from the game and begin to look at it as a job, a checklist to complete. This is absolutely the wrong mindset for any game. Don't grind, just play it. Guarantee you, you'll get a better helmet in the amount of time you spent grinding for it if you just progressed in the game instead.

Yes I was actually thinking I would probably stumble onto this gear soon enough if I just progress. I don't know if Chrono Trigger is a game that even benefits from grindingm

game has very little survival elements to it's leveling system. If your die many times at a boss, it's less likely that you're underleveled and more likely there's some sort of trick or gimmick to it you need to learn.
Usually that info can be gotten from NPCs to encourage you to read all the flavor text (and I mean, it's an RPG, so why wouldn't you)

Enemy positioning will effect certain attacks, and certain enemies will change stances or animations during battle. You can't reposition your characters, but you'd almost never need to.

Early game is very straightforward as far as dungeons and fighting monsters go. There's plenty of extra time you can spend gettting extra items and equipment from helping villagers, though. Later on the game opens up a lot more and you may need to grind for stuff like the sand pit.

Don’t grind. Fly through those portals like the world depends on it because it does.

Why do you need a primer on a video game that's pretty easy and straightforward regardless of how you play it

What? I don't know a ton about the game besides that it is hailed as a masterpiece and one of the greatest RPGs of the era. I know vague plot points (portals, time travel, a villain named Lavos and theres some frog dude) but other than that I don't know anything about how the game plays besides being turned based

I don't know about Chrono Trigger, but many force you to grind otherwise it's impossible to proceed.

In the hundreds I've played grinding is the option for those that can't figure out strategy.

Chrono Trigger is pretty cool, Grandia is better though.

chrono cross isn’t canon and people who like it were molested as children and now wish to do the same to others.

It doesn't really hold up as an RPG, but I like the art.

You can't move your characters during combat, but it rarely matters.
>Is it worth it to do this?
No. The game is easy and requires no grinding at all.

Who on earth said that? I can't imagine running around grinding to that level so early on for so little payoff.

It's a great game though OP, I hope you have a great time.

Just play man. Don't skip fights. try to fight so you don't have to worry about grinding at all.

There is a part much much later in the game where you go through this automated gauntlet of fighting which you can grind to quickly gain much higher levels and handle final bosses with ease.

Grinding is only for the second playthrough/a specific boss, don't do it on your first.

There is no reason at all to grind if you just fight the enemies you come across. That's what makes Chrono Trigger so great. It's very well balanced. There is one exception though. There's a certain wizard that you fight, and you can grind the bats on the stairs before him to get enough tech points to learn good spells. Doesn't take that long to do though.

When you get to Zeal, if you are 100% it, there are some missible items there.
