It's not a meme but unless you live somewhere where the weather is bad for discs, you're going to be fine.

You should always think about disc rot, because it's a terrible way to lose the games.

Nah, I'm more of a Mega Drive/SFC guy. Stop projecting your 5th gen zoom point of view and console wars onto others.

there are far more great games on the SNES, NES, Genesis and N64 than the ps1&2, saturn, xbox and gapecube.

I've just really started my PSX collection within the past few months, had no idea that orientation of how I store the discs can contribute to a decreased lifespan. Any other obvious tips? I've been storing them of course in their jewel cases on shelves, but didn't know I should be storing them vertically

Phillips CD-i, Apple Pippin, any of the playstations.
Now try to name any CuckeD system better than Mega Drive, SFC or FC.

Implying those systems aren't total shit. LOL they can't even do real sounding musics. Back to blowing your games like a homo, cartfag.

For CDs, yes because the reflective layer is exposed at the edge of the disk even with the lacquer finish and is aluminum so it can degrade with extended temperature and environment exposure. DVD switched to plastic to protect the reflective layer and it's more resistant than the laquer but still is possible to kill. Blu-rays upped that obviously with more protections but yeah, all in all, only early optical discs suffer from disc rot.

Discs last longer than all the other digital tech and my gameboy still works so I'm not worried about it. Especially if it were a gamecube. The gamecube itself is going to break before the disc ages too much. They have a shelf life of like 100 years in an air conditioned room.
