Are there any types/genres of games that you would say were perfected almost immediately and got nothing but worse with new iterations?

Star Fox 64 was unironically the best game of its genre. I have yet to see a rail shooter of its kind that's better than Star Fox 64.

I guess you could say that 64 was an improvement on SNES Star Fox, but original Star Fox was frankly way too ambitious for the SNES.

It's a game that simply shouldn't exist. Every time I think about it I'm mindboggled that it happened.

British 16 year olds shouldn't be making cutting games at Nintendo's corporate HQ in Japan.
The SNES shouldn't be pushing 3D polygons.
An action game shouldn't run at 10-20fps.
A home console shouldn't be running a polygonal 3D game before Doom is even released.

And yet here we are.

I agree, but I haven’t played Panzer Dragoon yet.

Well thing is Start Fox 64 came out when rail shooters had been around for quite a while and were becoming less fasionable

Gotta level with you, I prefer the much-older Space Harrier, not only to SF64 but to Sega's other arcade rail shooters

uh same actually
