Why do people say that Super Mario Bros. hasnt aged well? Sure, its not as good as SMB3 or World or Land 2 or other games, but it still holds up and when it was released, it was the greatest game ever

There's your answer. You don't have any reason to play SMB1 over any other more sophisticated Mario game, it doesn't offer anything interesting.

wrong. the physics strike a good balance between being unwieldy and empowering, when you're running for a long jump you actually feel the speed unlike 3 or world where you can instantly reset your momentum. the gameover system is one of the few that offers tension but isn't unreasonably punishing in the context of the game's length and moment to moment difficulty.

No, I'm not, it's the real father of the genre along with Jungle Hunt.

Donkey Kong was released before both Pitfall and Jungle Hunt and is also better designed by many magnitudes.

>> No.7324809

>>7324796
donkey kong was single screen, nothing outside of that single screen existed, Pitfall and Jungle Hunt made you want to explore, sure the tech wasnt there for seemless scrolling so you loaded a new screen, but it felt like a world, not an arcade monitor

Because anytime somebody says something "didnt age well" you should disregard everything they say.

>Why do people say that Super Mario Bros. hasnt aged well

Because memesters say that about EVERY retro video game. EVERY single one of them. For starters, memesters don't even play retro videogames, they just circlejerk about it because their YouTube/Twitch ecelebs play them or like them.

The one time those people beat a retro videogame in a two year span is a meme one like Metroid, Zelda or Mario, on an emulator with all its conveniences and then comment on how "technically it didn't age well because [shitty opinions here]".

>has been utterly outdone by SMB3 in every area

Its a nice little curio but nothing more. Why do you think Nintendo keeps milking it with stupid crap like the Game & Watch handheld dedicated to just playing that 1 rom of it? Its just a symbol; a trendy faux retro icon for hipsters to jerk off over. Real Mariofans just treat it with restrained reverence. It started it all, but its kinda shit in retrospect. Only butthurt boomers like Malstrom say otherwise. M-MUH BLUE SKIES

You could give this game to someone of any age group and they'd immediately pick up on it.
I can't think of another game that intuitive except maybe pacman.

They probably can't adapt to the momentum based gameplay. Mario is like a truck there. It's also common for you to hear complaints about games designed around not being able to switch the direction after you jumped like castlevania and ghouls n ghosts. They want to jump for the sake of jumping and make last milisecond adjustments, similar to ninja gaiden. I grew up with a SNES and the first time I played NES mario I felt like that too but after 5 minutes you learn sometimes you might even release the directional pad he keeps going and it's fun

only mario game i ever completed and the only one i go back to

>> No.7329751

It is the mario that is most balanced around its core components (all it has at this point). Take the coins for example. This one has the highest scarcity of coins, to the point that you are inclined to collect them all in order to have a stockpile of lives for the harder worlds.

Take also the warp zone. Sure you can look it up and go the easiest route from 1 to 4 to 8, but most are going to make it only to 5, the start of the real game. And if you aren't good enough for that, you are going to regret warping.

I would argue the galaxy games as well, even if you aren't a tryhard autismo the lack of more advanced movement options start to be felt by the second game, everything feels a little stunted.

>> No.7329910

>>7329883
I never got the hype for galaxy. It barely feels like the most lazy platformer design ever
>maps are just scattered spheres of minigames you have to complete to go to the next sphere
>theres not much complex platforming and you can only take a warp star to the next sphere
It was like the laziest way to design mario levels because they couldnt be assed to think about a level layout like 64 or hell even Sunshine

I didn't have problem with the concept itself really. They had done two iterations of exploration based platforming and wanted to do something more focused and linear, fine. The problem I had was that most platforming ideas they threw at you felt like the equivalent of blueballs. They're lauded for the formula of introducing an idea, playing with it, and then having a final test that requires mastery, but they rarely ever got to that last part, more like they'd introduce an idea and the stop at very edge of what's immediately intuitive. Though I guess that's what I get for being a bing bing wahoo manchild.
