here in the UK, Sega did win, Nintendo dropped the ball and fell over its own feet, but this island is complex, we had a very vibrant home computer scene and was pretty much the only place to adopt the superior at the time, Amiga, there were a lot of Sega/Amiga ports, with local software houses working on both, Nintendo, not so much.

Sega never gave final numbers like Nintendo. The 30 million number is as of 1995 from Sega of Japan when they discontinued it in Japan. The Genesis was still on sale for ~4 more years in the US and the rest of the world. When you factor that in looking at reports from Sega of America around 98 as well as just general sales data you get a number closer to about 35-37 million for the Genesis worldwide.

Also the SNES's success in Japan really inflates its numbers. In Japan SNES sold 17 Million, with the PC Engine in Second at about 7 million and the Mega Drive in 3rd with about 3 million. If you remove Japan from the equation for both systems, you get a much better picture at how close they really were in the rest of the world.

When you look at every other region, the sales of the systems are a lot closer and more accurately reflect the rivalry. Japan is the outlier and it skews the numbers so they don't accurately reflect what the situation was in the rest of the world.

If we're talking about certain genres, including multiplayer games and FPSes like Goldeneye, Turok, and Perfect Dark, the N64 wins easily in terms of those genres relative to what they were on all 5th gen consoles. Just about everything else. The only real weak points of the Saturn's library are 3D Platformers, and FPS games. And even then it's not completely barren in those categories. The N64 on the other hand has giant holes in it's library when it comes to things like RPGs, Shmups, Fighting Games, etc.

That said, you could argue that the Saturn and PS1 tie when it comes to shmups and fighting games. You could even argue that the Saturn has a slight edge with fighting games when you factor in which ports are better for a lot of Capcom and SNKs ports. For RPGs the PS1 definitely has more and wins, but that doesn't mean the Saturn can't give it a good run for it's money. The N64 on the other hand has practically nothing of value in those genres.

Consider this: history is written by the victors. Right? So in terms of games, this means that the "winning" console will undoubtedly have the most impact on future gens and create the most long lasting new genres and series. So for example, you still see the influence of in ovations made on the PS2 to this day. And most of the big name games and series that started there still have some presence today as well. (If even as HD collections)

By that metric, Genesis not only lost gen 4, but was basically nothing but a foot note. Sure, we get genesis collections, but most of those games never got sequels and never shaped things to come. They just existed, and then didn't matter afterwards.
