any console with cpu fuses will never get a softmod.
and yes, switch cfw is a hardmod because it leverages a hardware vulnerability.
Serious question, why the fuck are you on /vr/ if you won't even attempt to learn electronics and soldering?
I'm no voltar but I'm ok enough to maintain my consoles and mod them when needed.
It comes in handy in other ways too, I fixed my headphones and soldered on a nice replaceable 3.5mm jack so I never have to deal with a dead cable ever again.
It cost 20 cents and 20 minutes of my time compared to spending another $150 on a new pair.

Anyway, it's absurd to think you can't enjoy this hobby extensively without electronics skills. Hardware is hardly necessary, and you know it. You know you probably just go back to modern setup because it's less of a pain in the ass in the end, and the hardwarefag shit is only to busy your hands.

360 has BC with retro games, which is attained mainly by modding so yes it's retro.
You need a soldering iron to hardmod.
Yes you need to hardmod, softmods will not save your xbox from softbricking due to a dead hdd or cd drive.
You also have to remove the clock cap on pre1.6's and you 100% will have to replace the CPU and PSU caps, if not now then in the next 5 years.
You also need to replace the analog sticks when they start drifting.
fuck off and stop posting about shit you don't understand.
>>7372127
For jaspers, depending on your dash you can JTAG.
If you're going to RGH in general you will need some kind of device to read/write to the nand and a modchip to glitch the boot process into running unsigned code. My experience is limited to corona slims though.
I would suggest reading through the plebbit 360hacks wiki and watching as many weekendmodder videos as you can before attempting.
The process isn't well documented and gets confusing when you're new.

>Yes you need to hardmod, softmods will not save your xbox from softbricking due to a dead hdd or cd drive
No matter how your Xbox is modded, your first order of business should be dumping the HDD key which will indeed let you replace the hardrive in a softmodded system.
The DVD drives are interchangeable and not locked to the system afaik.
>You also have to remove the clock cap on pre1.6's
No need to desolder that. Just rip it out.
>you 100% will have to replace the CPU and PSU caps, if not now then in the next 5 years
Same can be said for most any electronic device. Thankfully the consoles of the era seem to be mostly safe from the capacitor plague.
>You also need to replace the analog sticks when they start drifting.
You're better off just buying some spare controllers anyways. These days a lot of Xbox controllers have massive issues with the analog face buttons not registering properly or consistently which leads to games with a low deadzone for button press not seeing them.
And you can't replace the pad on the pcb for the face button so the controller is just trash then.

See, the textures I get because even when they're made sharper, there are still artistic choices being made that effect the look of a game.

Framerates, on the other hand, were limitations that the developers HAD to work with. You can tell rare themselves wanted the games to run as well as they could, evidenced by the fact that the European version of PD runs better due to optimizations made.

Like these people think that developers intentionally made their game run at sub-20 FPS for the sake of "soul" or some dumb shit. I get complaining about removed features and changing level design, but that isn't what happened here.

They could've went with cheaper explosion effects, but didn't. That's an artistic decision that you're overwriting if you pump up the framerate. >Aug 25th 2007 (modded) - released, the version that leaked today, has a bunch of things like XBL support modded out, strings/functionality changed (16:10 -> 21:9, likely "BRING GE BACK MGM" too)
>Aug 25th 2007 (semi-modded) - unreleased, shown in Graslu00 youtube video, is likely a WIP mod since it still has XBL options, but the text changes are there
>Aug 25th 2007 (original) - unreleased, the untouched build this leak originated from

>Aug 25 2007 is the build that this leak originated from, but this leak isn't the original build itself, unreleased
>Aug 25 2007 (semi-modded) was shown on youtube a few days ago, had some patches to the strings & XBL multiplayer option was available, maybe had leaderboards too. unreleased.
>Aug 25 2007 (modded) is the build that was leaked, has changes to the strings & the code itself, removing XBL multiplayer options/leaderboards, changing strings like 16:10 -> 21:9, probably also added the "BRING GE BACK" message.

Also we've never seen footage of this build btw, the 30-minute demo video that leaked a few years ago seems to have a lot of the same bugs as the leaked build (eg every costume rendering when in watch-mode), I would have guessed that'd be fixed in the 3 months between leak and this build, but who knows.

Because the game's code and assets are split into individual files, it's probably way easier to mod this than the N64 original ROM. For example, the classic graphics mode is missing a head. So... just swap the missing head in. We know the data formats that GE uses. In theory, a lot of bugs found in this remaster can probably be fixed.

Maybe the patch >>7374462 could have some effect on audio, not sure.

>> No.7374474

The action variants of music aren't playing, and the main menu music doesn't work when you go back to the main menu. Also, the watch pause menu theme doesn't play, but that's possible just a bug in the actual game. What I think has happened is that the build that the YTer was playing the other day is a slightly less fucked with build than the one we have. His build has properly working music. When you're in the bottling chamber with Alec, and the alarm goes off, the action theme starts playing. Stuff like that.

microsoft used shitty caps for the entire board, and that whole era had bad caps in general, see PS3 fats and some slims with the NEC/TOKINS.
1.6 OGs are notorious for bad cpu caps, but in general every xbox will need an entire recapping in the next 5-8 years.
They're all through-hole though it's not difficult to do with some decent tools.

If you have a dead hard drive (these drives are going on 20 years old) without a backed up CPU key you have to install a modchip to even get the thing to boot.
Also swapping out the HDD with only a softmod is a pain in the dick and you have to get a lockable one.
With a modchip you can through any old drive in there with a sata converter, I even experimented with SD cards and they work.
Again, simple through hole soldering of a pin header and 1 single wire to the board.
There's no reason not to do it.

Another hack-undo/restoration patch, this restores "leaderboards" option on the main menu (see >>7374462 for another restoration patch)

It's just undoing some of the hacks the leaker made to the XEX, the nfo says
>Removed crashing leaderboard from menu & watch
>Replaced 16:10 aspect ratio with 21:9
but there's probably even more things changed (as we see by the removed XBL option)

Very possible one of these hacks is responsible for the menu music issue & other differences from Graslu00's video, since his XEX was only semi-hacked compared to the released one.
(Still hoping someone can ask him for a bindiff/xdelta against the released XEX, no idea if he'd be willing tho)

>> No.7380812

According to Graslu, the original longplay of GE XBLA had music added in post. Obviously he played it with music muted and then added the appropriate music changes in post. He says he was under the impression issues like that were going to be fixed when the release was put out, but it was seemingly rushed. This means that people are gonna have to dig into the game itself and figure out why certain audio cues aren't working. Or maybe the OG leakers will do that. Hard to say.

>> No.7380813

Here's all the depatching codes, restores XBL option in multiplayer, restores leaderboards option in menu + watch, no idea what else they might change (some of them seem related to gunshots/props, dunno what's changing with them tho)

Menu music still seems to stop after exiting level sadly, could be as simple as leaker changing 1 byte somewhere, to fix that we'd really need Graslu's help with an xdelta between his XEX and the released one (and make sure to "xextool -eu -cu xexfile.xex" both of them beforehand!)

Maybe these will help with some of the other differences people noticed from his video though.

Format is search -> replace

a stock xbox needs a locked HDD to boot.
you need the console specific key to lock the drive, and a lockable drive.
taking 10 minutes to solder on a pin header and a single (1) wire makes it so that your xbox is completely future proof and will work with basically any type of storage medium.
It literally takes less time than a softmod, and you can easily find "dead" xboxes for single digit prices online.

Not (him) but you're obviously clueless when it comes to OG Xbox. The power supply and CPU caps go bad quite frequently, partially due to excessive heat but also cap plague. They need to be replaced fairly often.
You're right about the DVD drive, but Xbox DVD drives have a high failure rate. It's best to play games from HDD or even remove the drive entirely. You need an additional mod to add load to the DVD circuit to trick the console into thinking there's a drive, or you need to hard mod.
You can just zero the HDD key on soft mod, but you still need to lock the HDD, and not all drives can be locked. Hard mod allows you to use any drive, locked or not.

So the Rare dev that leaked the remakes existence in 2007 was correct at blaming Nintendo, color me surprised.
He actually said almost the same words as Ross Bury did in that article, that "There is no way a Nintendo game is coming out on a Microsoft console", hmm...

>Having peeked at the leaked GE360 version, Bury and Edmonds can tell that a "more final" version of GE360 had cleaned up a few issues found in the leaked build. The more-final build "has several new art assets that aren't in this version, such as vehicles, and I had been working on the front end and a replacement for the 'folders' [menu] interface," Bury says, while Edmonds points to some "pink polygon" issues that had been cleared up.

>"I don't believe you will ever see that [more-final] version," Bury says.
Well we know there's a November build out there, and the 2007 leaker claimed development stopped in November, so maybe we will get to see it one day.
Just hope we won't have to wait another 13 years for it... plz someone leak the password

Take a guess who published the original game, and so would have owned publishing rights over it.
With Banjo/Conker/PD/etc we know the rights were transferred with Rare's purchase, there's been no indication of that for GE, with the devs putting blame onto Nintendo for it that suggests the rights are still with them.
The recent article already explains all of this btw, it's a pretty interesting read.

>Z: Back button
