Last thread hit the bump limit.

This thread is to discuss the Mister project itself and FPGA emulation of classic consoles and computers in general.

Latest updates:

Zaxxon
- Fix colours in Zaxxon / Super Zaxxon
- Add pause

Jimmy is on a roll adding OSD pause to every arcade core he can get his hands on.

You're not inserting the cartridge into the actual system. Better off emulating on a Wii instead. It's a superior experience if you're just going to move ROMs around.
>SNAC adapters
You're converting the signal to USB. This is not the intended signal that the original console uses and is therefore fake. Basically turns your controller into a generic USB controller.
>casemod out of a dead console
3 strikes and you're out! Removing the working components of the console turns it into a vacant plastic shell. Again, might as well just use a Wii since you're just turning something into a cheap emulation box that's merely a facade of a real console.

I'm inserting the cartridge into the actual system though. My system consists of a Retrode to interface the cartridge.

>You're converting the signal to USB. This is not the intended signal that the original console uses and is therefore fake.
The original console receives electrical pulses that indicate which button is being pressed, this does the same thing. Therefore it's accurate.

>Removing the working components of the console turns it into a vacant plastic shell.
All consoles shells are vacant plastic shells when they are manufactured and then they are filled with components. So the MiSTer system achieves the same thing. Therefore it's accurate.

I really doubt the chinks are doing a worse job than any other retard you're paying 2x to buy the same chips and pretend to solder them themselves. These chips are cheap, not really worth cloning and they're hard to fake anyway because everyone memtests them, and aside from some shoddy flux jobs their insect hands are perfectly fine for basic SMD work.

The difference between coomlectors and smart people: The coomlector feels better the more money they spend to get the same thing as the smart person. In this case the "thing" is playing old video games. If the coomlector has the chance to pay an extra $100 to play Neo Turf Masters, which smart people typically pay $0 for, it makes them feel even better, and this works the other way too. MiSTer is a good middle ground between real hardware setup and emulation. It's for those people that wanna push things a bit further without dishing out thousands of dollars for flashcards and ODEs. With Retroarch you can get latency to 1 frame behind a MiSTer, and audio delay about of about 21ms too.

Emulation is still the budget and flexibility king, no one's denying that, and ideally everyone who owns a MiSTer has an emulation setup on the side too. I own a mix of real hardware, MiSTer and a PC for emulation.

So I'm a big retard and new to the whole MiSTer thing, but I've been loving it so much. I want to hook it up to my CRT, so I got an HDMI to VGA adapter for direct video and VGA to component cable. However, the picture comes out all fucked up with the screen constantly scrolling vertically in menus and games. I ran the update script and messed around with the ini file; setting composite_sync=1, ypbpr=1 and direct_video=1 but no such luck. The component cables I got look a little different than what was shown on the Amazon page, so maybe that's the issue? I'd be greatly appreciative for any help with my situation.

I bought the SNAC set from misterfpga.co.uk and they came without cases. Trying the SNES one- yeah it works fine, but disconnecting the controller from the port was frightening for how much force was required vs. the size of the adapter (and doing so against a bare PCB).

Without access to a 3D printer is there anything I could use as a case? My usual approach is to just wrap everything in solidifying putty but that looks like shit so it's kind of a last resort.

As for the ports themselves, I haven't see anything. Honestly, it's probably all just in your head, file them down a bit if they're tight. >but aren't we already kinda nearing the limit in terms of the number of logic elements that are available on the Altera Cyclone V chip?

This stuff is misleading. We're not really sure how many logic blocks a system uses. Raw power alone isn't an indicator. The SNES for example is using 75% logic at the moment while NeoGeo only uses 37%, which is crazy. That's because blocks need to be allocated for all the special chips even though they won't all be used at a time.

NES also uses 45%, still way more than a NeoGeo probably due to all the mappers.

All this does it explain why the SNES doesn't play nice with straight 60.00hz screens, MiSTer will have the exact same problem unless you turn on triple buffering and re-introduce all the input lag that you just lost by using an FPGA. Bsnes now has dynamic rate control as does Retroarch so it's a complete non issue, it's also a non issue for the Super NT which also has a 60.00hz compatability mode turned on by defalt. Those modes are innaccurate, what Higan does isn't, as is clearly explained in what you posted.

- A 144hz+ PC gaming monitor that's dime-a-dozen at this point (3-5ms lag).
- The LG C9/CX OLED that are 120hz with no ghosting, perfect blacks, CRT like contrast and have the least amount of lag of all the big screen TVS (7ms lag).
- Or just get a CRT that people are literally looking to throw in the trash and will gladly give away for free (0ms lag).

It's a literal non-issue unless your an idiot or live in a shithole country, at which point the MiSTer sadly is above your station in life and WTF are you even doing here acting like your cope take is relevant in any of this in the first place?

True, but that has nothing to do with software emulators struggling to sync audio & video. As I said earlier, the sync issue happens before any signal is sent to a screen. It's just the nature of serial processing, which IS just a problem for software emulation.

>> No.7694197

Not true ... the worst thing that happens on the mister is that an LCD just refuses to show the signal because the sync signal is too odd. Some TV's/Displays are more tolerant some are less.
DoDonPachi in this case is not playable on most LCD's without speeding the game clock up or introducing a buffer that adds up input lag. (don't know if this is true for freesync capable LCD's)
SNES and the most other 16bit cores are not too off, so most screens are quite happy without the need of buffering.

Tearing is caused by writing in the frame buffer while the buffer gets drawn on the screen.
This is due to the nature of how a GPU on a PC works.
The only core that I can think of that has maybe a frame buffer by designe is the ao486 core, but I'm not 100% sure about this.

All that faq section does is explain to the average 60.00hz screen user why that refresh causes problems, it’s entirely created by the users screen refresh rate. The IO boards only have so much space for ports and what they'd have to give up for composite and s video just isn't worth it. You can sample vga and hdmi down, but you can't sample composite and s video up. >why this isn't standard is beyond me.
Because most of the market isn't even using MiSTer on CRTs like they should be.

Of the few who are, most are using it on VGA monitors for the sake of 31khz computer support, so they certainly don't need composite or S-video. The rest are using it on 15khz displays.

Anyone outside of America has easy access to RGB SCART, and conversion is trivial via BNC. Lots of people in America bought PVMs for next to nothing before the youtubers caught on and hiked up the ebay prices, so all you're left with is a small subset of American zoomers who can't afford TVs with RGB input, and aren't smart enough to mod in RGB support.

So you go from 30% of the market, to 10%, and finally down to maybe 5%, worst case scenario. Hardly even worth developing a board for.

>RGB
Only problem is that the graphics of every system before 6th gen are designed to look right using composite video signal and cables, to the extent they base the visuals around it's artifacts to create colors and the illusion of resolution than the system is capable of.

There seems to be an overwhelming inability or refusal to acknowledge this simple, well documented, easily illustratable and observable fact. I guess the cottage industry of RGB cables and console mods e-celeb influencer campaigns really are effective on semi-autustic idiots.

Anyways, that means the logical conclusion would rather be to skip RGB in favor for composite on the analog board if the $15 tops it would cost extra is such an gargantuan issue.

BTW, your post is so full of dumb shit lets just take a look at some of the highlights:

>most are using it on VGA monitors
No, most are using it on whatever CRT they can get their hands on, which most likely are small shitty 4:3 consumer sets with RCA as the highest available input.
>so all you're left with is a SMALL SUBSET of American zoomers who can't afford TVs with RGB input

Really gonna need a source on that besides the false narrative you just spun from your ass that just got debunked.
It's rather the completely other way around, every CRT TV can do RF/composite and very few NTSC (which outnumber PAL as a standard) sets can do RGB.

You're the kind of cunts that ensured it took 20 years before there was somewhat a consensus about 4:3 stretched pixels on consumer sets, and now you're at it again with this RGB faggotry.

Not him but I disagree with ->

>No, most are using it on whatever CRT they can get their hands on, which most likely are small shitty 4:3 consumer sets with RCA as the highest available input.

I don't know how the situation looks like in the US or elsewhere but in the EU most of the CRT TV's are gone (at least in the western area).

Many people still have their old PC's in the basement or attic. Rn its easy to source a VGA monitors for free instead of a CRT TV at least the last time I have looked.

And because most consoles spit out a 15khz signal no one is really interested in old VGA monitors except people with an upscalers.

But I also agree that composite video isn't that bad and has its own charm or "not such a soulless picture".

>>Only problem is that the graphics of every system before 6th gen are designed to look right using composite video signal and cables, to the extent they base the visuals around it's artifacts to create colors and the illusion of resolution than the system is capable of.
This is true for a few systems, and for only a few games on those systems. Commonly, composite effects were used to maybe improve full screen title sprites, and do faux transparency effects. I find it funny how the big one people tout is Sonic, but by 3 they'd replaced the shield with a clear bubble anyway.

Also, the MiSTer has a composite filter option, rendering any complaint about the connector pointless, because you can emulate composite and it looks better than real composite because it doesn't have the RF noise.

>most are using it on whatever CRT they can get their hands on, which most likely are small shitty 4:3 consumer sets with RCA as the highest available input.
Again, this is only the case in America. And the MiSTer was originally intended as a form of PC preservation, console cores came later and are ultimately secondary.

I'm sorry you were born in a dogshit country. I'm also sorry you're too fucking stupid to learn how to pick up a soldering iron. But neither of these are reasons to put shitty sub-par video connectors on a product, they should be optional garbage for idiots like yourself.

The only system that frequently used composite to its advantage in that way is the Genesis.

Also, if you're in it for the arcade cores, including Neo Geo, you 100% want to be using RGB

I live in Northern-Europe and PC CRT monitors are impossible to find around here, as they got chucked out with the event of LCD monitors becoming a thing WAY BEFORE most people had changed out their living/bed/hobby/cellar-room CRT TVs. CRTs you can still pick up for free just going to electronics scrap drop-off points, it's so common that there where cases of African "entrepreneurs" doing just this and filling up cargo-containers that got shipped to Africa and sold there.

>only a few games relied on composite artifacting
Nope, in fact only a few probably didn't. It's just not the water fall in Sonic, in almost every game you see adjacent checkerboard pixels, those are meant to be blended into a smooth seamless gradient and not be a cheese grater to your eyes. Lot's of this in SNES and arcade games of the period, and the now infamous PS1 dithering? Wasn't an issue back then since we all used the pack-in composite cable.

>MiSTer intended for PC preservation
Nope, but Amiga and Atari ST COMPUTERS yes, however I NEVER EVER saw an Amiga in the 90s with anything other than the RF Modulator box hooked up to a CRT and they where VERY popular here.

>Genesis and some arcade cores have composite filters
Those look nothing like an analog composite video signal, AT ALL. It's strange since Blarg's NTCS filters nailed the look back in the late 90s with ZSNES etc on a fucking Pentium II.

>console cores are secondary
Not for the wast majority of those who now own a MiSTer and will be the ones paying for the analog IO board

>composite video isn't that bad
Indeed, and especially if you don't use absolute shit RCA cables. With decent cables it should be pretty much unnoticeable on a CRT other than the fact that the composite picture would give the illusion of HIGHER resolution and more colors, "just like the developers intended".

The purpose of FPGA preservation is accuracy, playing the NES etc via VGA ain't it.

>> No.7695596

>>7695420
Nope, completely wrong on all counts.
Every 4th gen system and arcade used checkerboard pixel blending . Also not every revision Neo Geo has shit composite, even some RGB revision had worse video than the best composite ones. I have both a decent composite rev AES and a decent RGB rev AES, I always play the composite one since it looks the best.

Okay so I have finally found the time to test it and I can confirm the "Audio pop" while changing cores and I can confirm the clipping over the 3.5 mm audio jack.

I don't had any issues while I had the audio running over HDMI, but I must be honest, that my TV speakers aren't that great.

Can't test toslink jet because I don't have an adapter for the audio jack.

If you want to try it out yourself -> Metal Slug X the second level. Very early in the stage the mummy spit out flying bugs (see pic). While shooting the bugs you can hear the clipping very clearly over the audio jack.

Anyone knows if toslink is affected too?
Probably it's time for a bug report, so the audio levels gets lower to avoid clipping over the audio jack.

By the way in other levels too sometimes enemy sprites starts to flicker and it was also when there were three or more them on the screen, though only on the level 9 I've seen literally part of the sprite disappear, maybe it's because they are bigger ?

I ran the audio from Metal Slug X (full volume in the sound menu) trough Audacity over the 3.5 mm jack.
There is some intense clipping going on and the waveform looks a bit like trash.

Looks like the analog audio out is more like a nice "hack" than a serious audio out solution.

I can only recommend using the digital options (toslink/hdmi) for the best audio experience and ask in the forum if there is a way to lower the core volume or report the clipping to the devs.

But the first step would be to search in the forum if someone else mentioned the problem.

Neat. Thanks.
It's funny, I never got into arcade stuff because MAME is retarded and I never cared enough to learn it's assbackwards ways, but MiSTer being drag-and-drop means I finally get to enjoy all these games in a way that's honestly more faithful to the original experience than the so-called preservation software. I got my CRT, I've got my arcade stick, I've got my MiSTer; I dim the lights, and it's like I'm right there in an arcade circa 20~25 years ago.

yessss, same for me, it's just insane

I was playing stuff on the PCE and Genesis cores last night (waiting on RAM) and it was the second night I had it and I was just stunned, it's brought the joy back into video games for me, no joke, games that I lost interest in are now, it's like playing the Genesis for the first time again, that lack of input delay even without SNAC/Blisster, I should've bought it years ago, fuck the PS4, PS5, even gaming on PC isn't nearly as fun, holy shit, and this is all on a 4k TV with a bit of lag, I haven't tried it on flat screens with less lag or a CRT yet

>> No.7705230

>>7705042
Yeah in the end it's not worth jumping on the beta anyway, better just wait the public which will be the improved and maybe final version of his cores. Plus there are already enough arcade cores to enjoy right now.

And speaking of Jotego this is what is he is trying to improve currently

update from new MiSTer owner

I activated ssh and ftp on my MiSTer and now use Windows 10's built in scp utility to transfer files over ezpz, I'm going to mirror the entire games folder onto this machine, fill it all up with ROMs for every system, and scp the entire directory back, and then keep a batch file in the same folder so I can just run the batch file with a double click and have all ROMs sent over and a filesystem mirror instantly

Yes there are programs that can do all this but I didn't want to install dumb shit for things that built in command line tools can do, knowing how to do all this without ever leaving the command line is a powerful tool

So I was thinking it might be conceivably possible to output composite video directly from the fpga.
If you ran a delta sigma dac at around 800Mhz it might just be sufficient to avoid color banding.
I am not sure if the CycloneV is fast enough to implement an 800mhz delta sigma dac, but I remember running logic at 400Mhz in 2010 on a much older fpga so maybe its doable.

Not tried anything yet, registering an account with intel to download their shitty development tools is too much effort for me right now.

"rainbow-banding" is actually a somewhat desirable trait in composite video artifacting as it was used as a trick to create a bigger color-palette than available (used A LOT on the Genesis and NES, but also on the SNES like famously in Chrono Trigger).

It's of course within reason, and it should not really be all that visible when not intended. A lot of old Genesis now have rainbow banding DEFECTS because of cap value drifting, and when coupled with also old CRT TVs with old caps drifting as well, it is ruining the picture.

It's also notoriously difficult to do analog instability right in FPGAs, they're great at recreating digital logic circuits as it's often straight math of values and timing parameters, but analog is imperfect and constantly in unpredictable motion.

Best option would probably be if you did the DAC at the digital level in the FPGA and handed the analog part over to the ARM side where the filters are handled, as software handles analog emulation aesthetics better than FPGAs as it stands now.

However, the "shaders" that's on the MiSter at current point is quite frankly complete shit, the CRT part is just dimming lines drawn over the image, no shadow/slot-mask approach, and the composite filters are just horrid smear jobs looking like down-samplers and nothing like what composite is supposed to. So that will need actual interest and intentions of getting right to pull that approach off.

Now try any of those with Comix Zone and pay attention to the shadows on the floor. And before you post a picture of the built in "composite blend" filter, is just a basic downsampling filter that doesn't "blend" but "pixel crush" the image that makes it look like an emulator running the wrong resolution on an old LCD.

I'm happy with my MiSTer, but I'm just saying the filters need work and are nowhere near acceptable, either in comparison to real hardware or what other forms of emulation (even from the 90s) are capable of, and we need to stop pretending it is as it is it's weakest point at the moment and do something about it.

This will need a more factual, knowledgeable and mature approach beyond Sorgs "composite looks like crap, here have some lines drawn over the image and pixels crushed together".

Yeah the "composite" filters suck ass. Just use scanlines (soft) instead. Adds enough of a blur to the horizontal axis only to blend in detail without being overly blurry. More importantly It doesn't affect brightness and color at all.

>> No.7708947

>>7707526
I believe the scanlines options are good enough. They're not "Just" lines drawn over the image - they're a bit more complex than that. The MiSTer is not powerful enough for complex CRT shaders. It only has a weak ARM CPU to handle scaling. Even then it's still miles better than what you get with an OSSC.

>> No.7717782

Strictly speaking, the SNES core is kind of bloated because it loads all the expansion chips into the FPGA on boot. It deloads them after selecting a ROM, but this is why whatshisface can't realistically add support to that one Shogi game where for more advanced AI they taped a fucking (higher-clocked) GBA CPU to the board as an add-on chip.

>> No.7717829

>>7717782
One major issue with fpga is the dev tools fucking suck. There is no easy way to swap out parts of the design. So every supported chip has to be present in the design. If you run out of space for chips, you would have to make multiple snes cores with different chips. That is not such a big deal but its inconvenient.

>> No.7717853

>>7717829
That would be a pain in the ass for several reasons.
You'd have "SNES - General" and "SNES - Hayazashi Nidan Morita Shogi 2" cores, and they'd both need to be maintained on github and rolled out and updated by the enduser (as they'd be rolled into the update script).

Far easier to not bother, but it's a result of an FPGA limitation that technically results in bloat- per the original conversation.
