about to play FFVII for the first time. anything I should know? just wondering about stuff that's missable, little tips, and secrets I'd be likely to miss on my first ever playthrough.

>> No.796816

Give a character a weapon with accuracy higher than 100%
Use the item that cures Sadness on them to get Fury
Give them your Counter Materia
Give them your Cover Materia

They'll block hits for others in your party, their gauge will go up faster than normal thanks to Fury, and you'll counter attack.

This an easy way of getting Limit Breaks quickly.

Another is the forest after Nibelheim where a bunch of cap-things appear. Limits are based on use for Level 1 and number of enemies killed for level 2. The caps appear in groups of 7.

Fun fact #1: The Highwind is 777ft long
Fun fact #2: 7 party members in FF7 have 7 limit breaks

>> No.796821

Fun fact: Elemental Materia + [Insert Elemental Materia] + Weapon = Attacks match the element of the materia.

Put it on armor and you halve the damage taken by the element of the materia (or in the case of Poison/Destruct/etc.. you become resistant or immune to the status).

For example: Ribbon, Hades + Elemental Materia on Mystile = Immune to every major status and only 50% of attacks will hit you.

Run around the forests until you find someone

Use enemy skill materia, it's really good

Buy HP+ materia if you don't like being 1-shotted

You'll miss plenty on your first playthrough, but it would ruin the game if we told you everything. Just play it, it's not particularly hard or anything and you can always replay it later.

>> No.796835

Another good one is Long Range materia. Put that on someone and they can steal from enemies outside of their attack range (like stealing from Ultima)

________

When you invade Midgar in Disc 2, go ALL the way up the tunnels to get back to Shinra HQ and return to the lockers and check again. You get Cait Sith's best weapon then.

Miss it then and it's gone.

______

>Yep, if you have multiple of a materia [like Fire] attached to multiple support materia [like the quadruple cast, drain HP/MP, etc], all of the support materia work on the single command so you can have a single command do everything it's linked to.

In the Corel mountains , there's a weapon for Vincent called Snipre CR with 255 accuracy. Seems like overkill, right?

Later on in the game, there's a materia that will allow you to do automatic criticals at the cost of halving your accuracy (I believe it's called deathblow, or D. Blow). Combining the two allows for auto crits every time.

AND if you have other party members mime Vincent's crit, it will land regardless of their own accuracy!

Just a few basics OP, seeing as others have got you covered with other things.

When you start the game, make sure as soon as you get control of that guy in your pic, press triangle to go into the menu.
Go down to the CONFIG option.

Switch ATB to WAIT. This is the most tactical option.
ACTIVE is anarchy with enemies and allies attacking all over the place, and out of turn, RECOMMENDED is a poor middle ground, WAIT is perfect.

Next, move all those sliders to the right. The game has a lot of programming bugs, notably the magic def doing nothing, the same accuracy bug that was in gen 1 Pokemon makes a subtle appearance, and the speed of battles/messages is reversed.
Move those sliders on the CONFIG to the right to get rid of some of the monotony you'll have to endure.

I'm playing FFVII too right now and let me tell you, it's not possible to not miss things. This game has a shitton of hidden stuff and subtle story elements. It's one of the most complicated games after all. If you really want a perfect playthrough, read a guide.

But it's not fun to read a guide in your first playthrough, so, just deal with it. Don't get discouraged just because you missed some interesting stuff like materia or weapons because there are too many things in this game. Just keep playing.

When you get to Mideel on Disc 2, stick to the forest area around it to grind AP and level your materia. By that point in the game you should have weapons & armor that give Double AP growth, and at that point in the game is the best place (before the final dungeon) to power level you materia (and even some levels).

Of course, remember that at this point you may not even need to worry about it, because the game is pretty easily broken with the right skills/materia, but I find leveling here is good to get an early leg up on the WEAPONS optional bosses.

With enough free time and determination you can get a whole set of Master Materia ready to go before you do the Huge Materia side quest.

Other than that, my only tip is to take your time and get lost in the world. FF7 is one of my all time favorite video game settings, and if you're anything like me, you'll find yourself getting easily lost in the atmosphere of the game

>> No.797019

Here OP, I'll tell you some easily missable things
>Zack's story is in the basement of Shinra Mansion at disc 3
don't forget to go back there. Otherwise, get a chocobo breeding guide, that's the only faq you need.

>> No.797080

If you're intending to do a 'perfect item' run - i.e. collect one of every item in the came - then definitely read a guide; there are some items that are permanently missable (not even things like characters' Ultimate Weapons and Limit Breaks, but random things that are possible to steal at lower levels but get permanently swapped out when you get more powerful). If not, enjoy.

Don't ever buy nuts for your Chocobos. The only times you'll need them are when breeding; the only reason to do the Chocobo breeding sidequest is to get a Gold Chocobo (unless you actually like racing the same two courses in Gold Saucer over and over again for no reason); and the only nuts you'll need for getting better Chocobos are both stolen from enemies, not bought.

Don't spend hours of your life looking for all twelve 1/35th Soldiers like I did when I was younger. The others don't exist, despite what the item description says.

This. FF7 is EXTREMELY easy to break, even on your first playthrough, and it's not a difficult game to begin with.

I finished both VIII and IX like ten years ago, probably if I play them now I'll complain about the same things

>> No.797136

Characters fall into traditional class Archetypes, and they have stats to reflect it.
If a character has a lot of Luck, give them Materia to utilise it like Morph. If a character has high Strength don't give them too many magic materia because it'll reduce not only their HP but their STR too, nerfing the damage.

Also, revisit Fort Condor constantly. Every time something new happens in the plot, consider going back because a new mission will usually be available. Well, if you like the Ninja-character anyway. There's a very useful weapon for them that's missable.
Tying into this, at some point you get a Buggy vehicle that can cross rivers. When you approach what looks like a village built into the side of the mountain, in a rocky valley sort of area GET THE FUCK OUT OF THE BUGGY AND PROCEED ON FOOT. If you go too close the buggy breaks which means you miss one of the Fort Condor missions (which unlocks after you enter the village and speak to the first Village NPC).

>> No.797190

Guys, he asked for secrets and missable stuff.

Make sure you have a fight in every patch of forest, there is a recruitable person.
Check all the "notices" messages stuck on walls, this is actually considered a collectable.
Visit all the areas of the north crater maze.
Every time you have control of yourself after cutscenes and you see all members of party scattered around, be careful who you talk to first. Make sure it's the same person.
Always have someone who can hit long range, there are some enemies that cannot be reached by some combinations of party.
Every mini game in the game has an item reward for it for you playing well.

Here's personal tip:
Have Lightning-All equipped on whoever you are building as the mage.
Learn Aqualung, Beta and Bad Breath.

Speaking of Wutai, for the bar sidequest, there's 7 posters for their shop throughout the game. One is in Shin-ra HQ and is permanently missable, I think another might be in Mideel. Get a guide for those specifically, you'll never find them otherwise.
