Turns out that there's been some serious market manipulation in the retro video collecting market for years. Turns out there's a very good reason why prices have spiked lately, and it's not (entirely) due to Covid.

TL;DR Wata Games (founded only a few years ago) got shilled into video game grading "authority" status thanks to connections to the MSM and are using their "authority" status to drive up the prices of retro video games, so that richfags can be even richer.

Although on second thought I guess it is worth talking about since most threads are just about prices alone.

Imagine actively collecting 30 year old mass-produced pieces of plastic. Imagine being such a boomer that you think emulation is worse.

Games collectors are uniquely stupid above any other hobby. They're literally like someone telling you that you can't listen to music on YouTube and the real way to listen to music is to buy the first edition vinyl from decades ago for $60. It's mental illness. Game collectors need help.

There's been suspicions about gaming this market for a while now. It was too strange and many people have proven that it was possible to manipulate. It was luring in faggots from comic and coin collecting and milking them dry.

Anyone who collects slabbed games is a cretin and at best ends up depriving a real enthusiast from enjoying the games as they were meant to. I encourage people to use roms and never support that market. Realistically It's all dust collecting trash anyway if you can't use it.

There's inaccuracy that doesn't matter, and there's a 1 in a 10^n chance that the emulated instruction gets executed earlier than the rest of the system changes state. If you take the number of state changes each second, you realize that if you are unlucky some loop can shift in that manner, and all then the whole game will break.

With emulation that tries to be fast enough, it's hard to guess which inaccuracy is which.

Pi4 with 4GB ram. It's been almost nothing but a headache. Most of the problems with it are gone now that my resolution is set lower, but it is still very prone to freezing and none of the SNES cores have smooth video AND accurate sound. Most of them have accurate sound but they all seem to have a lower framerate. The only one that plays smoothly has inaccurate sound, and it bugs the crap out of me to play with inaccurate sound, especially in 2D Mario games because the SFX in those games are so well known, it's like hearing a favorite song off key.

Yeah, this. It's cheaper, doesn't need to be recapped and stacks of cables and accessories for every system, don't need switch boxes, takes up less room and gives you way more options in one neat package that only grows more useful over time.

The mister lets me have every home computer and console in a space less than a shoebox. Even if you had a Nerd Room like AVGN you'd barely have the sapce to store it and forget having it all laid out and ready to go.

I love vintage hardware like anyone who grew up with it but there's a practical limit to the amount of junk you can keep around as you get older. I don't want to hoard everything like a madman.

If you collected every console made since the NES it would not even fill up one large box.
I really have to wonder where these people come from. Retro collecting is totally trivial if you're not some insane spacecase who collects original boxes for everything + every game ever released for that console in the box + random promo shit and action figures

It's not hoarding at all. You can keep all that shit in one box and then just take one console out and play it and then put it away when you don't want to play any games for it anymore.
Especially when alot of these consoles share cables anyway

That whole 'i dont wanna be a hoarder' argument just seems silly, same as the 'rotting plastic' one for non disc based consoles

>> No.8064706

>>8064479
The only experience I had with this was NES games, and that's due to the way games are inserted into the system, making it really easy to accidentally put lateral leverage on the connector pins, damaging them over time (especially if you're a little kid who doesn't know this).

No other cartridge console does this, and for discs it's really easy to handle them with care. Now, there are some components in consoles and games which can wear with time and use, the previously mentioned NES connector pins are one, but you also have capacitors and save batteries. Generally though, 4th gen and earlier machines and games are often pretty simple to fix if something is wrong, either you can do it yourself if you have the tools and knowhow, or you can get someone else to do it for cheap.
5th gen can be trickier, what with CD drives and the N64's less than rugged analog stick, but there's ways to deal with that stuff too.

Retro hardware can be maintained without putting in really hard effort. Usually it works fine, but if it isn't, you can almost always fix it.

Those figments of your imagination can buy the 2 or 3 consoles they want. Then they can buy all the games, but let me guess, they only want 2 or 3 games. Then they can buy new pads and cables, but let me guess, they are happy using the 30 year old junk that came with the consoles. Then they can have them recapped, or let me guess, they can just ignore their 30 year old electronics falling apart. Then they can find a CRT or have the consoles modded, but let me guess, they already have one conveniently stored in the attic. Then they can blah blah blah. Meanwhile, I just hop on the internet and have everything I need in 5 minutes flat and it's all brand new.

Really reads like somebody spoiled by having everything they want at their fingertips at any time they want. Yeah, sure, emulation is convenient, I emulate systems I don't own on the wii and for my Saturn I use ODE. But fuck it, acting as if it's IMPLAUSIBLE that somebody doesn't want to own every single console or every single game, just wants a tasteful shelf of 20 games they like and one dedicated console plugged in, fuck off dude. The most common reason people are into retro gaming is to relive old memories of playing great games, it's not to have every single game ever made before 2007 in your bedroom. It's great that people can emulate if they want to, that doesn't mean they want to emulate fucking everything and it doesn't mean they absolutely need to go out and buy a $300 dedicated device for it when they might already own the Nintendo or sega consoles that the machine emulates to begin with.

I got one of those for around $39 and I love the little thing. I also got a pair of SNES Controllers to play the SNES games I injected onto it.

Simply basic supply and demand when fags keep spamming these as the best games ever

Pis were popular before those SNES things even came about and are way better in hardware and software when you configure them. It's a great and well supported scene that's easy to get into.

An old laptop is still a top option for retro emulation though and I've said this to many people who overcomplicate stuff. Yesterday's laptop can beast through and hold roms for so many games you'd die of old age first.

Boomer's faces when they bought an NES with Mario and Zelda for $500 and later learns that every device in the world can play them for free.

Theyre games that everyone with an SNES should have. There are more SNES owners than copies of those games.

I always wonder what type of NES-era boomer completely missed out on emulation. I'd imagine they were an uber-normie from a poorfag family that couldn't afford a computer and they didn't get on the internet until the iPhone was popular.

I hate game collecting. It is the most soulless hobby. You will be much happier playing newer games and being patient for the good ones. Playing new games is cheaper than retro garbage now.

I’m going to make my own eBay grading system and list all my genesis carts an d ps2 games well over 1000 dollars. All I have to do is get plastic baggies and print a designed logo label, then staple it. Rich Zoomers will buy it.

I absolutely hate the entire game collecting market and every scum collector and buy both. I used to hate getting outbid by 5 dollars on shit games, but now I’m pissed that CRAPPY GAMES are 5x what it was a couple years back. I just don’t like it anymore and I will do anything to ruin this “hobby.”

I also think Limited Run is a greedy bootleg operator.

It's a bigger scam than I thought but it always seemed like an obvious scam.

"Pay us and we'll tell you how much your thing is ACTUALLY worth" is a sucker's bet if I've ever heard of one.

I'm just glad that they're focusing on big name common games and are generally leaving the rare obscurities to the way side - those are more interesting to collect and play.

Lads, is there anything we can do to expose and/or reverse this in any way? If /vr/ ever had a cause, it would be this. Even if our efforts would be marginal-to-non-existent, and the goal next to impossible, is there ANYthing we can do other than whinge? There's got to some sort of countermeasure to this.
