Which version, SNES, SMD, or Mega CD? Shadowrun (SNES) was made by Beam Software, the Nightshade (NES) team, but they probably ran into creative issues trying to follow the SNES game, and the Shadowrun license isn't cheap.

System Shock 1, moreso than 2. I like the 2nd game a lot, but I have to admit they really should have kept the hacking from the first game. Hacking in the first game involves entering a 3D cyberspace world where you can move in all 6 directions freely and fight ICE. Hacking in the second game involves playing a minigame where you click on boxes on a small grid and they connect based on RNG influenced by your current skill levels. Technically the 2nd game is still cyberpunk in setting, plot, and theme.

BHunter is a Win98 game about Fifth Element-style flying cars. You play as a Bounty Hunter and chase down and shoot criminals. It came out two years after the Fifth Element, and the influence is very obvious. So if you ever wanted a videogame of the flying cars from that movie, this is is. Pic related.

Flashback is a solid cinematic platformer game with shooting dodging mechanics.

Ghost in the Shell on PS1 is a great 3D action platformer/run-n-gun game where you can climb on the walls and ceiling, or skate around on them at full speed.

part 1

(I'm on an alcohol & drug fueled binge, so forgive me for misspellings and such; otherwise, I'm really a great guy)

Sega Genesis version is the best and that's a fucking fact!

- It’s just so open in the gameplay and especially for a 90s cartridge game

- The Matrix missions & hacking are especially good; the graphics and gameplay are amazing here; you control it via first person and it’s like Johnny Mnemonic (that red-haired chick in the movie was hot too)

- You also stay at a hotel to improve stats if you have the points and can get into a fight and get thrown outside (sounds way cooler than it should be but excellent detail for a 90s cartridge game); I wouldn’t actually drink that ONIONS-Koffee shit in real life but you do in-game

- Hilarious real time fights both on the street and in the Matrix; ghouls just rush you in abandoned buildings and you gotta run and shoot with the lousy starter pistol; it’s gets better when you get better and can one shot kill or fire a steady SMG burst either suppressed or not; the Matrix offers you looking at the nodes and killer ICE in first person while slipping past them/permutating a passcode/fukn them up with your own deck

- Travel to other locations via orc driven taxi cab (it ain’t free unless you ally with them or something and I forget if that’s if you choose to join the Yakuza or their rival, the Mob)

- Cops (a.k.a. Lonestar) harass you just like real life and you CAN go shoot up their building in revenge; I had a friend do this and absolutely NO Lonestar harassed him for a period of over two hours of him playing after that (he was really proud of it)

- Buy guns, ammo, armor (like bullet-proof vests), grenades when you want; you got the cash and it’s yours although you gotta get the cash first (see JOBS)

- Get missions/JOBS from the various Mr. Johnson(s) found in the bars(?) of different locations while negotiating pay; you can also turn down jobs or just cancel them if they piss you off in-game

8668637

>>8668630

part 2

- Speaking of JOBS, you have Matrix runs (you can also just go hack random networks and sell data to the shady elf guy in the green suit), escort some dude from one place to another ‘cuz it’s dangerous just like real life, kill ghouls in an abandoned building for money, deliver packages of “stuff” as a courier (dragon dildos, drugs, I dunno…you’re like an angry armed AMAZON affiliated independent delivery person), rescue corpo(?) people from corporation buildings, etc.

>pic related; the MATRIX in it's glory

I find that more impressive in the MCD game where the runs are fairly complicated and not just auto generated.

>> No.8668640

part 3 (Sega Genesis)

- It does have a storyline and other story related missions that you can do too but all the other crazy stuff in the game makes it very distracting and that’s the biggest difference in the Genesis vs SNES vs newer PC games; the story is the gameplay in the others (and dictates what you can do and where you can do it) while you can do-whatever-the-fuck you want in the Genesis within gameplay limitations

Help my out with "MCD", my brain is frazzled.

regardless, part 4 (SNES)

Now, the SNES game is different and is its’ own thing but still very neat. I have an old magazine review where they said maybe it was designed originally for the PC/mouse because the controls can be awkward with the controller. The story is very engaging with you playing as a guy trying to figure out what happened to him when he wakes up on a morgue slab. I really haven’t played it beyond that though yet.

part 5 (newer PC Shadowrun games)

Here's where things get tricky. I really, really wanted to like the new PC games like Shadowrun Hong Kong but here’s what’s dumb about it:

- the lame “Tony Tough-nuts” cop character and sometimes lousy story (you know fukn Shadowrun novels and gangster movies from Hong Kong exist that you can *cough* rip off, right? I’m stuck in Hong Kong with this asshole cop? Oh, and he's my "friend"? I hate cops! Fuck this one in particular! And some guys are trying to kill us? Idiot writers of this need to do better. It makes your dick soft and I like hentai.

- bad Matrix/hacking (when compared to the Sega Genesis); it’s just a shitty translation of the sourcebook rules with mediocre graphics

- the fact you can’t go back to an area you just finished when you finally get enough money to buy that grenade launcher you previously couldn’t afford; really? FU!

- and no randomly generated missions to get cash 'n experience

- you’re stuck in whatever area you’re in as opposed to the Genesis game that lets me take a cab wherever else I wanna go and to buy stuff, talk with some assholes getting info, do JOBS for money and loot, etc.

- the graphics are of course better in many respects aside from the uninspired Matrix (seriously, fuck these clowns for this travesty)

- it feels like a straight port of the sourcebook (or just some shitty one) to the PC with story and gameplay limitations; the fighting/hacking in the Genesis game is more fun and not turn based like the PC games but that’s a preference you gotta judge

It’s all so tiring that I can’t complete it.

I think that's the easiest way to make money once you have the gear and skill especially once you have Ito's passcode to his private network. You move maybe two nodes and there's a couple datastores in his system. You can camp outside Boris-2's door with the computer right there and easily make over 10,000 a shot if you grab the right sized files. And you can just keep doing it, they never run out of data when you jack out and jack back in.

Bloodnet is the encapsulation of 90s cyberpunk for me. My mate had it on Amiga and it came on something like 12 floppies.

Good game, but the scenarios in the pre-game multiple choice questions that helped build your character were actually far more interesting than the scenarios in the game itself which was a bit of a shame. The cyberspace depiction was quite surreal and interesting though.

>The game being coded in such a way that makes it difficult to hack.

Take your pick. There's no shortage of people out there wanting to see the game expounded/improved on, the game is so short and once you know where to go and what to do, the challenge is lost. Never mind that you simply have to grind a bit to turn your MC into a god. Having to come up with arbitrary limitations to make each playthrough interesting is a must.

As it is, there's only some minor hacks that fix bugs and inconsistencies w/ equipment used by the hired guns, all authored by one guy scattered across several different GameFAQs posts. I collected and archived everything posted so they wouldn't be lost to the ether. If you're interested, here's a link to the archive:

The SNES mouse only had two buttons. You'd either need another input device like a keyboard (did the SNES ever have any?) or change up how the menu system works. Maybe just have icons along the edges of the screen that you can click on to perform specific functions.

Different developers and different takes on the license. The SNES game tells you a linear story in the Shadowrun setting with Jake Armitage. Mega Drive game is more of a sand box game and you can pick different classes and tackle many missions / runs to get to the end of the game. They are both worth trying out. The Mega CD game is more like you are reading a visual novel which takes story breaks to give you SRPG battles, think like Utawarerumono / Underwater Ray Romano. I hope it gets translated one day.

Mainly the high tech setting with a huge undercurrent of gritty lowlifes that society is more or less built upon. The idea that life is oppressive for everyone in a different way, with its overly sterile design for citizens and civilians who function more as cogs in a machine rather than people and treating those who won't comply with such a lifestyle as outright trash to be discarded. Plots and intrigue to go along with it, for all but the very tip top of movers and shakers, you should never be able to really shake the feeling that you're getting used or don't have a clear grasp of the big picture because even discovering a facet of what's going on still won't help you piece together that the warehouse you raided tonight and the small box you stole under the cover of setting the place on fire was actually blank keycards that a megacorp was going to need as a step towards infiltrating their rival's new biolab so they could unleash a plague from there and blame it on them, all the while killing several million people in the process. But congrats, you got a couple thousand bucks for the job.

Basically it's all a sort of pervasive dread with the occasional high note where things do go right and you claw yourself up just a step or two at a time. A shitty world and struggle and while you haven't really solved all the world's problems, you do sometimes throw a wrench in the plans of those who seek to profit in your misery.
