PoP has no momentum mechanics it's just animations with predetermined states. You can run all you want but the distance doesn't change based on your speed. Just the animation state counts. You're an idiot. Tomb Raider relies on animation states as well. It's what gives it the realistic movement, since her character is not animated dynamically through physics. How you use those animation states to traverse the environment is what results in the perceived momentum, along with the realistic animated movement that was rotoscoped from an actual human being.

No. Consider how Mario can slide around no matter his animation state he can run backwards and still slide forward. You could never do that in PoP simply because there is no momentum in the game it's all canned states that never inherit any properties of previous ones.

I'd say the momentum mechanics are implemented through the animations with predetermined states. If you run you can jump further compared to if you jump forward from standing. If you run and turn around the prince slides on the floor before he can change direction while if you stand still and turn it's instant.

I agree it's very simplistic though. Mario has a lot MORE and more advanced momentum and inertia mechanics than PoP. Just less realistic for controlling a human.

You have no idea what you're talking about. What you're implying is that the entire gameworld is animated around the controls, which is wrong. The character moves based on your inputs and the animations that play are in accordance with your inputs, IDENTICALLY to Mario, the fact of the matter is, more care and time was put into realistically animating and pacing the inputs than Mario ever was, because Mario was not trying to be realistic.
